Your favorite albums of 2018?
« on: January 02, 2019, 08:12:51 am »
Welp, it's 2019 now, so that means it's time to roll out the "best of" lists for 2018. Since I don't really give a sh!t about film and don't really keep up with any recent literature, I'll stick with music. I'm curious what everyone here has been jamming to this past year.

Here's my top 10:

10) チャットモンチー - 誕生. (Chatmonchy - Tanjou). (Quirky Japanese indie stuff.)

(They haven't put anything from this album on YouTube, so you'll have to live without. Sucks to be you!)

9) Dimmu Borgir - Eonian. (Norwegian symphonic black metal.)

8 ) Megaherz - Komet.  (Neue deutsche härte.)

7) 嘘とカメレオン - ヲトシアナ. (Uso To Chameleon - Wotoshiana) (Japanese math rock)

6) Marduk - Viktoria. (Swedish black metal)

5) Angra - ØMNI. (Brazilian Progressive/Power metal)

4) Band Maid - World Domination. (Japanese hard rock)

3) Pig Destroyer - Head Cage. (US Grindcore)

2) Sleep - The Sciences. (US stoner doom)

1) ネクライトーキー - ONE!. (Necry Talkie - ONE!). (Quirky Japanese indie rock)

So what about you all? Lay it on me!

I'm too lazy to make a real top 10 list but some of my favorites were:

1) Virtue - The Voidz
2) Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino - The Arctic Monkeys
3) Little Dark Age - MGMT
4) Mirror Might Steal Your Charm - The Garden
5) 24 (EP) - Hyukoh
6) ye - Kanye West

Those are all the albums that I repeatedly listened to from beginning to end.

Mister Tim already has Sleep (long live the kings!) so I won't include it in my list but these are five albums from 2018 that I listened to a lot.

1)  Ghost - Prequelle.  (Very catchy metal)

2) Carpenter Brut - Leather Teeth.  (Synthwave, very sexy)

3) High on Fire - Electric Messiah. (Metal and because Mister Tim already has Sleep I'm having the singer's other band lol)

4)  Judas Priest - Firepower (Metal, strong comeback album)

5)  Jake Shears - Jake Shears (Pop)

I doubt I've actually listened to 10 full albums made in 2018. Those that I have listened to:

1. Yob - Our Raw Heart
2. Jon Hopkins - Singularity
3. Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch
4. The Midnight - Kids

I listened to few others but wouldn't put them any list.
The 1975 - Brief Inquiry (really, really overrated)
Ghost - Prequelle ( also really, really overrated, but I guess I can see the appeal for some people)
Kpip! - Martin 2018

I completely forgot about the new Ghost, and I consider myself a big fan. I guess that speaks to how much I ended up listening to it.

Ooh Yob!  I nearly put that on my list because I did love it a lot but I guess I didn't listen to it as much as the other stuff.  Yeah Our Raw Heart was a really good one.  Agree on The 1975 too.  Gave it a try but don't get the hype at all.

To add, even though I like it a lot, I also think Prequelle is overrated considering Ghost's previous albums.  It's solid but it can't hold a candle to Meliora can it?

If we're throwing in other stuff that was decent but not quite good enough to make a "Best of" list, I'd add...

Arkona - Храм (Khram). Russian folk/pagan metal. Strong first half, but really falls flat the last few tracks.

Primordial - Exile Amongst the Ruins. Irish folk/black metal. A decent album, but in the end nothing to write home about.

Cruachan - Nine Years of Blood. Irish folk metal. Not bad, but not as good as I hoped it would be. One or two really fun tracks, and the rest is pretty meh.

Korpiklaani - Kulkija. Finnish folk metal. A fun album, and was probably closer than most of this other stuff to making my list, but in the end didn't quite make the cut.

Shishamo - Five. Cutesy Japanese pop-rock. A genuinely good album, and probably the hardest to cut from my top 10. I almost made it a top 11, just to include it. In the end, I decided that though it was good, it wasn't really a step up from their last couple albums. They're mostly spinning their wheels, and could probably benefit from stepping back for a year or two to digest their progress, instead of releasing a new album every damned year.

I also checked out the new High on Fire, but it honestly didn't do anything for me. I think HoF has gotten progressively "worse" with each new album they've put out. Their debut was a friggin' masterpiece, but Pike's just gotten weedlier and deedlier with each release since then. He needs to put on the brakes a bit and concentrate on just writing solid riffs, rather than trying to impress people with his noodly chops. The new Sleep is proof that he can still put out incredible music, but perhaps only when he's not the one making all the decisions.

I first heard Ghost because a lot of people whose opinions I respect were raving about them in 2013ish. I listened to the first 2 albums and thought this is OK. But the guy's voice rubbed me the wrong way. It's like it doesn't match the music. It's too thin or something. When Meliora came out it got pretty stellar reviews across the board. I listened to it, but I had the same reaction. "This is Ok, but am I missing something that everyone else is hearing?" I still think it's Tobias Forge's vocals. My brother can't listen to Guns n roses because he can't stomach Axl's voice.

I can see why people like them. I like the campy, tongue in cheek, horror thing. And "Majesty"  is a great song. But basically I never got over the hump with that band.

At least that's the approach you're taking, rather than the tired "Hur dur, it's just Scooby Doo chase music" card the haters have been playing since 2010.

My top three:

Idles – Joy as an Act of Resistance
Sophie - Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides
Beach House – 7

Also enjoyed Robyn, Mitski and Lost Under Heaven LPs. The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys most overrated.

Well, back in the saddle again after more than a week sans computer; just got my new one up and running last night.

Belated Yuletide/Hogmany greetings and wishes to all and sundry...!

Music has long been one of my overriding passions so it's good to see a 'best of' post to start the New Year...Here are some of my contributions - music that turned my crank over the last year (just a brief list: there were tons more albums but brevity must prevail in such a post).

Before getting underway, I will concur with Taeyang's Arctic Monkeys choice - that album did get a considerable outing on my stereo, too.

So forth into the breach, and in no set order, although I will highlight (Bold) the albums I really set as as a cut above...also give a brief note as to what style/genre the selection is:

1. THE VRYLL SOCIETY: Course of The Satellite    [ Brand new Indie Debut from a Liverpool quintet....one o
my top picks of the Year]

2. [DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB: Fragile Creatures Part 1        [ Ditto; From Newcastle -Brand new reworking of
Northern Soul meets Detroit 1970s Power Rock]

3. HEILUNG: Lifa                                                                [ Riveting Proto-Germanic 'Shamanist' 'Folk Rock]

4. NOYA RAO: Icaros                                                         [  New,  Spacey Electro 'Lush-indie' from Leeds]

5.EZRA COLLECTIVE: Space is the place/Juan Pablo The Philosopher  [ Epitome of the burgeoning new
spirit and imagination re-inventing Jazz  out of the UK]

6. NAT BIRCHALL: Indivisible:                            [ Great return to form for one of the UK's premier Jazz Sax men]

7. MOTH EFFECT: Crocodilians                           [ Creative new Electronica weirdness from the Sussex-based
                                                                            composer/musician/producer]

8: MOSS: East Coast Chip Shop                       [As above, but a more melodic rock foundation to the Electronica]

9. CHIP WICKHAM: Shamal Wind                      [ Tasty Keyboards excursions touching on Soul/Funk/Jazz styles]

10: KIKAGAKU MOYO: Masana Temples          [Outstanding new Space/Psychedelic power rock from a truly
                                                                               adventurous and accomplished Japanese tour-de-force]

Well, that's 10... There are many more, but I won't belabour the issue. Instead, here are some Honourable Mentions:

   BATAGRAF:   Delights of Decay

   SKIDS:        Burning Cities

   SALIF KEITA:      Un Autre Blanc

NIK TURNER:      Pharoahs From Outer Space

   ROOSEVELT COLLIER:              Exit 16

   FRANS PETTER ELDH:         Enemy

   WEB WEB:                   Oracle

   NATIRUTS:                 Xaxado De Amor

LEAST FAV: Imagine Dragons 2018 Origins album. It's awful, the only bearable songs in the wasted hour of my life was Zero (only because of the movie video), Natural and the one song I'd listen to again: Bullet in a Gun (that tune actually gets better and better instead of dying in the middle). The rest of the album is garbage.

I liked their hits from before this most recent album (Origins was released just two months ago). But this new album makes them seem less like Coldplay or U2 and more like, well, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nickelback: hits and yet a ton of cringe worthy stuff. Ugh.

Night Visions (2012) is awesome. Evolve (2017) is very good. Origins (2018) is awful, their worst by far, and hopefully mostly forgotten before long, if even listened to at all.
