Less People on Food Stamps
« on: November 12, 2018, 12:49:06 pm »
Less people in America are relying on food stamps.

That's wonderful news. I'm very happy.

Trump is awful. Because of his actions, the people who print food stamps will lose their jobs and have to go on food stamps.

Obama made it easier to get food stamps. Trump made it harder. Reduced access means reduced numbers.

2 things to take away after reading this article:

#1: "38,845,997 Americans took part in ... food stamps, in August 2018." ... ... holy $#!t, more than 10% of all Americans are on foodstamps???  Considering that the average monthly value of a foodstamp is $254, that's a looooot of welfare the government is handing out. I can see why they're trying to reduce this number.

#2: "state legislatures passed bills requiring food stamp recipients to work, participate in job training, or volunteer 20 hours per week to receive benefits."  ...So basically, less people are on food stamps because they changed things so that less people qualify for food stamps? Alright then.

Of course, as the article states, the slight improvements in the general economy may also have been helpful. Unfortunately, the article doesn't qualify this in any way, so it's hard to judge the extent of this effect.

America is generous with welfare. Most poor people (or people in general) aren't going to turn down free money.

Fewer may qualify because big employers like Walmart have raised wages.

There will be more food stamps if the economy fails again just like 2008 and 1929.

This has a lot to do with teaching English in South Korea.

Could be an option for when the food stamps run out or the rich find a new way to soak the rest of us here in the U.S.
