I'm going to nerd-out a little and mention that digital media is a bizarre quirk in our modern capitalist societies because it's one of a few realms, perhaps the only one, that could plausibly be described as post-scarcity. The copying and distribution of electronic information can be achieved at expenses so small as to be virtually non-existent. Of course globally the necessary infrastructure is not evenly distributed but in the developed world it's omnipresent. There's a lot of interesting implications for the entertainment industry and Hollywood in particular. Distribution is a vanishing market which is a big deal because it used to be a huge source of income for the studios.

And to go full lefty-liberal-socialist for a moment I'll add that it'd be possible to enter a potentially post-scarcity society and not even realize it because the owners of the previously necessary means of production have a vested interest in maintaining their established positions of power. I'm speculating wildly now but the era of 3D printing is going to change stuff up in a huge way. Already the swing of financial power is moving from production to licensing.

And one more note; generally the people creating the CGI for multi-million dollar budget movies are overworked and underpaid because the work is farmed out to whoever will do the work quickest and cheapest. That's why we've seen some truly awful CGI work despite the technology and abilities of modern CGI farms. They screw them over so they can help Clooney or Bullock or whoever pay for their 3rd yacht.

You wouldn't steal a car.

But I'd download one if I could.

You wouldn't download a bear...

Would you?

Well as someone who used to download movies.....don't.....It just bricks your computer.

I now go the Netflix, VOD through my cable providers route than download from file sharing sites.   Once I deleted all that malaware off my computer I found my computer to perform better.  Just saying.

I know this thread started as more of a sarcastic rant/joke more than anything but...

For what it's worth, if you're getting malware from downloaded movies or TV shows, then you are certainly doing it wrong. Not all pirating sites are equal, not all torrent clients are equal, etc. I'm not advocating that you do it, as there is some risk involved (especially if you are unfamiliar with the process and sources), but if you do decide to pirate movies, shows, or music (although music tends to be the least risky) make sure at least do some research beforehand.

The most basic piece of advice I could give someone would be: private trackers >>> public trackers in the vast majority of cases, but going the private route isn't for everyone.

Be careful folks.

I'm forced to download more intrusive software from Korean banking websites than I need to for downloading torrents.

I'd download a teddy bear. :P

I have a friend that downloads via private trackers. So, anything I'm interested in downloading, I ask him, and he'll find me a safe link to what I'm after.

yeah, private trackers really are the best way. if you can get an invite to one, after you become a power user on it (upload your own torrents and upload a certain amount of data), you'll get access to the invite forums and be able to get invites to every private tracker around. highest quality torrents, fast speeds, well organised, very little risk of being caught. the communities are also great as the users are very passionate about whatever the site's purpose is (music, movies, games, etc)

If you go this route and download from any tracker (ditto on private trackers, I've belonged to one for years now, keep a ratio of around 4-1 and get great access) make sure you have a great malware detector and use a vpn so your ip address is hidden.

I've heard stories about people in the states getting nasty letters from their ISP when they get caught

Private trackers kinda negate the reasoning behind both a VPN and a malware detector. It's private in order to keep the level of content high. In other words, bogus torrents are reported and nuked. Users that uploaded files are banned. And since it's private, no random ISP shill can hop on and start logging IP addresses. In addition, a great number of private trackers explicitly forbid using a VPN while browsing the website.

If your using trackers that claim to be 'private', but you've heard of users getting DMCA notices--chances are it's not really private.

^ yep. I can't think of any of the 'best' private trackers that allow vpns, actually. And you definitely wouldn't need a malware detector. I mean, torrents get instantly reported if they have wrong filenames, tags, bitrate, etc, or for pretty much any other imperfection. That's why private trackers are so good.

I mean, the biggest private trackers probably have the most comprehensive, detailed and accessible libraries ever to exist anywhere, ever

Yeah, my friend is power user for a few of those forums, another friend also has access to at least one, and he owns a server. So he downloads everything to his private server, and me and our other friends can watch things directly from it. :D
The friend that has access to multiple forums, he also downloads lots for our friends server.

So basically, I rarely need to download anymore. If there is something I need to download, I just ask one of them, and I get private DL links for it.
Which these days, is just Kor subbed stuff for the students for camp / after exam movie time. :P
