It sounds like the Chinese guys who he got into fight with were willing to drop the charges for $100,000 US. He didn't have the money. No one was seriously injured. He had been coaching football and teaching English in China.

Pretty much why I'll never go to China, will never work in China and will never acknowledge the place as anything but a corrupt and lawless dump controlled by a regime more evil than the Nazi Party.

I guess Korea's legal system is not so bad compared to that.  This must be new though.  Use to hear foreigners got an easy ride in China and that the legal system didn't really apply to them to the same extent.
I can see.  I can see.  I can see....

I they never got a pass on violent crime. The petty bullshit laws are used to deport undesirables, with the fiction "you  are getting of easy... This would be 5 years in prison for a local."

Doesn't sound too much different than in Korea. He didn't have enough money to settle (in Korea, it's called blood money), so he took his chances in a court system that has a 99% conviction rate.

However, the sentences doled out in Korea pale significantly in comparison with China. The sentences here are fairly light for a lot of crimes, and as a foreigner, you can go to the foreigner only prison in Cheonan.

Prisons in China must be

That's a little much don't you think.  Honestly it's not that bad of a country.  I wouldn't want to teach there because their children seem a level more spoiled than Korean kids.  However I'm shocked that the "victim" asked for such a high dollar amount.  Usually here in Korea they ask for 10mill won or less (10,000USD) that way they can try and get some money out of you.  Depends on the situation.  If you drunkingly bashed some guy's face in and knocked out all his teeth and he required massive facial surgery then yeah I don't see them settling on any small dollar amount.

It sounds like there is no video footage of Wendell attacking anyone. There was video of a bottle being thrown at him, and him confronting the men.

"The events of the next few moments are unclear: The defense told Sixth Tone that a balloon floating against the ceiling obscured the corner of the shot that would have shown Yu’s face, but that he didn’t react as if physically struck."

So, it sounds like there is no footage of him attacking anyone, but they claim it happened when the camera's view was blocked by a balloon?

https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1001346/locked-in-limbo-the-curious-case-of-wendell-brown

Yu did lose vision in his eye and had it removed, but I can't find any articles that specifically talk about what the proof is that his loss of vision was actually from the fight?

Wendell has already spent two years in prison. What a horrible situation.

Because I understand China's history, I'll avoid it like the plague. During the cultural revolution every Chinese student was given directive to beat up their teachers and anyone they didn't like, raze countless buildings to the ground, and basically indoctrinated with the idea that they could do WHATEVER they want as long as they answered to the CCP.
After this monumental F*up, where nearly 300mil people starved, those who survived only did so by stealing, cheating, lying, bribing and snitching. This lot are called the 'Lost Generation', basically every person in China over 60.

Every Chinese politician who is and was in office, maintained or got to their position by doing the above. Not a single Chinese politician has anything but their, and the CCP's interests in mind.

An old woman actually tried to sue the parents of a bunch of children who helped her to her feet when she "fell over", she won! Sure, many young people are against this mentality, but the fact remains, those in power and a whole bunch of the rest of the population have nothing resembling a moral code, and if you think the way the treat animals here is bad, wait till you go there.

Essentially, going to China is like going to a Casino. You get a sweet deal and get lucky for a while, but eventually, the house always wins. Any kind of legal issue that goes to court, you literally have 0% chance of getting a ruling in your favour. China is what it is, and I'm not going near that dump.

How about the South African sentenced to death in Vietnam, for bringing in 1.3kg of blow.

Now that shit is tragic

I wonder how prevalent such things actually are in China. I mean, one could say something similar the time some burglar drowned in someone's pool and their family sued the homeowners and similar cases that have popped up over the years. However, these cases tend to be the extreme, rather than the norm.

We should always take cases involving some extreme legal incident in a foreign country that gets picked up by the news wires with a grain of salt. If you believed that, you'd think people in South Asia were doing honor killings all the live long day.

Don't do the crime if you aren't prepared to do the time.

Yeah, "It's not fair" isn't really applicable when you're OBVIOUSLY breaking a HUGE law in another country.

Enough "whataboutism", please. The fact, yes it is a fact, remains that if you're involved in any legal dispute in China, and the other party is a Chinese citizen, you're going to lose, guaranteed.
