I Hate Korea More and More Everyday
« on: June 08, 2018, 04:09:49 pm »
I'm from Canada and Korea is REALLY sucking these days. Canada is legalizing
pot! WTF, that's great.  What am I doing here?  I love camping.  WTF. What am
I doing here?  Camping sucks in Korea. I wanted a house! WTF. I should of been
on the property ladder a long time ago. What am I doing here?  I love target
shooting! WTF! What am I doing here?

Biggest mistake of my life was leaving a western country and coming here.

I don't really get why North Americans come here, even for a year. You're wasting your time. Getting your foot into the door with any job in Canada is better for your resume than  a year at mom'n'pops hogwon.
Catch my drift?

I don't get why people go to a different country and then complain that it's not the same as back home.

What's the point in going somewhere else?

Possible reasons
-opportunity to travel
-chill job
-anonymity is society
-drink in public
-healthcare reasons for Americans

The won travels better to North America than to the more expensive English-speaking countries.
Ko fills half his luggage with instant noodles for his international business travels, a lesson he learned after assuming on his first trip that three packages would suffice for six days. “Man, was I wrong. Since then, I always make sure I pack enough.”

The point is you don't know how bad it is going to suck or how much damage it will inflict
on your future happiness.

Possible reasons
-opportunity to travel

If travel is your main priority then go somewhere culturally and visually interesting. Thailand, nepal, South America

Quote
-chill job

Working at hogwons or in Korean ESL generally is never "chill". Its a stressful position

Quote
-anonymity is society

Anonymity is good but is it really a reason to ruin your life and future career prospects?

Quote
-drink in public

if that is your main reason to turn down life and a future in the worlds highest-standard of living countries, then you need help

Quote
-healthcare reasons for Americans

Its hard to actually get time off in Korea to get healthcare at all. Work is 24/7 with no-one to cover

Canada and the US have a high standard of living and career opportunities: they are first world countries. Why would you leave them and come to Korea? You're wasting your lives here. Every year you hang on at banana hogwon ruins your career options back home. Do you know how many koreans want to leave here and live in North America? most of them.

The only waegs who are here legitimately are people from poorer countries with few employment options and potentially bleak futures. e.g. South Africans. Filippinos. Scots.

I have been here a while.  Own a business.  Have a family.  What would I do back home?
Go begging for a job somewhere?

Also, I was towed around by my parents when I was young.  It was terrible.  Never
keeping friends. Then trying too hard to make friends in a new place.  I don't want
to put my kids through that.

Oh... so pretty tied down. I don't want this to sound too mean, but how did it take you so long to figure out that you liked camping, shooting and smoking weed?

I think the new Canadian marijuana law just exacerbated my feelings
of homesickness.  I'll get over it.  I just miss the social experiences,
the natural wonders, the freedoms that people take for granted in
North America.

I can picture myself on a lake somewhere, smoking a fatty with
a cooler of craft beer, fishing.  Then BBQing with friends at a
cottage.  (Haha, not in KOREA!)

My opinion, go home! It would be best for you and everyone here.

If pot is a strong enough reason for you to go home, then you're still a frat boy.
Camping is great in Korea, tip, don't go to popular camping spots.
You want a house? If working in Canada and being able to save more money to buy a house than
living in Korea rent free is possible... why did you come here?

Korea has a lot of sh*t that makes me want to pull my hair out on a daily basis, but really, most of what makes Korea sh*ty comes down to how you deal with it.

Right, OK.  I'll just print two million Canadian dollars to buy a house, because that is the
average house price where I come from.  Then I'll invent some things I can put in a resume
to get a job.

BTW, I guess the majority of Canadians are frat boys then?

1) Travel using Korea as a base allows one to save more money to take home. Other countries have more interesting things domestically (Japan, Thailand, China, and others).
2)Never worked at a terrible hagwan.
3) Not sure one leads to another.
4) Hopefully you can help me?
5) 24h work was not my experience. I worked ~7 hours/day, 5 days/week. I kept my work and non-work life separated.

I can't speak to other Canadians and Americans, nor can I speak to people from other countries and their personal reasons to come to Korea. I may hazard guesses, but I can only be certain of the choices I make.

Waygook is a great outlet to vent and I hope that it helps you blow off some steam. I know it helped me.

I'm just going by what you said " I wanted a house! WTF. I should of been
on the property ladder a long time ago. What am I doing here?"

If you're complaining that you should've been on the property ladder a long time ago then you're suggesting you had the means to do so before you came to Korea and implying that working in Korea is less financially fruitful... Why else would you bring it up?

If people want to smoke weed and it's legal, that's their business. The issue is you're letting something so ridiculous and silly hold sway over your entire life. That's like someone deciding to quit their job and emigrate to China because you can let your kid pee in public.

Anyways, do what you think is best.

If you don't like it in Korea, I recommend for you to leave.

I lived and worked in Korea for 7 years, and I can assure you that
there are things I have seen in Korea that I don't like, but there are
a lot of things that I have appreciated in Korea that I cannot get
satisfaction for here in Canada. And there are nifty things I have
seen in Korea that you will never see in Canada.

If I could relocate to South Korea and teach EFL there again I
would. At least I don't have to pay high taxes there, plus
I always have a good option for using public transit to get
around in Korea, not to mention their cheap fares. And the
fact that I was provided free housing in Korea and still had
to pay utilities, it helped me to save enough money. I was
even able to go on vacations to nice places in Asia at a cheaper
cost in comparison to travelling to Latin America and the
Caribbean from Canada.

And speaking of utilities, if you want to complain about hydro
cost, come here to Ontario.
