Park Geun-hye gets 24 years in prison
« on: April 06, 2018, 03:45:21 pm »
Only mentioning this because South Africa could use a lesson from Korea on how to deal with corrupt politicians.

For all its faults, this country does a lot of things right.

Yet one of the main people involved in the corruption is sitting in his plush office at Samsung. Just proves who actually runs the Republic of Samsung.

Hence, 'for all its faults'

They like to scapegoat people.

They choose a wangtta to symbolize something that is wrong, then victimize them.

This does not fix the ills of society. Because most people continue acting in all the same ways that produce the problems in the first place. If you want to improve things, you need laws that are ENFORCED and mass TV campaigns to change peoples ATTITUDES.

^This

It's essentially an opportunity for everyone to get a cheap shot in and kick the school bully, while he's on the floor getting lynched. The Sewol captain, that speed-skater, any celebrity caught with some cannabis in their system, the nut lady, while some of them deserve what they got, it's pure mob justice and simply a means for a rather depressed, unhappy and stressed out populous to get out a little frustration; it is NOT indicative of a healthy judiciary.

On the contrary, it's South Korea which could take inspiration from South Africa's judicial system, particularly the division of powers. Unlike South Korea, South Africa's judiciary has remained steadfast and relatively incorruptible, even after immense pressure from the executive.

Just like China, SK's judiciary is a political tool to influence public opinion and used by those in power to destroy political competition.

They are guaranteed 2 terms - one in office, one in prison.

Iíve said this before, but Koreaís civil law system (I.e. no common law precedents) combined with lack of enforcement of many laws tends to put most people in a position where weíve (knowingly or not) done something illegal. Most of us will never face any consequences, but the angry mob (or a jilted lover you onced shared a joint with) can change that quickly.

I stand corrected.  Ha ha.  I had the news story last night before that said she was convicted but not sentenced.

Wow.  Thats more than the former dictators got.  Seems a bit harsh to blame a culture and system of corruption on her.  Maybe a few years or something.

Only the bad ones.  The two liberal presidents didn't go to prison, I think Moon Jae In is highly unlikely to go either.

One liberal threw him self off a cliff and the other was lucky to avoid being implicated with his son's corruption. If a conservative had immediately followed KDJ there is a pretty good chance they would have tried harder to bring him down.

Interesting that Moon Jae-in is conveniently presiding over the evisceration of all of his political rivals and the historical political opposition, and nobody seems to care. He really thinks the next conservative president won't come after him?

A couple of them received the death penalty.  It's really a matter of when they get pardoned.

She got to keep most of the money she and her accomplice(s) looted. Plus she'll be out in the next 5 years anyway under a presidential pardon.

Not a bad stint to go through for what could end up amounting to tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars.
