Any thoughts on Star Wars: The Last Jedi?
« on: December 18, 2017, 12:24:25 pm »
SPOILER ALERT
If you haven't watched it, you might want to skip this thread.

Any thoughts on the movie? I find it hard to make up my mind regarding this film.
Visually, it was fantastic. But otherwise...

I just found it went nowhere and it was difficult to care about the characters.
* Rey, Poe, and Finn - There was little character development on their part during this movie. They simply aren't interesting characters.
* The humor- Was this a Marvel film? Was this a parody? The transmission call at the beginning of the movie
was totally out of touch with the movie
* Leia - Flying through the air...really??!!
* Casino scene - Trying to recreate Mos Eisley Cantina??
* Rose- New character that got way too much screen attention at the expense of more important characters(Perhaps they wanted more Asian characters as that is a big market for ticket sales.

Any comments?

It was a screwfest from the beginning. Many critics on other sites like Rotten tomatoes have less than pleasant audience scores for it with quite a few calling it a rehash of the old trilogy. I blame Abrams for screwing it up. Something else that was bothering me while I watched it was that Hollywood apparently is going all PC.

Like you said, I felt that Poe and Finn were wasted for the most part. I felt like if Finn had destroyed the door breaker (or whatever it was called) by suicide bombing into it then it would have been awesome! But of course dumbass Rose had to say "I saved you" and kissed him then passed out? Horrible acting.

Rey literally was able to move rocks and fight on par with Snokes red guard (whatever they are called) without really being trained in the way of the lightsaber which I thought was a huge slap in the face to fans. She is suddenly that powerful? Bullshit.

The casino scene reminded me that apparently whites males are the bad guys while anyone else of color is on the side of the resistance, although there were a few people of color on the first orders side lol. Along with the del toro scene needing to be only 5 minutes long rather than the 20 or so that they stretched his character.

Luke - completely wasted character. I was expecting him to swing full circle and be a badass and die a hero's death. But no, lets let him almost fall off a rock after force projection and then stare at the sun and suddenly just dip out. The humor scenes with him too completely just ugh!

Sorry but I was not a happy person haha

I liked the humour.

The original Star Wars is the first movie I remember seeing as a child.

The iron scene: I said to my wife, ďthat looks like steam iron!Ē Before they zoomed or cut out. (Didnít see the transition.)

I still really enjoyed it, but I have the same sort of feelings about the character development (or lack there-of) and the plot. For such a long movie, not a lot really happened. There were some really great scenes, and it was visually really fun, but... as a whole, certainly not the best. As for the humor, it definitely felt forced and I had the same thoughts about Marvel-pandering.

@JNM: I did chuckle at the iron, and whispered to my bf that I thought it looked like an iron.

That extended Sean Connery cameo was really distracting.  When he walked past there was a lot of noise but I think he said "There can only be one Jedi!"

It was very disappointing. Out of the 2.5 hours, only .5 of it was decent. Finn's side story with Rose was just a complete waste of time. Leia should've just died and that be the sendoff for Carrie Fisher (no, they just had to give her force powers). The entire movie is one slow chase scene with the First Order chasing the Resistance (they didn't have a bunch of smaller faster ships that could've blown up the ship?). Luke was very much wasted in this movie, and Snoke went out before we even knew a single thing about him. Not to mention one of the few moments that could've possibly redeemed it was ruined by making the obvious choice (would've loved to have seen what would happen if Rey and Kylo joined up). There were a few very cool moments that were undercut by the rest of the movie. The ship jumping to lightspeed and that still, silent image was awesome. Rey and Kylo fighting together, also awesome. It's such a shame because Force Awakens created such a good background for this to follow, and the beginning of the movie made it seem like it had such good potential.

I really hope the 9th movie redeems the series (if it's even possible at this point). This'll be hard to recover from. I love Star Wars, but this was just pure disappointment.

The hiring of Kelly Marie Tran is as much pandering to the Chinese market as John Bodega is to the Kenyan market and Daisy Ridley is to the German one.
Her family name makes it pretty obvious that she's of Vietnamese ethnicity, not Chinese.
I kind of like how the Star Wars series has always been pretty diverse. I also like how they don't make a big deal out of it.

I thought Smoke was also a wasted character.  He supposed to be so powerful yet goes down so easily.

Not a great movie but childhood nostalgia for the originals maintained me even through the prequels.

If Chewie ever gets killed, that will be the thing that finally gets me to abandon this franchise.

Any movie that relies on cute, cuddly animals is shit.  I didn't see any cute fuzzies in Ridley Scott's
Alien.  And I didn't see any cute cuddlies in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Etc., etc.  Any movie
that does is aimed at kindergarten and below.

It was garbage from beginning to end.  I am glad I downloaded the cam and didn't waste my money.

I used to be a big Star Wars fan.  And had it been a good movie, I would have then gone to a theater
with my family.  Let me ask you this.  If I had wasted my money and gone to a theater first, and then
decided I wanted my money back, would Hollywood oblige?  No, of course not.  That is why they have
raked in over half a billion dollars so far. But any other product I buy, say from a department store or
Ebay or something, I can get my money refunded if I am not satisfied.  So f**k Hollywood.

Needed less inconsequential plot and more Kylo shirtless scenes.

When I was watching the only group that seemed like a conscious move to increase was white women. I guess I didn't like Rose, but she didn't seem like token to me. It would make sense that because Leia was in charge that she would hire others that she would agree with and are like her. Similarly to how a man would be more likely to hire men like him.

I think a lot of the hate towards this movie is from the anti-sjw crowd. The majority of it, I think is misplaced.

This was not a good movie. Everyone who hated it will still watch the next one, so no real concern from Disney's end. Kinds will like it, and they will ask for porg toys. Disney wins no matter the quality of its established franchises.

The nature of movies make it difficult to refund. Durex, I want my money back as well as 10,000x18 would similarly not work.

Is it really difficult?  A web based program that records your thoughts on the film.
Then a final exit page where you input your Paypal data.  That wasn't so hard, was it?

For a lot of movies I would never use a system like this.  Some movies I don't care for, but
couldn't be bothered to do it.  And then some movies, that are just puerile garbage,
I wood use this system in a heartbeat.

Will Hollywood ever do this?  What do you think?
