Anyone transferred at Hong Kong Airport?
« on: May 08, 2011, 04:10:00 pm »
I'm looking at my options for flying home and the cheapest option seems to be a flight that connects in Hong Kong. The catch is that the stop is only 1  hour and 10 minutes (and of course, flights stat boarding 30 minutes prior to take off).

Has anybody connected in Hong Kong before and how easy and quick was it for you to get through security and on to your next flight? The last thing I want is to be stranded...

Book the flights together and as long as you luggage is 'checked through' to your final destination, you should be okay. If not, they'll put you on the next flight.
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think you'll need to go through security in Hong Kong if it's just a connecting flight.

I know I don't have to go through immigration and customs. I'm more concerned about the terminals being miles apart like they are in some airports...

I've flown to SA, via HK a few times, with SAA, and with CX, with +- an hour layover, and I've never had a problem

I`ve flew several times to Bangkok with a 1 hour stopover/connecting flight in Hong Kong.

Each time all the passengers had to go through the security check again for hand luggage (not through  immigration again though) from what I remember.

Even with 1 hour 10 mins you should be fine.

I did this.  It was a never-to-be-repeated experience.  I arrived at one end of the airport and had to do the check-in/security check to go to the other end of the airport.  The security check took forever and I had to run across the airport (it's huge!) to get to my gate.  Even if you are in sight of your gate there's 20 or 30 m between them and (of course) my gate was at the end of the walkway.

Check with your travel agent, but try to leave plenty of time.

Most international layovers in Asia require additional security/ customs/ immigration checks.  There should be someone there looking at tickets in line, if you are running late they will make sure you get through the line quickly.  I'd buy the ticket.

Ya I'm also kind of worried about this. I had to go through immigration in China when I just had a layover there and it took forever.

Hong Kong is a big airport but super easy to get around. You will probably have to rush to get to your next flight but I'm sure you'll be fine. I had layovers in Hong Kong and I didn't need to go through security again or anything. When I checked in in Incheon I just told them my final destination and they checked my bags all the way through. If for some reason you do miss your flight they will just put you on the next one.
