I live in Yuseong-Gu, Daejeon too and need a dentist! ;) My co-teacher knows a dentist that she sent the former native teacher too and they speak English. I can't give it to you today but maybe I can ask her tomorrow and post it.  ;D

there's a huge dentist hospital about three minutes from city hall subway station. it's close to the office of education.

but that's all i can tell you about it!! hahahaa.

it's a GIANT building though. but it could just be for specialisations....?

You are lucky. I travel from Suwon to go to Boston Dental, it's near city hall in Dunsan Dong. He studied at Boston University. Better than my dentist in America and I've never had a cavity in my life!

How do you know they're better if you've never had any real work done?  Any dentist not giving me a root canal seems good to me.

Good point. I guess all my statement can give you is a good place to start in your search for your dentist in Korea, especially in and around Daejeon. While there are no doubt many good dentists who speak English in Korea, I can speak from experience that it is possible to have a dentist here who can make even routine dental work very stressful.

I have heard that getting a clean and polish here is very affordable. Lets put it down to no fluoride in toothpaste or whatever...does anybody know if this is actually true? Also in Daejeon, and I would love to go  8)

I got my GF to look on Naver (you could do it with limited Korean ability too, I'm just lazy) for dentists. They have maps and people comment on how good they are. She found me one with good reviews that also claimed to be English speaking (in Korean, weird). When I went there, the place had closed! There were a few other dentists in the same building so I just poked my head in the door. The second place I went to within 10 minutes the (average speaker, but nice fella) dentist had me in the chair and I was one wisdom tooth lighter.

My advice would just be to find where the dentists are in your area and go looking. They tend to cluster in certain areas, I have found. Go poke around, chances are you will find something suitable. If you don't like the look of the place move on. If you are looking the chances are if he is any good the dentist will be happy to have a few words with you. Competition seems quite stiff in the dental field here. The opposite of back home in NZ>

the one i went to to get my wisdom teeth out last year was okay. but... i sort of had a nervous breakdown after 90 minutes of the guy hacking at my tooth. i'm not sure i could take the embarrassment of going back there! i'll have my partner help me out too  ;D

yes, i think so too.

the nurses were really understanding and only laughed a little bit at my uncontrollable sobs and tears. i would've laughed a lot... heck! i was laughing at myself ten minutes later.

i also have very long roots, and the tooth he was pulling was below a nerve. that didn't help matters at all...

no, i think i'll go to a different chigwa. there are plenty of them around!

I can recommend a very good, experienced, and English speaking dentist in Daejeon who studied in Australia and got her degree from there. The address details are as follows:

Cho & Lee Dental Clinic
Dr. Gloria Cho
#233 Wolpyeong-Dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon
Ph: 042-484-1151

The practice is on the third floor.

For anyone who lives in northern Daejeon, either on KAIST campus or anywhere near KAIST:

You can visit KAIST Clinic Pappalardo Center for your dental or medical check-up and requests. Their dentistry department is located on the 2nd floor, and the dentist that takes foreign speakers is Sue Bean Cho (photo of the front door - )

https://clinic.kaist.ac.kr/eng - I've been to this clinic many times and you can usually see lots of Korean students there around noon (be aware that most offices in Korea have a lunch break around 1pm-2:30pm). While this is not a major hospital, most of the doctors there speak basic English. For more serious problems (such as making biopsy for dermatology) they have also given me references to their main hospital in Daejeon, which is Chungnam National University Hospital - 충남대학교병원 -  https://www.cnuh.co.kr/english/ This particular hospital has an English speaking info booth, and they have as well supplied translators on site for free.

They call "tooth cleaning" as "scaling", not sure why, but it was a source of confusion the last time I've been there. They do more complicated procedures there up to dental surgery and making implants. The cost for cleaning without insurance was 40,000 won and the cost for implant without insurance is 1.5-2 mil won, which is way cheaper than in US where they can charge up to $5-4,000 per implant, but perhaps not at cheap as medical tourism in Mexico where I heard implants can go for as low as $700.

They also have a pharmacy located right next to this medical center at their West entrance, that has been relatively cheap. For example a week-long course of antibiotics has costed only 8-9K won without insurance.
