FBI Background Check and Apostille
« on: November 02, 2016, 12:18:32 am »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a service that can do both an FBI background check AND get the document apostilled all in one go? It seems inefficient to get the FBI check through a channeler, pay  $50-75 and wait 1-2 weeks, and then once I get it send it back to someone to do the apostille for $195 and wait another 1-2 weeks.

Anyone found a more efficient way to do this?

$195 for an apostille is absurd!

If you mail the documents to the State Department, the fee is $8 per apostilled document.

Even better, if you live near the D.C. area, you can drop off the documents to be apostilled in person and pick them up in three business days.

What is the turn around time on that?

This is the website that I was referred to by a recruiter...says $195 for the first document.

http://www.apostillefbi.com/rates/

So that is a total rip-off?

The turnaround from Dept of State was, in my experience, similar to what you posted above. I paid the $8 plus however much it cost for the return. I think you can still have a prepaid envelope inside that they put stuff in to return.

Well if its not any faster to go through this website, then why the $195? How are they even making any money?

My guess would be kickbacks? I can't imagine why the markup of nearly $200 is justified when there isn't a significant added benefit.

Why do high-end Korean TVs in Korea cost hundreds of dollars more than the total of ordering one from the US, paying for shipping across the globe, plus the duty fees?

People don't know any better and think it's the only way. Plus, the site makes it seem legit.

I see. So you're saying there is no reason to no go through the state department directly?

Apostilles usually take 10 business days from when the document is received if simply sent to the Department of State.

In any case, if you're worried about the waiting, don't use the $195 option. It's stupid to do so.

Instead, if you need them quicker:

http://www.usauthentication.com/rates-us-authentication/
This says they charge you $47 for the apostille (and nice that they do the full disclosure that the Feds charge $8 of that). And it says they take 4-5 business days.

https://www.uslegalization.com/
Says that it's $37 (also says $35 so not sure). And says it'll take 3 business days.

But you might have to pay for expedited shipping...

Thank you. Looks like I should wait until I have both my FBI background check and notarized diploma, and then send both at the same time to get apostilled using one of those 2 sites you mentioned.

I am having this issue right now.

Is the FBI background check and apostille done only in the states?

I moved to Korea at the beginning of the year and did not know that certain employers require this.  Is there any way to get this done ASAP while in Korea?

Thanks for the help.

The above sites can help you obtain a federal apostille for your FBI check (if you want to speed things up). You should obtain the apostille for the notarized copy of your diploma from your own state. Read this thread:

You should just send your notarized diploma to your state's department of state. It will be cheaper and in most states, that's a pretty quick process as they don't receive nearly the same volume of those as the Federal State Department.
