If ever was the phrase 'nothing to do with you' relevant then this is the case.

Is it really necessary to go online to vent about something so ridiculously trivial?

As petty and stupid as some of the stuff I see on this site is this is really the first time I've felt the need to remind someone that this isn't facebook or twitter.

My thoughts exactly.
It's a student, they are curious about teachers, specially foreign ones. Also if the kid said it in English, it's just practicing.

You don't need to submit court evidence. Just tell him you researching about greatness of Korea's Dokdo and Hangul and he will think you are a cool guy instead of an arrogant shady foreign teacher.

Why does it matter? Does say the obvious. People here are all curious about foreigners. No need to be a jerk about it.

Lol, this guy.. :undecided:

I feel so bad for your students.

Then again, maybe he's just "trolling" us all, because he's bored on a Friday.

That could be said for a few others IMO

Have people always bashed people this much on this site?

I don't remember it being so.... but maybe I'm just awake to it.

Yeah, it's sad because just a few years ago, this site was filled with contrary people with weird points of view (just like it is now ) who were still able to present their arguments and have passionate discussions without immediately resorting to name calling and culture bashing.
I miss the juxtaposition of well researched, eloquently written drivel.

This site has been nerfed for the sensitivity of those reading it.  I guess when u live in a mentally weak country that can't take comments against it's view, you tone it down.  No babe u aren't fat, that dress is tight.

Example:  Korean:  Why do Waygooks think driving is so bad in Korea?
Fact:     Korea is in the top 10 crash per car and 10 pedestrian deaths in the world.

Keep telling yourself it's okay.  Let's see how it plays out.

And with that post, I think OP pretty much just got exactly what they were after.

Really, if it turns out that this was some sort of social experiment and this was one of the presumed outcomes, then I gotta give it props, because that's good stuff.

This would be pathetically small potatoes for a troll topic. The equivalent of shoplifting a single piece of gum or something. No troll wants to see a bunch of people walk into his topic and say "we all think this is a stupid waste of time, right? oh! we actually do all agree on this...wow"

God, what a bunch of weird reactions!

Why have a Korean expat community if having the slightest complaint, no matter how specious, is treated as if you'd set fire to a pile of kimchi and then covered the pile with the Imperial flag of Japan?

Yes, the OP said something a bit silly. What they didn't say was:

"My kids are little shits."
"I hate my students."
"korea sucks."

...or anything similar.

You've never had a kid hell-bent on looking at your phone, computer screen , in your bag? You've never had a bad day and overreacted to a minor annoyance? What a bunch of magnificent saints you all must be.

Also, OP, chill.

this post seems to be a common occurrence for some of us. but i would have to say, out of the 'stupid topics', this one has taken the cake, for the week.

While I do think that this particular thread is ridiculous, from start to finish, I have been thinking the same thing. The time I've spent on here has dropped drastically throughout the past month or so because posters seem to have become more defensive, rude, bitter, and angry as of late.

I'm curious where in this thread you came up with the idea someone was offended on behalf of Korea. The only post I see that even directly mentions Korea for any reason is insulting Koreans.

Edit: and sejong's sarcastic post about the awesomeness of Dokdo.

Well, what I see happening is OP made a throwaway post, and now people are arguing about all of the usual stuff that people argue about on this thread.
"People are too sensitive."
"Koreans are delusional."
"Expats are delusional."
"You're cynical and disengaged."
"You're naive."
The statement is that it takes very little for people on this forum to take a molehill of a post and turn it into a mountain of cultural criticism.

I stand by my statement. When you make a pointless topic people post pointless things in it until something gets picked up on. Given that this site is about teaching English in Korea it was more likely than anything else that Korea/teachers/teaching would somehow become the subject.

Yeah, it's sad because just a few years ago [we] were still able to... have passionate discussions without immediately resorting to name calling and culture bashing.
I guess when u live in a mentally weak country that can't take comments against it's view, you tone it down.
Fact:     Korea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delusion

With some judicious use of omission, rearranging, and out-of-contexting, I think I've managed to turn your reply into a beautiful example of exactly what I meant.

Also, while culture bashing is kind of annoying and repetitious, I can more or less shrug it off (it's not like people are attacking MY particular culture/subculture), it's the ad hominems that really bug me: they're cheap, and hardly ever produce any thought provoking or entertaining desk-warming fodder.
Unless it was Smaug doing it.
Reading posts from what appeared to be a retarded, English(ish) teaching dragon that berate somebody for not thinking something through was truly amusing.

I'll admit the part of Dokdo was over the top, but my point was OP has a problem as a person and a teacher.

OP is a poor teacher who is more interested in playing with his phone that engaging with students. Sure it is none of the student's business and sure OP has some right to privacy in the classroom and wasn't in the middle of a lesson, but still students are your students inside and outside of the classroom.

As I said instead of completely blowing them off to look at your phone take a second and lie to them (I'm telling my friend how beautiful the flowers look around namsan these days) if you really don't want to tell them you are texting your friend, spying on the government, trading stocks, or shopping for used vintage women's undergarments.

Sure some people get over sensitive about Korea and sure some people whine about Korea a lot, but this post is actually about a guy who is being a jerk of a teacher and I'm criticizing him for beign a poor teacher and a moody character rather than a Korean basher with a racially based superiority issue.

One of my students asked me why I was cleaning the board today. I turned around and it wasn't really one of the students. It was a bear. The bear swiped at me tearing my shirt and drawing blood. I climbed onto the computer to try and escape but I then realized it wasn't a computer... it was another bear. I survived but the results were grisly. I can't even bear to think about it.

Like someone already mentioned it's really easy to manipulate their curiosity with quick lie or change of topic. All I have to do is say 땅땅 and my students will get so excited that they forget about me and talk about chicken for the next 5 minutes.

I've had students physically open my bag or grab my phone out of my hand instead of asking "what are you doing"? That would be worth complaining about.

A few of my students asked me why I had my door open during class change today. I asked them to come in, close the door. Then we all got on the floor and walked the dinosaur.
