Title: (YBM) Grade 5, Lesson 4 "Say Hello to the Class"
Post by: mrpopo on April 04, 2012, 06:23:16 am
Here's a video I made for this lesson. If you taught 5th & 6th grade last year you may have seen my other videos. I'll be doing more for both grades in these books, as well as 4th grade (4th book on the 2011 list, Looks like:  real heads with cartoon bodies Publisher: 천재교육, Chunjae). Enjoy!

...so this chapter is a review of chapter 1, 2, and 3? using them all together? anyone else think this too little material for an entire chapter?

Yes I totally agree with you. It is possibly the worst chapter of any book I have seen to date. It's like they went for the Harry Potter theme and failed. Even my co-teacher thinks this chapter is crap. We are basically just going to do our own activities and reuse some games from the last chapters. Some games got cut short and other classes didn't get to play all of them. So... there we go. And there are many canceled classes this coming week so we will just skip the lesson entirely.

Haven't finished my lesson plans yet but we are thinking doing some more of the game Evolution and Soldiers and Ninjas. I wont re-post them here because you can find those games in the other chapter links on waygook.

I do have a video link you might find interesting if you are going to play the evolution game with your students. Most Korean 5th graders don't know what evolution means so you can show them this Simpsons video to introduce it. It's pretty good for showing what evolution is and it's about a 1:20 mins long.

As this lesson is kind of light on new content, I'm going to use this opportunity to teach the difference between "ing" and "ed" adjectives such as interesting/interested. After hearing too many "Teacha, I'm boring" it's time.

"-ed" adjectives describe how someone feels
"-ing" adjectives describe the people or things that cause the feelings

I am interested in X. X is interesting to me.

Not quite sure how to do this without boring everyone though!

Forgot to say the ppt is from busyteacher org. I simplified it a little.

Nice video Adam! I'm sure my kids will love it.

Hey guys, here are my ideas for Ch.4, hope these are useful to you!

SECTION2- make your own role play! For some reason waygook.org won't let me attach the guidelines, an example, and a worksheet for students to make their own role play. I'll try to upload them later. The idea is that they have to use 8 of the key expressions from ch1-3 (On the guidelines, there's a list of rules and expressions from the 4 chapters, and they have to use at least 8 in their role play). My students are really creative and love stuff like this!

SECTION3 - Interview your partner. I'm going to make name cards that will look something like this:

Name: G-dragon
Nationality:
Favorite subject:
Hobby:

Each student will get a namecard, then fill out their namecard with whatever they want. We'll also give them interview questions:

Sample questions:
-What's your name?
-Where are you from?
-What's your favorite subject?
-What are you interested in?
-Why?

Then they will interview each other!

SECTION4
Advanced - Pass the story: this is an activity where each student writes 1 or 2 sentences, then passes their paper on to the next student and they continue each others' stories! This is another fun creative activity.

Basic- Whisper Game: line students up in at least 2 teams and whisper a sentence to the last person (ex. - where are you from?) Students have to pass the sentence up the line, and the last person writes it in on the board. Fastest team wins!

SECTION5 - students will role play the role plays that they made in section 2. If there's extra time left, they will also role play the story in the book (for some reason my students REALLY LOVE role playing).

This worked pretty well for me today.  I used a Harry Potter theme for the key words and expressions and the kids enjoyed it.  As for the activities, I had a de-scramble activity where student had to write the actual word in their notebook, then hold it up.  The first kid to hold up their notebook was given a sticker.  I also had them go around and interview three other students using the key phrases learned throughout the last three chapters.  The new key phrase is "What are you interested in?"

The chapter is way weird, but it's a good chance to get students talking about what they are interested in.

Since it's nice out, we played a game outside.

Students line up in two teams (even and odd was a simple split), then myself and my co-teacher stand at a distance (one assigned to each team). One students from each line runs to the teacher, speaks an "I'm interested in..." sentence, receives a high five, runs back to their team, and the next student takes a turn. The team to get through all students fastest wins. After a round of "I'm interested, we did he/she, We are, and they are.

They were crazy about it and we all got to get some vitamin d!

I don't think this chapter is that bad.  I appreciate the curriculum writers attempt to review in an inclusive way.  It's not perfect but it gives the students another opportunity to learn/review previous topics in a different context.

Anywho, here's a reading game...I call it, Rhythm Reading.  Basically, you divide your students into groups. Have a few reading passages to put up on the screen. Using a metronome, students go around reading one word of the passage to the beat.  If a student messes up, they are out.  Once a students messes up or you've gone around the room twice reading the same passage, you increase the metronome rhythm.  (you can also keep the same passage and just increase the rhythm).  You start off easy, 60bpm and can go all the way up to 240bpm.  The player who wins, wins a point for their team. I can't attach the metronome files but you can find those on Youtube.

The ppt addresses "I like (to) + (verb)" vs "I like (verb) + (ing)"

I modified a find your partner game i found on waygook to fit this lesson (thanks pbfconnor).
I'm using it for the speaking lesson. it's good because it helps them practice say it sentences. And they get to move around the classroom. (it's for an open class for parents)

Example:
A: Hi, I知 Hiccup. (hiccups)
B: Hi, I知 Sneeze. (ah-choo) Are you interested in sports?
A: No, I知 interested in drawing.
B: Nice to meet you.
A: Nice to meet you, too.

Then when they find their partners, they have to come and introduce their partner to me to get a sticker!
A: Say hello to Ms. Joanna.
B: Hi, I知 Sneeze.

I laminated the cards so that they'd last all of my classes.
And you have to really drill the sentences so they actually use them during the activity but i think the repetition in the ppt helps with that.

I agree that having the book suddenly switch courses and having the chapter take place in a magic land with Sneeze and Hiccup partaking in their favorite class, "Broom," seemed borderline psychotic.  However, it allowed me to elaborate a bit and I introduced some other new students...namely Fart, Burp, and Cough.  Might as well teach some more useful bodily words.  Here is a very simple powerpoint that I made.  The kids really ate it up and will never forget the vocab :)  Hope you find it useful.

I know this may be a bit late since most of you are probably further into the chapter but I though I'd put it up anyway.
I'm only at this school once a week and my co-t. and I use the 20min (Co-T using the textbook) 20min (me, using either the Fun & Fun activites if they're workable, or my own activites).
So this is not a full lesson PPT.  But it's a vocab and dialogue practice and then explanation of how to play the Fun & Fun 1 activity.

The students pretty much enjoyed it and it worked well because I could actually play it with them using the powerpoint (click on the individual cards in the powerpoint to flip them over individually, and flip them back again at will).

Anyway - hope it's useful for some people.

P.S.  I stress the "CAREFULLY, take out the cards on p.219" 'coz I don't about you guys but I find the perferation is terrible in this book, it rips so easily :-(

It's late but hopefully people next year can make use of this as it's quite nifty (well, I would say), and it is adaptable for other topics as well.

So, here is a battleship game PPT I made and the accompanying sheet template for students to use.

I think it's self-explanatory but message me if you need any further explanation.

The chapter being an obvious "homage" to Harry Potter, as others have noted, I have added English subs to the potions class scene from the Philosopher's Stone.  I have also added material to the HP ppt created by Ei8ht and improved by livingkorean, and made it more interactive for the students.  Next, I made a handout with some fill-ins for the Period 2 conversation, about Mr Monster's house.

One more activity to add.  I changed the "Sleeping Elephants" game into "Sleeping Dragons" to fit the magic theme.

This is for part 2- A hidden pictures warm up, some stuff from the book, and then a 'go fish' game using the cards in the back of the book for this chapter.
