Title: Korean friends
Post by: VanIslander on April 09, 2022, 10:26:33 pm
My Korean best bro and i watch movies and have dinner together ever Friday, usually at his place, sometimes at restaurants or his hagwon. We have been doing this for 5 years. His wife and daughter go to his grandparents home then.

My Canadian best bro back 2004-2009 and I used to go shopping together, Seoul mostly, sometimes for massages, he wanting to push the envelope. K. Until he returned to Canada. I worry he may be a bad man. Who knows?

Who's your best friend in Korea?

(Your wife is an option.)

I've had one particular Korean friend for 14 years now. Although we rarely hang out much nowadays. Maybe twice a year. To be fair I feel guilty for not improving my Korean enough to make our time together more interesting. At the same time, her English level has faded a lot, so she feels its not that rewarding to hang out that much like we used to. We're still on friendly terms though.

I've had other friends for years at a time. Eventually they have done something to disappoint or betray me in some way and I have cut them off.

Then there's the hit and run ajosshi friends who act like you're their long-lost brother. A week later once their curiosity is satisfied and they don't like the stares they get for being seen with a foreigner. Then they ghost you. I can usually spot these types but the fact is, you have to go through the fake friends to find the real ones.

I had a friend... At least I thought we were. He told me I should stop eating eggs because it will kill me. It was basically eggs or that friend. I chose the eggs.

I feel like it was harder for me to make friends with Korean women......in general we just don't really have the same style, interests, or hobbies etc and it just seemed forced and fake or just for English practice....
any Korean men were just interested in English, dating, or me finding them a foreigner to date....so I can't say I have any true Korean friends outside of one who is a good guy but became friendly at first because it was cool to have foreign friends....turns out he was a mutual friend of my husband too

Unwise. Poulty plans lead to fowl results.

Korean friends are more like life friends opposed to waygook friends I meet.

Korean friends are more sincere and fun to hang out with.

Waygook friends come and go. I’d also bet if you met them back in their home country they would be either totally different or even ignore you.

That's certainly true.

The era of "free english" friends is mostly over.

If you make a Korean friend nowadays, they're likely to be legit.

This. Westerners don’t have the value 정. There’s a lack of realness, a fakeness, that is present with my “friends” in the West. They don’t know it, that’s just the only way they’ve ever been.

You need to make better friends. Of course, they could just be reacting to the vibe you're putting out.

Friends
How many of us have them?
Friends
Ones we can depend on

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I36VJ2CXiNs

Some are okay, and they treat you real cool
And some mistake your kindness for being a fool
We like to be with some, because they're funny
Others come around when they need some money
Some you grew up with, around the way
And you're still real close to this very day
Homeboys through the summer, winter, spring and fall
And then there's some we wish we never knew at all
And this list goes on, again and again
But these are the people that we call friends

A lot of westerners are too conditional, they care too much about how they look to society at large.

as you mature your reference point switches from caring too much about what other people think.

Korean friends are better simply because they 'live here'. They have better and more insightful things to say about the situation. Finding a durable 'Western' friend is a rarity but that's usually a function of them being North American and/or lame-o TEFL types. Both of which are usually dull and self-absorbed.

Sounds like a thing you haven't quite figured out.
