Title: Decision
Post by: Justletmesleep on September 03, 2021, 12:00:51 pm
I'm looking for some advice. I have two choices to make. I can either stay in my city and find a new apartment, or I can try to move to Seoul (incheon or bucheon area) at the end of the semester. I would have to get a new apartment either way. Should I go through the hassle of getting an apartment in my city which I like but there is nothing to do or Seoul where I have so much fun just adventuring around. Also, I was only planning to live one more year in my current city before trying to move to seoul anyways.

I'd look and apply for the jobs first.  It seems that you want to live up in Bucheon or Incheon (west of Seoul, but not Seoul if that matters)  so scout out jobs and apply.  You can always decline a position but I would definitely sort out employment first.

Two reasons to move to the Western area of metro Seoul. The only thing holding you back is you hadn't planned to move yet? You like where you are but have so much fun in the capital area.

It sounds like moving there is a move forward and a move to another apartment where you are is a lateral move that's a hassle.

Based on info given.

You could gain more specific info on each option before committing:

Certainly consider applying for jobs in the area you want to live; concurrently, possibly inquire about officetel or another less long-term accommodation where you are (a trip to a local real estate office with a local friend or coworker should do the trick).

Then make a more informed decision.

Or,... follow your gut and just do it (whatever it is).

Good luck whatever. :)

Organize your priorities and benefits and costs.

Example
High Priority:
Social Life in Seoul - Seoul
I Like My City - Buwon/Innam

Medium Priority:
Facilitate move - Seoul

Low Priority:
Housing Cost - Buwon

Seoul Benefits
Social Life
Dining
Adventure

Seoul Costs
Commute Time
Rent

Buwon Benefits
Nice City
Cleaner Air
Less to do (Save money)

Buwon Costs
Less to do
Apartment Sucks

Then simply look at the costs and benefits and priorities and assess which matches up the most and then you will have your decision.

I mean, whatever, they're you're own. But when you organize it visually and then apply values to everything, it can become easier.

Do you have any advice on the best way to go about finding a job in Seoul? I've heard about going through a recruiter but have never heard any mention of specific ones.

When you did Korvia a second time, did you need to go to orientation?

I didn't, but I had already done it twice and it doesn't seem to happen where I am anymore.  Haven't been to a Gepik event in years.

I always liked visiting Seoul but I never wanted to live there. Plus it's really cold in winter. I lived in Daegu for 3 years and it was busy enough for me, and easy to get around to the rest of the country. Anyway good luck.

Personally I would just go back home or try another country.  Do not stay here.  Why not try Vietnam?

Vietnam is a complete gong show right now with the virus. I have a friend who just arrived in Colombia to start teaching. She says there's lots of need and plenty of work. As an aside, she's an anti-vaxxer and obviously unvaccinated. She has a high school diploma and a CELTA, no university.

I'd love to go to Colombia. A few years ago it was voted as one of the 10 best countries for an ex-pat to retire in.

Did she mention the pay and benefits for English teaching in Columbia in 2021? What’s the situation on the ground?

No she hasn't told me about pay or benefits yet. She got there last Thursday and wandered around Bogota for a couple of days. She was asked about teaching and if she was available etc, she wasn't interested because it's too cold so she would not stay in Bogota. She's from deep south California and lived here in SE Asia where a bitterly cold winter day is +20C. Anything less than 30C and she was in a thick sweater LOL. She never used air-con and her classroom was unbearably hot and the students complained all the time. She's heading for the coast now to legitimately start checking for work. I'll hear more in a couple of days.

Here her monthly electric bill averaged $2.00. Mine is $60 on average.

A colleague here is Vietnamese and in touch with family and friends back there. She says at this time you aren't even allowed to leave your house. Cops deliver food to you. It sounds really messed up.

I'd like to get boots on the ground info about Colombia too.

That and a good cup of Columbian coffee can transform you into the Energizer bunny.

Yeah, unfortunately, it keeps us here in Korea.  Gun to the head hostage kind of thing.  Gotta wait till 2022 sometime, hopefully, for Vietnam and China to open up.  Korea will be in for a rude awakening then.  2022 or 2023.  It can be pig headed at it's own demise.

I'd be curious to ehar about Columbia.  Pay prob not that great.  Guess it's good for a rich kid with no loans or in no need of money.  Prob good experience for them.

Why did 2022 get skipped over? Is there something special about 2023?

Will the world be back to normal within a year’s time? We hope so… but what’s the likelihood with all the new strains and booster shots that are gonna be needed. The fear of coronavirus and all its variants will be front and center for a long time it seems.

Uhm, we've all been tempting, begging in fact, for you to lead this charge out of Korea and into China. Heck, I bet if you started a waygook.org GoFundMe for a one-way ticket to China, you'd get action.
