I usually watch semi educational news or mini documentaries.  Occasionally an amateur video show casing daily life in some random country around the world.  IE  Russia or elsewhere.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHKRfxkMTqiiv4pF99qGKIw

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0woBco6Dgcxt0h8SwyyOmw

https://www.youtube.com/user/CaspianReport

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC22BdTgxefuvUivrjesETjg

https://www.youtube.com/user/NationalGeographic

I dislike this guys woke nonsense, but occasionally he has a few interesting tidbids thrown in.  So, I watch sometimes.

https://www.youtube.com/user/johnnymangosteen

Vice is also left leaning but occasionally will do an interesting or fair piece.  So, I will watch sometimes.

https://www.youtube.com/user/vice

Semi biased (left) mainstream media channel from Germany but sometimes a documentary can be interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW39zufHfsuGgpLviKh297Q

Of course I will balance it out with regular news.

https://www.youtube.com/user/NewsmaxTV

I also watch some stuff over on rumble because YouTube's increasing authoritarianism and illiberal policies on expression and free speech are beyond ridiculous.

Daily life stuff as long as it's not folks living a fake life trying to be influencer.

I read stuff too.  But increasingly content gets put onto YouTube and other Video sites.  I have to have lots of knowledge crammed into my head if I'm going to discuss or argue with the likes of you all......     :police: :police: :police: :afro: :afro:

Tons of other stuff I watch that I haven't posted here, etc.

Example.

Man, there's a YT channel called JCS about Criminal psychology and it's basically police interviews with "famous" murderers. It's super interesting but HOLY HELL, SHUT UP.

I'm glad they're talking, it makes it easier to convict them, but JESUS.

SHUT UP. The human will and desire to "please" the police is so strong. SHUT UP. They waive their rights to legal counsel. "Oh yeah, now I look trustworthy."

NOOOOOOOOOOO

I've really enjoyed this guy's channel over the covid period.  Not only does he go to all these former countries of the Soviet Union, but when he gets to them he often gets out out of their big cities and randomly goes to these far flung towns and places of interest out in the sticks.  Goes to some fascinating, if not always beautiful, places.

Yeah, I watched that on  Australian TV last Tuesday night. I thought about posting it here but suspected Marti might have had an issue with it. Interesting how some highly qualified and articulate guys returning from the states have to do this kind of work because its all they can get. It puts hangooks rants about E2 wages into some perspective.

I actually felt guilty after watching this. Poor sods! Never going to complain to myself about my 19 hours a week ever again.
One of my son-in-laws has a couple of small trucks for Mart deliveries. He also works his arse off, but he knows that in a couple of years he will be able to hire someone and reduce his hours. He's young and no kids yet. Big difference. The video guys are on a whole new level though.

Saw this too when it came it. These guys have it really rough. I try my best not to order heavy stuff online and I keep a few energy drinks and iced coffees in my fridge for the delivery guys if they're delivering when I happen to be home.

I saw "Stand By Me" when it came out, the summer before I started teaching.  It was very sweary for the time, but such a potent film, it stands the test of time.

Here is a beautifully done video revisiting filming locations from the movie that was made nearly 30 years later.

For those of us into military history, I've got some great recs. These guys put the History Channel to shame. In most cases I think they are historians or have experience in their field, but they do go outside, which is fine because they know how to handle things.

1. Military History Visualized https://www.youtube.com/c/MilitaryHistory
Primarily focused on WWII, particularly the Wehrmacht. but other stuff as well Great research and first-hand events and interviews with experts.

2. Military Aviation History https://www.youtube.com/c/MilitaryAviationHistory
Also mostly focused on WWII but newer planes as well. Not quite up to the scholarly standard of MHV but still good. Also looks a bit into aviation gaming. I'd really recommend the video he does on Swiss BF-109s during WWII.

3. Greg's Airplanes & Automobiles https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCynGrIaI5vsJQgHJAIp9oSg
Probably the most hardcore of the channels on this list. He gets pretty technical and combines his background as a pilot, engineer, mechanic and military aviation history enthusiast to make great content. Also has some automobile customization and racing content. Really great research. His P-47 series is great and so are his videos on the German aviation fuel situation in WWII.

4. Drachinifel https://www.youtube.com/c/Drachinifel
Probably the channel for military naval history. I don't think his channel is quite up to the academic standards of the others, and goes a bit more for a storytelling approach at times, rather than frequently stopping to cite sources.  Still good content though.

5. Bonus- Montemayor https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX7katl3DVmch4D7LSvqbVQ
Not many videos, but his visualizations and narratives of famous battles are excellent. Seems to focus mostly on WWII Naval battles and Mexican War/Civil War-era land battles. His subscriber and views to number of posted videos ratio is rather nuts. He's posted like 10 videos total, has 314k subscribers and his videos average over a million views each. The guy is just a buff who does this in his spare time and it's excellent.

There's one where some random guy comes up to one of them alone on the playground, I think Kevin or Anne or Nami and asks for directions.

I remember this because one of my students shouted out "Byuntae!" and the whole class laughed and my CT got angry.

Careful dude! That might be misinterpreted as a a homophobic remark.

Describing something as 'very gay' is the same as describing something as 'very Indian', 'very American', 'very feminine' or 'very macho'. There's no homophobia here. You don't have to embrace or celebrate anything associated with gay culture, you just have to tolerate it.

I'll agree that the performance is pretty gay, in a creepy 'it puts the lotion on it's skin' kind of way.

I think that the issue, especially for the older crowd, is that in western North America (if not all of NA), the word "gay" was used as an insult for quite a while due to explicit homophobia still being pretty mainstream. "That's so gay." would have translated to "That's so lame." or "That's so dumb."
Of course meanings change and shift (especially with slang) but for many, those outdated, residual connotations still resonate.

Yeah, it was seen as an insult, probably still is, from where I came. If not an insult, then taking the piss out of something effeminate.

I love the late 70s and 80s music. The punk, the new wave, the new romantics. The Smiths were cool, Siouxsie and the Banshees...
Maybe even better than classic rock.

Of course meanings change and shift (especially with slang) but for many, those outdated, residual connotations still resonate.

I guess it was around mid 2010 that it became somewhat controversial to use it to refer to something lame; "I have 6 classes today... gay". Perhaps South Park was the best litmus, in the earlier seasons they'd refer to lame things as 'gay' and by the later seasons, stopped using the term. There was an episode about Harley riders being referred to as fags, which explored the debate.

As I said, if you're straight, it's perfectly ok for gay behaviour to make you feel somewhat uncomfortable. Let he who is without discomfort watch gay porn. It doesn't make you a homophobe or a fuddy-duddy, you're just being honest. There are people who don't celebrate or embrace my beliefs, they tolerate it, I do the same and that's just fine for Democracy. The line of discrimination gets crossed when someone gets treated unfairly.

Regarding the use of the word 'gay', it's fairly nuanced and depends heavily on context and until the same stance is taken for the highly offensive 'n' word I'm not willing to accept that it's anything more than flavour of the decade politics.

As with many things in the realm of satire, it's very difficult to deconstruct and we should just rely on instinct to guide as to when it's appropriate to use and when it isn't.

just copy the url and paste here and the video will automatically embed.

If you're talking about *actually* down loading a youtube vide, what you need to do is insert "pp" into the url of the video directly after "youtube".
For example:                 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtt_0OKzRek
would be changed to:  https://www.youtubepp.com/watch?v=Rtt_0OKzRek

Click the desired format and resolution and Presto! Digital piracy!

You do realise that there are homosexuals who can't relate to gay culture because that's not their deal. They're sexually attracted to people of the same sex but don't act gay.

Gay can be thought of as a culture and, like every culture, which includes film, cinema, clothing, vernacular, music or mannerisms it can be freely used in satire. The very nature of gay attributes is to be flamboyant, outrageous, fabulous and grab as much attention as possible as a contrast to, oftentimes, spending years trying to conceal one's identity. How can we not expect it to be comical and camp at times?

There are also homosexuals who are quite comfortable mocking a man who dances around with his penis pulled back and makes coats out of women's skin... many probably think it's gross creepy and so do I, who are you to tell us what every homosexual person is and isn't going to find offensive?

Does this apply to serial killers as well ? Perhaps you could provide us with some qualitative data, at least, to support this claim of homosexual people being comfortably associated with perverted serial killers. It's not good enough to just rely on your personal circle of acquaintances we'd need evidence from the broader community.

Or perhaps I could not.

If such a meta-analysis really existed do you really think I'd be bored enough to find it for you? Honestly, I'd be more curious to meet the person who'd compile such a silly and nutty research journal.

Also, don't twist my words. I never said gays would be comfortable being associated with a serial killer, you did. I, in fact, claimed the exact opposite. I'm not here to convince you of anything, just stating my views.

Where's your article to prove that, like you, every homosexual enjoys wasting their time worrying about such petty BS.

I could go my whole life either never using the word 'gay' in a satirical sense again or using it on occasion, in the right company, one could argue I swing both ways in this regard. The dynamics of the use of the word 'gay'? Ask yourself.... who really gives a sh*t?

The dynamics of the use of the word 'gay'? Ask yourself.... who really cares?

Right. That expression is so 1995 anyway.
Today all the cool kids say things like... uh... well, something else.

Virtual pints to Kyndo.

Damnit, Kyndo.  This is the first time I've understood some technology more than another poster.  I don't even know how to do multiple quotations in one post. And you're trying to educate him and take that away from me?

Don't try it Kurt.  Kyndo is just trying to get you to embed some spyware or malware into your computer.

;D ;D ;D Now I'm in the video club. Something many may come to regret.

Cool.  Now, I can add requests.  My favourite tracks from that album, and it's not easy to choose, are Little Bitch (ok, easy) and Stupid Marriage.  Throw 'em up VJ.

Thanks Kurt.  I guess there's nothing left for you to learn here and it's time for you to step out into this world on your own.  Unless, you don't know how to share a Youtube video through your phone app to one of your chat or message apps?  Do you know how?  Do you?

I'm watching an interesting video about Mormon Language School Boot Camp. Missionaries get put into an immersion program for 6 or 9 weeks. No English.

Korean is 9 weeks.

It took the wind out of my sails when I got up and read the news this morning.  I watch his clips all the time and just yesterday sent this one to a family chat saying there is no way SNL would air this today.  Had no idea he was ill.  Sad coincidence.

It's so ironic that they spent 5 years trying to get segregation back again. What's their next target? Bathrooms? Swimming pools? Drinking fountains?

I only got Netflix because of Norm having a show that was coming out.  I thought Netflix had scooped up all of the episodes of the Norm MacDonald podcast because full episodes and longer clips were being taken down from YouTube.  I was wrong, but recently found the link to all of the full episodes.  The Netflix one was good but the full Norm MacDonald podcasts are hilarious.  Now, I can watch the full episodes of ones I only saw highlight clips of on YTube.  Even when his guests aren't that great Norm's wheels are (were) always turning.

Peter Sellers. So good!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfzXqwvtoEE

The Cato vs Clouseau battles were better than anything I've ever seen of Pay-Per-View.

The Trail of the Pink Panther had boobies! By far the worst of the bunch, but damn near remember dem tatties!!! My God, those juicy, juicy hot tattiesss!

YouTube clips. Eat shiitake mushrooms and die! I'll set the scene, my lil' stickies!
Scene: A traffic light. Clouseau's companion is a beautiful woman. Clouseau is completely smitten with her and as he's eye banging her at close range she softly says seductively "It's green."

Clouseau, caught off guard, utters "It is?"

Unfortunately, this one also hits a little too close to home for me, as I suffer from green genitals. In reality it's no laughing matter. In high school I took a water polo class and was taunted relentlessly during my showers. They said such things as "Hey look, it's green genitalia guy!" and "Greenie beanie!"
