Title: Starting to regret not getting a/c for the home
Post by: OnNut81 on July 21, 2021, 07:49:59 am
There have always been a few weeks where I wished I had a/c in my apartment but just didn't see it as a worthwhile expense.  Spend around 600,000 won for something I'd use sparingly for a couple of months a year didn't seem worth it.  Especially as you never know if renewals will happen.  But, this year is going to be tough.  It already has been.  I researched it last year with a Korean "family" member because I was going to be stuck here all summer for the first time in a long time.  He said I'd also have to pay for them to come with one of those cherry picker machines to install a rack outside my balcony for the unit, plus the installation and the unit.  I declined and it was a pretty reasonable summer, but this year "fcuk!"  We've already had three tough weeks and we may have a month more of worse heat.  Usually I'm out of here for the first few weeks of August and I miss the worst of it.  Was not here for those horrid record breaking days in 2018.  Last Sunday my gf was recovering from her second vaccine shot so I didn't get to go over to immerse myself in her central a/c so I loaded a couple of books on the ipad and struck out riding the rails for the day.  Took the subway out away from Seoul and always had a seat.  Whenever I got hungry I would head towards somewhere to pop and eat.  Visited Songdo Costco and Gimpo Lotte Mall.  Didn't get home until after nine when things had cooled a bit.  This is going to be a summer of endurance.

TLDR I think you can rent an a/c.

Yes, you can, but I was told now the price had doubled by a co-teacher.

HaHa , pretty much.  And dripping sweat at the gym just while filling your water bottle before you've started working out isn't helpful.  I'm guessing they're hindered by some covid restrictions to really upping the a/c.  Two stand alone units at one end of a big space then a couple of monster fans isn't cutting it.

Man cannot live by air con alone.  He cannot live without one.  June to Sept it's on.  But, for the next one month it will be even worse.  I bought a nice efficient Carrier one that was quiet and cost me a million won cause I'm considerate for my neighbors.  Sadly, my neighbors this year didn't return the favor.  They bought the cheapest loudest most inefficient one.  In fact for the last two years I never had any problems at all.  But lately now all of a sudden my neighbors have their cheap loud ones blasting all night making an irritating hum into my bedroom.  Hard to sleep.  Sweet f I hate a lot of Korean uninsulated sound construction!!!  The only relief will be in another week some vacay and some desk warming where (maybe) I can take some liberty at arrival time and maybe sleep most of the day during vacation (which does kind of suck).  Still, I cannot live without air con any year.  But if a Korean is actually running all night (rare for them) my accoustics will be terrible.

Buy some air circulators. Stick them in the corners of the room and leave them running all day. Get some black-out curtains for the windows.

A window A/C could be the solution.
Sure it's a bit noisy but beats feeling miserable.

How is that any good? Locked into paying monthly installments for years. You would end up paying a lot more than the price of a unit. What happens if you cancel it before the end of the term?
Also, setting up would have a separate charge.

Also get a good dehumidifier.  Not too expensive.  I got one two summers ago and it's a game-changer.

Sadly, my neighbors this year didn't return the favor.  They bought the cheapest loudest most inefficient one.
How do you know this? You've been inside their house? Like how are you able to know their A/C was A) Cheap and B) Inefficient? Did you dive through their trash?

Also, doing a favor completely unbeknownst to someone, without letting them know, and then being angry at them for not doing the same is some seriously passive-aggressive psycho boyfriend/girlfriend type shit.

Sorry, I should have offered my advice: Bite the bullet and buy the A/C. Get a cheap unit on Gmarket for like 220-250. No, they aren't deafeningly loud like hangook77 claims. Realize that his claims are 9/10 psychosomatic nonsense. Pay the 1-200 for installation. Pay the extra 25-50 bucks a month in electric and actually enjoy life in your home.

Well, how else would hear a loud buzz hum coming into my room all night?  Mine purrs very quietly.  I can barely hear mine.  SO, why would I loudly hear my neighbors from 2 floors up?  Of course some of it is the poor build of my apartment I think.  But still 2 previous summers and no issue ever till now.

I believe you are confusing malfunctioning with cheap and inefficient. What you're probably hearing is a compressor that is slowly dying. I assume the noise is coming from the condenser unit (aka the box outside the apartment with the fan)? Could you describe the noise it is making? Also, how big is their apartment?

Regardless of brand, unless you're running some serious industrial unit, any standard wall-mount or one of those standing ones should make similar amounts of noise. Whether it be Carrier or Samsung or Winnia or whatever. The difference in efficiency these days between brands, even cheap ones, is much less than 20 years ago.

If their condenser unit is making that much noise, it means they need to do maintenance on it. I mean, I guess they could have salvaged an old one and that's why it's "cheap" and "inefficient" but I think in this case the term is just "old" and possible "ill-cared for". Hopefully they'll get it fixed and there's just a delay because HVAC services are in demand right now.

Okay, so how big is your place exactly? And how are you hearing this from TWO floors up? And where is the buzzing concentrated from? Is it the condenser unit outside their apartment? Or is it coming from inside their apartment?

Because I live rent-free in their heads and I think it's fing hilarious that I do. Also, looks like I can add SPQR to that list now that he's starting to have this homoerotic obsession with me and taints.

Maybe I should come up with a musical jingle that I'll link to that will just burrow into their brains. I think it would be hilarious if these guys spent the last 20 years of their empty lives with that jingle in their head and just ranting on various internet forums. Well, 20 years for Adel and gogators!. SPQR sounds like he won't last that long given his declining attention span and "limit of 14 units" which, lets be real, if you're at the point of meticulously counting your alcohol servings, is a sign that there's been some serious problems in your past. So SPQR probably has 10 of functionality, followed by 10 of semi-coherence. Enjoy arguing with me during that time SPQR!

Well I still have ties to Korea and language education but more than anything I enjoy the comical style and banter of discussion forums such as this. Careful Marti don't get too caught up in yourself.  I guess you have a point in that you're probably not that worthy of too much attention, but in between other things I do find the forum as a whole entertaining.  Over a year of intermittent lock-downs & teaching online will do that to a bloke!

I sleep every night with the fan blowing air either directly on my face (if am hot) or against the wall by the head of the bed to get a fresh air feeling. AND the a/c is on nonstop at night in July & August.

I have been doing so for years.

But if one night I pass away, I'm sure at least one local will note the fan was on and another will nod.

Thanks for the offer.  I have a Costco membership, but I picked up an air circulator yesterday.  It seemed to do the job.  A/C would be better, but hopefully this'll do.

Guaranteed.  There could be a gas explosion, but if they dig through the rubble and find you in bed with a fan next to you, cause of death will be fan death.

Thanks for the offer.  I have a Costco membership, but I picked up an air circulator yesterday.  It seemed to do the job.  A/C would be better, but hopefully this'll do.

Yeah, NP... hope it works!

We've got four aircons running for about eight hours a day.
The electrical bill is quite eye-watering.

On Jeju I had a 2-month bill of 600,000+ won one summer.

Now, since I live in the same building as the hagwon, apparently my apartment isn't on an independent meter (the hagwon owner owns the building, even helped design its construction as its original owner); i say this because my monthly electricity bill is between 3800 and 7000 won despite heavy a/c summer use and heavy space heater use in winter. :) I feel pretty lucky now.

Damn, you could convert your apartment to a skating rink.

You're right, it could be worse. Thanks.  I only have to deal with this heat for a small part of the year.

Been running this puppy pretty much non stop for the last week. Will be too scared to look at my gas bill at the end of the quarter.

What, I miss about Korea is the floor heating and doubled glazed windows in my previous 50 pyang apartment.

Nah. That was my penthouse apt on Jeju, a massive one three times the size of my present one. And Jeju has HUMID overnight temps of 26 C... way different than you Seoul folk. I bearly made it through nights with the a/c on all night long. Plus the higher rates for electricity on the island. Hence, the absurd utility bills relative to the mainland.

These days, back on the mainland, all is good. :)
