Life is not always fair. Sometimes the best man for the job gets terminated.

Thank you President Trump for your service.

Dead Poets Society, huh? Alright...

There once was a President named Trump
On America, he unleashed a great dump
He cried foul on the election
While MAGA rioting gave him an erection
Now he's out the door like a chump

You mean the seditionists who thought they'd get a presidential pardon from their daddy dictator AND a last minute coup on January 20th at the inauguration ceremony...AND the guy desperately trying to dismiss, deflect and defend their actions aren't the gullible ones?

While a rather innocuous appearing sentence to people who can look at a sentence in French and automatically draw meaning from it, it does contain a number of words which, to an Anglophone, look suspiciously like English insults.

Squint a bit and pretend that your IQ is in the double digits, and you'll get a chuckle out of it.

False equivalence. The comments I made regarding SA domestic politics were nowhere near to the extent you did. Also, it's a false equivalence to compare Trump and whatever he was to what Julius Malema and Robert Mugabe are or were.

I'm not constantly chiming in on every political thread about South African politics.

What country are you two from? Go fix your own damn country and stop worrying about mine. I'm sure there's plenty of problems.

Anyways, now that Biden's president, who are you going to scapegoat and blame for everything? Who is going to fill the void in your life that you filled by moaning about Trump?

How did I bring it up? Someone else brought it up, it was responded to.

I simply pointed out that being in a country next to Zimbabwe and frickin Mugabe, as well as having Julius Malema being a major domestic political force, did not not make their fears wholly unreasonable.

The fact that you think White Supremacy is a major problem in America and there are White Supremacists everywhere, shows how gullible and easily brainwashed you've been. Is white supremacy a problem in terms of sporadic high-profile attacks? Sure. Is latent unconscious racism and bias or bad policies left over from days past a problem (Biden and Harris being two of the biggest culprits, NOT Trump), sure.

Anyways, you've been on here nonstop moaning about Trump. You claim he is some terrible threat to our lives, yet all you seem to do about it is cry about it on here and it's not even your country. Get a grip.

Seriously the fact that you think Trump is somehow worse than Biden and Harris, who actually took actions of substance that were far worse than anything Trump did, shows how deluded you are because you simply hate Orange Man. No reason or rationality, just pure disgust.

Yes, I actively participate in all the ongoing threads regarding SA politics.

And again, it's the constant posting about Trump. The odd comment or an occasional discussion? Whatever. More the merrier.

But him being a point of daily concern? I mean go ahead and speak, but at some point you're just using Trump as a distraction for your own life.

Canadian here but piping in on the US election/political thing anyway.

Here's my take on racism and white supremacy in the USA. As a whole it doesn't exist. The media make it seem like there's a racist under every bed and a Proud Boy in every pot. That is not true from my experience. I've been to the states many many times. I've driven from coast to coast and north to south on both coasts. I've been to 39 of the lower 48 states and in my opinion, Americans are arguably the nicest, friendliest most generous people I have ever met. Way more so than the average Canadian, who seem to have the world bamboozled that we are just so damn nice. Not true!

"The thing that's going to save Trump is that there's going to be a report, but they may suppress the report from the FBI. It could be suppressed but I know that it's already been written... they have evidence at the federal level that this siege at the Capitol was designed well before January 6th by professional provocateurs- people who are disruptive- the Antifa of the right... that just blows out the accusation that Trump planned all this."

Why not wait for the prosecution to lay out the evidence against the man (and for the defense to counter it) before passing judgement?
Whatever the outcome, I hope that the trial is fair enough to satisfy both sides of the political spectrum.

Yeah, and that Richard Jewell must have blown up the Olympics because there's a photo of him in camo and he told a friend "Atlanta's going to be a mess."

You do realize that Trump's statement is not enough to get him convicted by any court in the land? If you think that statement is incitement to riot, then you'd have to lock up pretty much everyone who has ever tweeted about every protest ever.

Speaking of Richard Jewell, fun little article

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/12/28/opinions/richard-jewell-fbi-confirmation-bias-gagliano/index.html

Quote
And now, with the recent release of the IG investigation into the origins of Crossfire Hurricane -- the FBI case into whether Trump campaign officials coordinated with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election -- it may be fair to acknowledge that confirmation bias among FBI headquarters officials may have played some role in the underpinnings of the highly scrutinized and justifiably criticized investigation.
When applying for FISA warrant renewals to continue to surveil Carter Page, FBI agents, the IG report found, used shortcuts and omitted information that Page had worked with the CIA in order to shield it from judges charged with approving the effort. "[T]he surveillance of Carter Page continued even as the FBI gathered information that weakened the assessment of probable cause," the report notes.

It seems some at the FBI had made up their minds already to continue to investigate Page, despite having new evidence on his behalf. In response to the IG's findings, FBI Director Christopher Wray directed his agency to comply with a number of corrective actions, including overhauling its surveillance warrant process.
The misdirected pursuit of Richard Jewell in 1996 should have served as a bellwether of change in how the FBI conducted sensitive investigations. Yet it may simply highlight how stubbornly resistant to change our bedrock institutions remain.
Yes, Trump-Russia was a bogus sham investigation, driven by politics. it was every bit a soft coup attempt and a sinister attempt to undermine democracy.

The fact that people are such gullible saps that they think a few yahoos storming the capital is worse than the nation's top law enforcement agency, it's intelligence apparatus, and the judiciary engaging in this kind of behavior is truly mind-boggling. Seriously, how dumb and easily duped do you have to be to not realize this?

Trump-Russia was the fictionalized narrative and gullible saps like you fell for it. These were the same people who lied you into the Iraq War and lied to you about domestic spying. Did you doubt them again? Nope, you gobbled their every word simply because you hate Orange Man. Why? BECAUSE YOU ARE GULLIBLE. And why are you gullible? Because you don't believe you are gullible, nor that you can be. You think there's no way you could ever be tricked. And they use that very arrogance against you.

Also, are you going to dispute anything in that piece? Or just wave your hands and dismiss it because it points out uncomfortable truths?

Just for the record are you arguing that Trump was not trying just about everything he possibly could to overthrow an election?
Yes, because if you think a couple hundred people running around the capital building, with only 10-25% of them engaged in violence while the rest were interested in selfies, with their ringleader being a guy carrying a mock spear and wearing a yak hat, and making a spectacle of themselves constitutes "Just about everything he possibly could to overthrow an election", THEN YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

Like seriously, how does your brain even see those things and then write that sentence? Do you have no critical thinking skills whatsoever? Do you seriously think that constituted a serious attempt to overthrow the election?

If you're just saying this stuff to troll or to browbeat with political points, fine. At least you have a chance. But if you genuinely believe this stuff, then you're just a naive, gullible fool.

Most of the evidence, like everything else with Trump, is in plain site and recorded, like the  telephone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
Yes, that is not a standard thing. Political leaders never urge local officials to put their thumbs on the scale or call things in the most favorable light to them. They are all upstanding paragons of virtue and truth.

This wasn't written by some GOP hack, it was written by CNN's own law enforcement analyst.
Nope. You've fallen for the right-wing counter-narrative and are too obstinate to recognize your error.

Let's not forget that the posters here who are doing their worst to minimize the attack on the Capitol were also saying pretty much the same things about the pandemic not that long ago. And before that about the russki interference in the 2016 election.

Let's also not forget that the trump team's efforts to collude with the russkis failed due to incompetence. Why should we expect anything different from their attempts at a coup?

Senator Rand Paul:

"Democrats claim to want to unify the country but impeaching a former president, a private citizen, is the antithesis of unity.... Hyperpartisan Democrats are about to drag our great  country down into the gutter of rancor and vitriol.... It's almost as if they have no ability to exist except in opposition to Donald Trump. Without him as their boogeyman they might have to legislate and to actually convince Americans that their policy prescriptions are the right ones. "

Still oblivious to the fact that those same pols impeaching Trump weaponized the FBI and intel community to attempt a soft coup against the President in an attempt to deligitimize him based on a lie.

The fact that you think yak hat guy is more dangerous than Clapper and Brennan shows gullible you are.

Yak hat guy wasn't in charge of anything, insofar as I've read. Just the most.... visible.... of the bunch.

In any case, I would be far more afraid of those people responsible for the stashed explosives they found in the area at around the same time as the demonstration.
The really dangerous crazies are the ones smart enough to not get caught, unfortunately.

Do people genuinely believe this was a serious coup attempt and that the government was on the verge of being eliminated/overthrown?

If I was Mike Pence, I'd be more worried about being killed by my own wife or in a helicopter crash than some MAGA hat killing me. Same for all those members of Congress. We've had, what, three serious incidents of violence against a member of Congress recently. We had Rand Paul in a neighbor dispute over landscaping. We had the capitol shooter at the softball game who shot a bunch of Republicans. And we had Gabby Giffords who was shot by a Hinckley type. We also had Paul Wellstone and Mel Carnahan die in plane crashes and John Corzine almost killed in a car accident.

The last time we had a major spate of assassinations was in the 1960s with JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X.

I think the threat is overblown and amplified by the media.

Don't forget guys, Julius Malema is the REAL danger here.
Julius Malema may end up killing no one while ranging anywhere from transformative influence to faded nothing, but he in no way warrants that level of cocksuredness that he wouldn't cause serious danger and violence because if things ever do get bad and he's around, he'll probably be at the head of some violence.

0Thankfully people who roll in red berets and fatigues and hold up flags with fists and have the actual word "Fighters" in their political party name are seldom linked to violence. Completely unwarranted and out of left field for me to suggest so. You never see those things linked together with actual violence around the world.

Trump never came close to anything resembling that kind of get up and overt paramilitarism.

The riot at the capital had many causes. I mean we've been seeing this decline in trust in our institutions for decades now and its non-partisan. The media and Congress have trust levels below 20% of the public and their reputation is earned.

Maybe, just maybe, they and we should stop and ask why no one believes them. It isn't because of QAnon.

Anyways, this story is already dying. The market is in chaos and it looks like Americans are more interested in hearings over Robinhood than Trump atm.

For those interested in how these events have been viewed outside of the US and facts rather than spin!

Yes, the proximate cause of the Civil War was the failure of the government to punish the ringleaders of the Whiskey Rebellion and Fries's Rebellion...oh wait...

Thank goodness we hanged Davis, Lee, Longstreet, Benjamin, Stephens, Breckinridge, etc. If we hadn't done that, our country would never have been unified and grown into the most powerful country on the planet Instead it would have seen another Civil War...oh wait.

Hmmm.

Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, spent two years shackled to a wall in a Virginia prison.

Alexander Stephens, the vice president of the Confederacy, was arrested and held in prison at George’s Island in Boston until October, 1865. He was released from indemnity by Andrew Johnson, a pro-slavery, anti-Black President. He was elected to the Senate, which refused to allow him to sit.

They were the leaders of the confederacy.  (Generals follow instructions of leaders, considered to be combatants, and thus are treated differently.)

Since you consider these to be stern punishments, then I assume you are in favor of a 2-year sentence for whomever you blame for all of this and attribute as the head, and then 6 months for the sidekick. And everyone else being let go.

Thank you for being reasonable. Yes, one person gets 2 years. One other person gets 6 months.

Mr. C supports Proud Boys leader getting 2 years, Proud Boys deputy 6 months, no charges for anyone else for Capitol riot. I agree with Mr. C. I think that is fair.

You don't think I, the person who rambles about the Civil War and has posted various minutae about it didn't know that? You walked right into the trap. Now you either have to agree that those are sufficient punishments OR twist yourself in knots.

Again, THINK before you post. You were so focused on the detail that you missed the big picture and what you were doing.

My impression was you thought nothing had happened to them.  Apologies.

1) Donald Trump shackled to a Virginia prison wall for 2 years (just for the Jan. 6 speech), yes please.
2) Read for understanding, Stephens was pardoned so the charges of treason (a death sentence) were dropped.
3) Davis was released on bond and fled to Canada, and like the other Confederate leaders, was pardoned by Johnson.

Yes, I agree those you mentioned should be tried for treason, not pardoned, and sentenced to death.  But I'm not a big fan of the death penalty except for rare cases, so a long imprisonment is fine by me.

Clearly what happened was equivalent to the bloodiest conflict in American history that literally split the country in two.

What happened was obviously far closer to the Civil War than the Whiskey Rebellion.

Can't find Rebellion Whiskey, but I actually like bourbon better.

"Do you miss me yet?"

Given that he lost the popular vote twice, lost the House for the Republicans in 2018 and then the Senate and Electoral College in 2020, all while being the most unpopular president since opinion polling began, I think the country's answer is pretty clearly, "No."

It is astounding to me that anyone with a such a consistent track record of losing could ever be considered anything but a disaster for their party. I mean, in 1981 Democrats weren't all over TV talking about how Jimmy Carter was "The Greatest President in My Lifetime" and should run again in 1984.

By all means, though - keep Trump as the de facto leader of the GOP. I think he's an accurate reflection of its values and a much greater asset to the opposition than to conservatives. In an attempt to frighten people about waking up one morning to find themselves in Red Dawn, right-wingers have been saying for years that Bernie Sanders and "The Squad" are the "real" face of the Democratic Party. Yet those politicians have better track records of winning than Trump does. Imagine taking someone who was more disliked, and proved incapable of winning a single popular vote, and elevating him to the most prominent position in the party. Genius strategy. Keep it up, please.
