I really don't understand why people don't just leave things that are in decent condition outside.

You're gonna got through hours and hours of posting and messaging and waiting for strangers for 80 bucks over 15 items? Just leave it outside and people will take it.

Or have an open house on Facebook with your local wayg group.

"Hey, everything in the picture is for barter. Come by and we can haggle, I'm easy, I just want it gone. I'll be home from 3-6 on Thur and Fri."

One post, no messaging dozens of people. Easy. The 10 000W you get for coat hangers is not the make-or-break hassle you need to live comfortably back home, ONE WOULD HOPE.

gotta get on that grind  :afro: 8)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, thank you for reminding me!

I bought a kilo of Colombian coffee grind in January. I weighed it just now and I have 400g left.

I paid 10 000W for it, so.............. carry the 1.................. ... market value would be 4000W.

I kept it in the freezer, sealed, so it's really fresh. So, let's say, 5500W?

Pick up only, this Thursday between 11PM and 1130PM.

Thanks!

Also, I'll even throw in a 5L Anyang City compost bag for free! (value 250W!)

Yea, the selling of half used toiletries on FB is mind boggling. my time is worth more than the few thousand won i would get for it, when you factor in the messaging back and forth and then the hand off.

ew. I don't even know or wanna what that is, but I'll compare it to a jar of peanut butter. I would not buy an open jar of PB from anyone. however, if someone I knew offered it to me I would consider taking it.

I was regularly disgusted by how low and cheapskate-like people would go.

I sold my oven and my car when I left. I donated pretty much an entire 1 bedroom furnished apartment's worth of stuff  to a local church which passed it out to the poor.

I'm always amazed at how much furniture and stuff is thrown out at my apartment building. I'm pretty sure one of the previous teachers got the furniture from the trash pile. and as much as I'd love to replace it other newer trash, I don't get there in time to see the good stuff. someone comes by with their truck and takes it. I also am not willing to gamble if it has any pesky bugs.

It's even weirder when they try to sell these used items at like-new prices, lmao. Or for more than they'd originally purchased them for in some cases... and we're not talking about rare or hard-to-find items, either. You could literally buy them in Emart. It's funny how common this is.

Unless it's a high-dollar item, I don't bother trying to sell. I either give it away or leave it on the curb, and someone always, always takes it. I'm not about to go out of my way to pocket 3k won, lol.

When I'm ready to finally leave Korea, I'm just going to do what CO2 said and have an open house, then donate or give whatever's left over away. Used toiletries and food are just getting thrown the **** out.

When I first got here in '96 we all did this.  We were the bottom feeders.
Things I should have bought new were a decent sized fridge and an
air conditioner.

Koreans throw a lot of stuff out because of the complete lack of storage
space.  Also this culture hasn't embraced the "used' or "antique" culture.
Prior to about 1960 there was no real furniture in Korea aside from
museum pieces. So everything is new and of dubious quality.

Korean furniture always cracked me up. Usually really ugly and dated looking. Like you'd go into a principal's office or walk by a small grocery store's break room and they always have these giant ugly chairs lined up to make the room look like a 1930s mafia headquarters. You guys know what I mean. Or the beds that are like a slab of marble with a mattress on top.

glad i'm not the only one that thinks this. it looks so garish and tacky. the furniture stores are ridiculously overpriced too. like, INSANE prices. i'm seeing a few modern-type furniture shops pop up in the last few years, and at decent prices too. hopefully koreans are are finally cottoning on that an ugly bed frame shouldn't need to cost 2m won

Can you imagine charging 80만 for a bookshelf?

Granted it's built better. But is it built better than a 14만 bookshelf from IKEA? Not a chance. Not for value.

I feel they're starting to like it more.  When I moved flat I used that app quite a lot, but it was madness how quickly things had been reserved / taken after being listed. Like within a minute sometimes it would be gone.

You can however set up keyword alerts for things you're interested in

In aesthetics, particularly in fashion, there's the trend of wearing something so outdated and garish that it becomes ironic and, in. a way, cool. Think of the way the 80s sweater is making a comeback, at least in the edgy Gen Z group.

With Korean furniture, it was impossible to wrap my head around how ridiculously kitch and gaudy everything was, I thought they were doing it ironically. The immaculately polished marble bed, with hideous gemstones inlayed into the sides, proudly on display in the obnoxiously over-lit department store simply looks like a well-polished turd.

I've come to realize that it's just a generational thing. In the West, you've got your old people who insist on covering every square centimetre of surface area with a doily, here, old people like gaudy, sparkly things. Kind of realized this when I went on a workshop and at the end of the grueling experience, all the teachers, Korean and ESL, were given these tacky keychains that only a 60yr old Korean man would think was cool. The Korean teachers (generally in theirs early 30s and 40s) made a show of marveling at how beautiful the keychains were. Next day, my CT joked with me that it was the ugliest thing she'd seen in her life and I'm pretty sure all the other Korean teachers thought so too.

The difference being that Korea is an aged society and old people are, for the most part, the sole decision makers. So that vulgar nouvea riche aesthetic will be around as long as they are.

A Phillips screwdriver set is like 5 bucks at the Lotte super across the street and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Most functional adults are always going to need one.

A drill I understand, but a common flat-head Phillips? C'mon.

Or near enough to it. I lived in a small town for my first teaching gig. Everyone was like a 5-10 minute walk from each other. Lots of people there only for a year. No reason to blow even just 5 bucks. Pretty much everyone hit up everyone else for something walking home/jogging/taking a smoke break/meeting up at a restaurant/etc.

I mean, I'm generally a "I'd rather buy it because I might need it again" type myself, but it was pretty much pointless for certain things.

Screwdrivers are also useful if your door decides to lock when you shut it, and keep you locked IN the room (this happened to me, something was wrong with the mechanism). Thankfully, I had my screwdrivers (and husband) in the room, and we managed to take off the doorknob and fiddle with the insides enough to get out. Never know when you're going to need those things (also useful just for bookshelves, or if the knob on the pot lid starts coming off).

Yes, this is a personal opinion. And it's also my opinion that if you take the time to make an ad for something under 5 dollars, that you're a F'ing moron.

For me, I'll give anything away if I no longer need/want it, and it's value is under $50 - $100 - though usually to friends, for strangers I'd probably reduce that to about under $20 - 30.
I even gave a friend my old ps4 when I upgraded to a pro for the release of FF7r.
I think, charging for stuff that aren't worth much is just silly, if you have a friend or something you can give it to.

There are a lot of skinflints teaching over here.  I think it has something to do with younger people coming over who perhaps have not lived on their own outside of university.  They come from their parents' home and then get put up in school housing.  It perpetuates the mindset.  Some of the cheapest moves and habits I've encountered in my post university life have come from Western ESL teachers in Korea. And in university, people were usually cheap because of necessity.  And now that they have a job and some income they want to keep every last penny.  Things or habits that have irked me over the years have been people that resent having to commute to work or purchase new clothes to maintain a dress code as if it's some unfair condition imposed upon them.  People that when it comes to them buying a round decide that they've had enough and call it a night.  And the perpetually annoying "it's only a dollar" defense for not contributing to something like a taxi ride and trying to make you look greedy for wanting them to chip in.  If "it's just a dollar" you'd have no problem coughing it up.

And to risk being offensive, but I have found this to be the case here, outside of the younger crowd the tightwads among the older set tend to be predominantly Brits and maritime Canadians.  For the Brits, I have one friend who was the exception that proved the rule.  Mates!  The austerity measures after the war are over.  Live a little. When I made a comment on a thread once about how people should just give stuff away if they're going to move, it was the Brits jumping in to defend the practice.  And to the Maritimers, you are now employed and earning an income.  Shell out sometimes.

I don't understand being cheap. But, what I find even more difficult to understand is when people are cheap to their own detriment.

I knew people in Korea who boiled in the sweltering heat and humidity all summer and froze their butts off all winter because they wouldn't spend a penny on electricity for air-con or oil for their furnace.

I'm usually ondol-less in the winter in my underwear. My apartment sucks up my neighbours heat and I get away with no bill. hehe

In the summer, though, I keep the house at 18 degrees. That shit's expensive. hahaha

I had a friend who would make our entire group of friends literally walk 15-20 minutes out of our way so that she could use the one ATM in the area that wouldn't charge her a fee for withdrawing cash. Didn't matter how many of us were in the group, didn't matter how short on time we might have been, she would abso-******-lutely never have her cash ready beforehand, and she'd drag us around with her just so that she could save 1k won.

It's one thing when you want to waste your own time. It's another thing when you want to waste everyone else's time. Either have your shit together before you meet up with anyone, or pay the ****** fee.

She did so many things like this and was also a terrible mooch. It didn't take me long to stop joining any outings that included her, lol.

Tell her to hike to the bank. Alone.

I did, multiple times, lol. But she'd badger the group, and people would go along with her. That's why I just had to stop hanging out with the group.

The Maritimes are one economically messed up place.....

Why would anyone have multiple bottles of maple syrup? FFS, how many effing pancakes and waffles are you eating? Do you have a family?

Also, why not just give this stuff away to your friends? Oh that's right, you probably don't have friends because you're the kind of guy who sells opened bottles of olive oil online.

I have 2 bottles of maple syrup. The stuff lasts a while, I rarely have pancakes too. maybe once or twice every 1 - 3 months.

Canadian here. Anything more than two is nutty.

You have one, it lasts a while. Great, Someone gets you another one, you have it. Maybe it's a lighter grade of syrup, tastes a bit different. Fine.

But, yeah, that shit lasts a while, there's no need to have bottles in your cupboard for when you run out.

The worst are people who wanna take the bus places. Now, there ARE reasons to take a bus, but not when there are 3 or 4 of you and you're going from Itaewon to Hongdae. It's the SAME price.

Some people just see the bus price and say "that's the lowest price. That one." They don't even think about a taxi ride split 4 ways being the SAME PRICE, maybe 300 or 400w each more.

I ain't taking no bus from Itaewon to Hongdae at 10pm. Hop in, you cheap f**k.

There was a guy I used to work with who used to do just that and would only get a taxi if there were three other people going too. If there were only two, he'd take the bus and save 1,000 won or whatever it was.  I also worked with 'that guy' who asks if you're getting a cab somewhere and then if he can ride along in the back (for free)  This guy also used to make sandwiches for the whole weekend when he went on a trip somewhere to avoid shelling out for restaurants. He said they used to get a bit stale by Sunday lunch time.  There was another guy who used to buy a bunch of bananas every day and eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Claiming they gave him all the vitamins he needed. Very few people ever saw inside his flat but it was rumoured after years of living in Korea, he had exactly one of every piece of cutlery and crockery, never bought a bed and still slept in a sleeping bag on the floor.

"We're going to Busan, fresh seafood!"

"We're going to Chuncheon! Fresh dakgalbi!"

"We're going to Gwangju. amazing ddeokgalbi!"

Nah, I got sandwiches.

Like, MAYBE if he was sending back every dollar to pay for his dad's chemo or something, then I could understand. But it's more likely he's cheap as f**k, statically  speaking.

As a proud Canadian, I avoid hanging out with too many Canadians.  Korea doesn't attract the most cosmopolitan Canucks for the most part (the ever present drunk Canuck claiming The Hip are the best band ever!) but there is no way a Canadian from a city where they take cabs is going to complain about the cost or cleanliness of a Korean taxi.  But, yes, there are plenty of cheap Canadians here. The kind that if you went to a mutual Korean acquaintance's wedding they would be the one asking how much people gave before working their way over to the envelope table.  And more likely than not dressing up meant a sweater, khakis and a pair of their darkest running shoes.

But, for me, I have also met enough free spending Canadians in my time here, so my vote for cheapest as a group still goes to the Brits.  You don't always need to ask the price before you order a drink.  You're in a Korean hof, not Louis Vuitton.

No cheap shots about "going Dutch" yet. *phew*

Did you know that all those negative axioms (https://www.dutchnews.nl/features/2015/01/10-english-expressions-involving-dutch/) in the English language about the Dutch are the remnants of a very long running pissing contest between the Dutch and the British, going back all the way to the Anglo-Dutch wars in the late 1600's?

Which the Dutch all basically won, by the way.   ;D

I'm from Canada and I had a Dutch girlfriend in uni. She wasn't
bad but the rest of her family were unbelievably tight. My family

I wouldn't say all Canucks are tight, but I have known a few who

People who do this sort of pathetic selling need to have their legs beaten with baseball bats. A "get your shit together" ass kicking.

To be fair to Star Wars guy, it's not so much that he's selling them, it's that he's selling them on Craigslist. Like I could understand throwing it up on Ebay because there might be some collector looking for them, but Craigslist? Though I suppose, it's sort of a freebie to do so.

I don't want to say they're all like this, some people just really need the money, even if it's just a few bucks, but all the people I've known who would be the type to post shit like this were both penny pinchers and moochers. Did all kinds of crap just to save 100 won. Never gave anything away, and everything had a price. One of them hung out with the same group of friends and I basically stopped hanging out with them because of her.

The person I'm referencing? A couple of friends volunteered to help her move apartments. She had to rent a truck to get her stuff from point A to point B. When my friends had arrived, she tried to get them to reimburse her for part of that truck rental cost. Why? Because they were going to use the truck, too. To help her move.

They did call her out on it, and she tried to argue that as friends they should be willing to help her out with the costs (basically implied that they were being cheap), but, to their credit, they refused to pay. They still ended up helping her out, though. :lipsrsealed: No idea why anyone puts up with her.

I've got soooo many stories about this person, even though I only dealt with her for a few months.

Took years of my life from me, I've never met anyone so frustrating and selfish.

@Aristocrat: I'd agree, but these friends are women who hadn't quite had enough of her bullshit at the time, lol. I actually think this moment was a wakeup call to these particular two because the worst that they'd personally experienced with her up until then was being forced to visit an atm to withdraw bills that they could break at a convenience store just so that this person could get the 300 won she was owed right that second.

I scored quite a few great deals 8-10 years ago when trading second-hand items was not really popular among locals. There was no carrot and the likes. I never really used facebook groups for trading.
I rarely used craigslist ever since I moved out of Seoul. The last time I bought something was earlier this year. Paid 80k for something and sold it for 400k a bit later.
