Title: (2010 National) Grade 3, Lesson 2 - "What's This?"
Post by: sheila on March 23, 2010, 01:33:06 pm
Here is the English lesson plan from last year.  Although the dialogues and some things are a little different, this may be helpful for some of the activities as some are similar.  Since the curriculum is a little sparse, I'm including a writing worksheet of the words from lesson 1&2.  After is a matching worksheet to print on the back.  There is a powerpoint that goes with the matching worksheet so the students can see the answers after they've had a chance to do it.  All are also available for Windows 97-2003 (except the lesson plan. It's just too big!).  Enjoy!~

Here are my 'lesson plans' / materials for this unit. Sorry the lesson plans aren't in a very good format, my school is happy for me to just have them as notes for myself.

Sorry for any duplication of materials borrowed from other people on waygook, and thanks for originally posting them!

If there's no link in the index, run a search for your book's specific vocabulary.  If that comes up empty, then you'll need to start a new thread yourself.  :)

Here's a game that works well with smallish classes and heavy vocabulary lessons:  . Hop and Say + Rocks, Paper & Scissors :

Skills focus: Speaking, vocabulary and general communication.
Requirements: A number of vocabulary cards to line up on the floor.
How to play:
Hop and say is a pretty easy game to play. The teacher brings a number of flash cards to class and lines the cards up across the floor in a row. Two teams stand at the extremes of the row. When the teacher orders the game to start, the first student from each team starts to jump on the first card. Every time a student jumps on a card s/he says what is on the card-For higher levels ask them to make a sentence with the word on the cards. Eventually s/he will meet the other team player somewhere on the row. When the two team players meet, they have to do the old guessing game of ROCK, PAPER & SCISSORS . The student who looses the Rock, paper & scissors game of chance, leaves the row and goes to the back of his or her team’s line up. Another player in his/her team restarts the game for their team. It should be such that the next team mate in the line up should be ready to start immediately when s/he realizes that their team player has lost the stone paper scissors guessing part. The idea is not to let the other team player get to the end of the row. If the other team player gets to the end of the row, his / her team wins.

1.___ Hopping to meet __2. Rocks, Paper, Scissors __3. Going to the end of the line

Another teacher at my school designed this template.  It's not mine but I'm sharing it on her behalf.  This has been formatted for the 3rd grade lime green book, but you can modify the template according to your desired level or grade specifications.  This particular template is for Grade 3 Lesson 2.
Cheers!

Hey here's a story for the end of "what's this?". My co-teacher and I don't really like the books stories because they tend not to make that much sense. So we make our own- using the target vocab and others that they know.  I 'borrowed' the pics from the British council site and heavily edited the story so that it's very basic. My ppt skills are weak (verging on nonexistent) so please feel free to make it better.
I read the ppt 1st with my co-teacher (doing the different voices), then split the class into parts (one group being the princess, one the monster etc) and I read the narration while they read their parts. Then we use the dialogue and have them prepare a role play in groups of 4/5.

Here is a 2 pg. handout worksheet which focuses on "What's this" vocabulary and also stresses that a noun is a person, place, or thing (some of the graphics were taken from a "Lesson Two Worksheet" posted here. (You'll need a font to print the worksheet, which is attached here.) I use the grammar rock 'Noun" video when handing this out.  There is a Powerpoint to go with the worksheet and another PPT for oral practices which focuses on the vowel theme (which was used in the first lesson with the Alice in Wonderland clip of the caterpillar "Who are you?" and contrasts w/the "What is this?").

There's more where that came from ... here's a list of Gogo's Adventures video links in order: -> http://teachinchuncheon.blogspot.com/2010/09/video-links-gogos-adventures-with.html

My blog is a bit out-of-date, but this link should be helpful in finding things to replace the curriculum.

To further contribute, here is a scanned copy of a boardgame - it's a little faint, but if you have an image editor to make it brighter, it might work.

Post by: Seoulteacher on April 05, 2011, 01:20:09 pm
I did this as a warm-up activity and the kids really loved it. I gave students at random different objects that they didn't already have: markers, pens, whiteboard erasers, cd, etc., and had them lift up the item as it was sung on the video.  ;D I also followed it with the "What's this?" ppt and "Chase the Vocab" ppt which were both a hit. Thanks so much, everyone!

I teach at an elementary school in Gwangju (3rd, 4th and 5th grade). My students are at an extraordinarily high level (80% go to hagwons 3 times a week or more), so the textbook is too low for them, and the school asked me to ratchet up the rigor in my lesson plans.

Last year during a club class I realized how much students love “would you rather” exercises because most of their day is spent memorizing/ regurgitation information as opposed to being creative. Whether you classroom is high-level or not, I have implemented an activity called “would you want?”, in which every week I present students with 5 slides asking them if they would want one of two items, both of which are relevant to or included in the weekly vocabulary. The students have 1 minute to think and discuss with a friend, then I ask for volunteers or call numbers to see who will answer the question (I usually choose three students a slide).  I always make sure to write the sentence frame “I would want ______ because _____.” So that students called on will have something to rely on/ something with which to practice their reading skills, and the 1 minute talk time holds students accountable without stressing them out.

Long story short- this activity gets students talking! Try it out if you have time in your classroom today!

My students responded really well to a lot of the powerpoint games posted in this thread, particularly the Sponge Bob game and anything containing animals. This thread has been reall y helpful for ideas to teach this topic, and it's a great way to introduce students to a lot of new English vocab. It's also good spelling practice for the older students i.e. you can ask them, "What's this?" They need to say the word, and then spell it correctly (i.e. animal/fruit vocab).

I did a simple intro using a magic hat we had lying around the English Centre.  I placed various things in the hat (one at a time) and asked the kids to come up and pretend to be a magician.  The had to stick their hand in and ask 'Is this a ____'.

If they're correct I award points to the relevant team.  If not, then I just ask an opposing team member to come up until they get it correct.  Was good fun... good warm-up.

Surprisingly, out of all the Gr3 books listed, I didn't find my book among the throng, but I'll post a few, "What's This?" ppts, anyway. You can always change the vocabulary & pics as needed. Also, the spelling practice powerpoint was initially made with Microsoft 2011 and that doesn't transfer well to the older versions so the letters may be funky. Feel free to change the fonts.
