Title: China vows retaliation for Houston consulate closure
Post by: T_Rex on July 23, 2020, 06:57:43 am
Quote
State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, who is traveling with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Europe, confirmed the move, saying, "We have directed the closure of PRC Consulate General Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and American's private information."

Pompeo addressed the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston with reporters Wednesday.

"We're setting out clear expectations for how the Chinese Communist Party is going to behave, and when they don't, we're going to take actions to protect the American people, protect our security, our national security, and also protect our economy and jobs," he said.

Alluding to the reasoning behind the sudden order, Ortagus said, "The United States will not tolerate the PRC's violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our people, just as we have not tolerated the PRC's unfair trade practices, theft of American jobs, and other egregious behavior. President Trump insists on fairness and reciprocity in U.S.-China relations."

This is unusual. China could retaliate by closing a US consulate.

It'd be worth it even if they do. Countries need to stop cutting ties with China as is, just look at what they're doing in Africa.

This is China's Achilles heel and they know it. If you're an authoritarian dictatorship, the only real way you stay in power is to brainwash your people. Before brainwashing, you must beat critical thinking and creativity out and the Chinese education does this. Now you've got a loyal zealot.

Problem is, with critical thinking and reasoning gone, the zealot is REALLY going to struggle when it comes to innovation or creativity. This forces China to steal technology and reverse engineer it. This keeps China going as long as they can maintain this strategy.

Kick them out!

That's why they send tons of students overseas to study. Sure they lose a bunch to the wonders of freedom, but a bunch still come back to the bosom of mother China.

And traditionally a reason the US is so open about accepting international students. They are hoping some will go back and spread American ideals, and become staunch allies of the US.

http://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/goldstein-china-secretly-hoarded-global-pandemic-supplies-according-to-report

As the USA hopes Chinese nationals who get educated there return to China with the hope of w new free world, many Chinese remain in countries and act as nothing less than surrogate spies for the homeland.

Look at what happened in Canada regarding precious and limited supplies after China knew about the virus but had yet to inform the world.

The typical Chinese person, regardless of where they live, are as brainwashed and supplicant as the most dedicated party member serving Xi's every whim.

That... feels like a hell of a long shot. I'd imagine that the ones who embrace American ideals wouldn't want to return to China.

Maybe China will retaliate by closing down some of our factories.  Boo hoo.  Until Trump came along, China got to do whatever it pleased.

I wouldn't say that.

Chinese students who're able to study in the West almost never come from Chinese government schools, they're the rich and privileged spawn of CCP officials. Their live have been nothing but gravy, Gucci and garish since the day they were born. To them, they're rich because of the CCP and many Chinese simply join the CCP to get ahead.

The CCP is mainly comprised of sycophants and liars; they don't serve Xi or the party, they serve themselves. Regarding Chinese students in the West, remember that the main purpose of the Confucius Institute is to manage a spy network, where every Chinese student is being watched by another Chinese student. Nien Cheng's 'Life and Death in Shanghai' illustrates this exact modus operandi, during and after the Cultural Devolution, where everyone was spying on everyone else and snitching was rewarded. These students all have families back in China, the CCP makes sure of this.

They're acting like nationalist hooligans in Western universities because other Chinese students are watching them and this kind of behavior is rewarded, anything less is looked at with suspicion.

The good news is that liars and sycophants have no loyalty and will sell anyone out for the right price.

Countless dictators of past were educated in the USA (or some other western country), and supported by Uncle Sam (and the west). Rhee Seung-Man being one example. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Iran, Swiss educated.

What's up with all the paper burning at the Chinese consulate in Houston? Out in the open? In trash cans? Appears they aren't even trying to hide that they've been up to no good.

One of the guys I played Starcraft with back in the day was like that. Chill dude. Mostly stuck to games, food runs, basketball, and his similarly low-key 5.5/10 girlfriend.

I read that (Swiss educated) Kim Jong-un was similarly remembered by his classmates. Just kind of a chill guy, liked basketball. Seemed cool :lipsrsealed:

Yeah, I'm not here to defend dictators, but to think that they constantly barricade themselves in a War Room and wring their hands, lick their lips and proclaim, "How can I cause the most bloodshed and torture on unsuspecting and innocent people, hehehehe" is a bit ridiculous. haha

I'm sure that if you were sent to the future and told to have a beer with 10 random  people, 2 of which were dictators, you probably couldn't identify them outright if you were just having normal bar talk.

;D So, what do you do for fun?

 I like to enslave and torture ethnic minorities! mwahahahahahahaha

Though it’s fun to think of him acting that way at school but without the backing of a military regime to carry out his orders. Everyone just being like, “The f**k is this dude?” when he ineffectually orders someone executed for taking the last cheese stick ahead of him in the lunch line.

Aw, cute little chubby dictator-to-be :-*

Could be sensitive documents and pretty much all nations spy, to a tolerable degree.

Of course all nations spy. What do you think embassies are? Nice places to help out their nationals abroad? My thing was they were burning all this stuff outside in a trash can. Most embassies would have a dual shredder and an incinerator.

In the end it doesn't matter, the guys doing the burning probably have immunity. And I guess they need to vacate the place fast. No point worrying about optics since China's rep isn't exactly good right now.

Western countries: "Chinese people keep stealing intellectual property and committing espionage."
China: "That's racist, you can't say that, you're lying!"
Western countries: "We have on-camera proof of you stealing intellectual property and committing espionage. Here, take a look."
China: "Uh...BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GULF OF TONKIN?"

Never change, China.

The typical Chinese person, regardless of where they live, are as brainwashed and supplicant as the most dedicated party member serving Xi's every whim.

The vast majority of Chinese emigrants are people who fled China to avoid poverty, famine, death, etc. I can't imagine most of them are fans of the Chinese government.

However there is a new wave of Chinese emigrants who are rich and connected to the CCP. Their families make money in China from their CCP connections, then they send their kids abroad to go to Western universities and buy property. Some of this is to park their money overseas so it can't be seized by the CCP if they ever become persona non grata, but this new wealthy emigrant class also strongly supports the Chinese government. I know that in Australia the CCP actively keeps these people in line and gets them to recruit other Chinese people, I'm not sure about other Western countries though. I don't really know what the long-term plan is of this class of emigrants though other than "buy a bunch of houses." If they refuse to integrate into their host countries they and their children will never be accepted. The first wave of emigrants probably doesn't care because they don't really interact with locals and they think they can just go back to China if they needed to, but their children will probably eventually resent being expected to be tools of the CCP.

The closing of the Houston consulate was fully justified. It's been under investigation for years. Trump should have pulled the trigger two years ago. Maybe he was too busy trying to get Xi's help.

Pretty sure the incinerators were already in use for the bodies of untrusted employees.
