Title: What are you doing during these strange virus times?
Post by: Ronnie Omelettes on March 21, 2020, 10:53:05 am
As it sounds really.  Obviously everyone here is having different experiences with lockdowns/working from home/going to an empty school or something like that so you've got to fill your time.  Are you learning something new?  Are you finding out something new?  Have you found something that will help you connect with family or friends to help with the isolation.  Anything really.

At the moment, my siblings and I are worried about our parents.  My mum is okay, but my dad is struggling, he gets depressed and as he should limit his going out (he lives in Manchester) it means he stays in a lot.  When he came over at Christmas, we played a lot of Cribbage, which is a card game we, in my family, have played a lot and really like.  Now I've found this website https://my.ecribbage.com/ where we can actually play online together.  We call up each other on whatsapp, as it's free, and so we can talk and play at the same time.  Kills a good hour or two and really helps him.

"Fifteen two, fifteen four".... 15 is for two points, never 1.

I taught my students cribbage in January on a winter vacation Game Day. I have a "Game Day" every 5-8 weeks. It really is a skill learning exercise that takes a lot of listening skill. I never play the same game in future classes, because they've already learned it, and the point was to learn thru English, not just play the game.

This month of unemployment? I play a card game online: Hearts. Against others live. Hearts.vex.net

Yeah, my grandmother also taught me it. I played it a lot when visiting my aunt in elementary school. My dad taught me poker games but after he retired he too played it with me, hence my memory.

We were notified to work from home starting this past Monday.  The initial time given to us was 3 weeks.  This may be extended pending circumstances.

No impact on salary.  I am still required to perform my taskings and report to my CoC on my progress.

The benefits of this are I can sleep in, work out when I want outside and take breaks without interruptions.  The WFH directive has been fantastic.

Yeah really weird times.  If anything, it's really opened my eyes to how much teaching isn't the job for me, or at least teaching in the EPIK public school environment anyway.

Sad to admit it but the past few weeks at school have been like heaven for me.  No anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach on a Sunday night, no stressing about material or worrying about what I'm going to teach.  All I have to do is go to school, make a flask of coffee and veg out in the office all day, alone.  Watching Youtube, browsing the internet, reading books, playing my Switch.  It's pathetic really, but I'd rather be doing this than teach a class.

Obviously I should be studying Korean, learning to code, watching TED talks, "levelling up", "hustling", getting a Masters probably but all of that has sort of fallen by the wayside as I realise that I have no motivation to do anything here.

Also I have to mention, I'm embarassed and ashamed that I'm getting paid to do nothing because a lot of people aren't.  That doesn't make me feel good at all.

if it's any consolation, i hated teaching with EPIK too. too many kids, all different levels, shit textbooks, unprofessional environment. you gonna stay another year alex or?

I really don't know because realistically, there's not a lot else I can do here.  I might just do a shot in the dark application for the British Council (I have had a couple of job alerts recently from them) at the end of this year with a view to trying to get in for March 2021.  If that goes nowhere then I'll probably go home for a nice long rest.  I feel like I should at least give teaching one more shot in another environment to see how I really feel about it.  I can't trust my feelings about teaching if that makes sense because like you say, the public school environment is so ridiculous.

Incidentally I was looking back through some old emails to friends back home and even in 2017 I was saying how down I felt about the job, working environment etc.  Still here three years later haha.

I feel you, Alex. I'm similarly disillusioned with the whole EPIK deal. My last two years at middle school have brought me to the brink of sanity more times than I can remember. I'll be moving to a new school next month, hopefully things will look up.

And since we're all sharing long-term plans... I'm thinking of moving my family (Korean wife and child) to South Africa for a year, after this next contract, so I can get my PGCE. Then start looking for an international school, possibly in the Middle East.

Do it. I've heard the young learners centre is often on the look out for good teachers. You might start to like teaching in a good environment. Korean public schools can smd. Glad I got out of working there

I heard from someone who had an interview with the BC in Korea last week that it was canceled.  I don't know if they're still hiring in other countries.  The teacher centre and exams part of the organisation (the ones that make the money) are going to suffer massively from this, although I did see an advert for IELTS examiners last week, so they're staying optimistic.

I'm definitely wondering how all of this is going to affect things for me moving forward. Like some of you, teaching here has just about ruined teaching for me, so I intend to go back home and retrain for a new career at the end of this school year.

I very nearly didn't even renew at the end of last year, but I didn't decide I wanted to leave until it was too close to the end of the school year to be charging off into unemployment without a plan. Now I've at least got this year to try to get my ducks in a row before leaving.

I have a lot of friends making decent money in various corners of the IT world, so I was thinking about getting a CompSci degree and some certs to try to get my foot in that door. I have no idea how this global crisis is going to affect the job market (or which aspects of it will be the hardest hit), though, which could have an impact on both my willingness to walk away from a paying job and the new career I'll choose have a go at.

I'm still walking around a lot, but I'm choosing to go on my walks and hikes in more isolated areas now. Thanks to all of my exploring over the years, I know a lot of off-the-beaten-path places that most people don't know anything about, so there's that. My gym is still open, and I've continued to go, but I've been waiting until, like, 1 in the morning, lol. I'm either alone at that time or there's maybe one or two other folks. I've been sanitizing my hands after using every machine, too.

I've been catching up on my backlog of movies that I've collected, knocking those out for when I'm taking a break from school stuff. FYI for those who don't know, yet: Disney has early-released its movie "Onward" today for people to enjoy during the quarantine.

And I've been keeping closer tabs on family, making sure they're alright and that their jobs are safe back home. A couple of them are at risk of being laid off because of this virus, so I've been walking them through creating backup plans in case that happens. Lot of anxiety there, but now that they know what they should do and who they should call in the worst case scenario, they feel better. There's been a lot of stress over people panic-buying, too, a lot of people aren't able to get the food and supplies that they need because others keep crowding the stores to clear out the shelves faster than stores can restock. According to my brother, Black Friday like lines have been forming outside of stores even at 3AM in his town. He's had to travel to rinky-dink towns out in the middle of the nowhere just for the basics. And now all of the gyms have closed in his area, which is a big deal for him (working out is a major source of stress-relief for him). Of course he can still do at home workouts, but he's going to lose some gains without being able to go heavy, so I've been a listening ear for him to voice that frustration, lol.

I've been checking in on some friends living in Europe, too. Relatively calm in some areas, lots of fear in others, different levels of asinine panic-buying there as well.

I've been tempted to try my hand at playing LoL, but I'm kind of afraid that the servers are being overloaded at this time, haha.

Went to the grocery store at 10 am, was very quiet, just 10 people around or so. So, no panic buying whatsoever.

Well my last job ended at the end of Feb. I moved cities to right outside Seoul and as expected because of the virus and such there are no new decent jobs around.

I just did lazy stuff at home for the  first while, spending a few hrs a day looking at job sites ect. Seems the same shit jobs posted over and over.

So the last 2 weeks I have started to be more productive. Spending 4-6 hrs a day on programming learning and building my own site. 1-2 hrs on Korean learning. A bunch of time cooking and trying out making meals that take more prep that I wouldn't have time for. Also doing some baking and making my own loafs and breads. Gonna make my own pizza this week with my own dough then some naan bread and hummus. Evenings I watch youtube/shows/play TFT (Riot (LoL) game). Keeps me busy enough....

I've been "teaching" from home but mainly that involves recording audio to my PowerPoint slides and giving more self-guided assignments, and all the prep and admin end up getting stretched out through the whole day, so I feel like I'm putting in more hours than I would if I were actually on campus. Need to get better disciplined about strict working hours.

Other than that, trying to do a 30-day yoga program (with moderate success so far) and, at the very least, make a modest dent in the unread books on my shelf. Problem is, any time I get a break and start reading, I fall asleep on the sofa or get distracted by coronavirus updates. I had high hopes for studying Korean and finishing a research paper but so far those have remained completely dormant.

Also, I'm posting on here a lot more than I would otherwise. Need to replace my time on here with books.

Realising that my daily walking is kind of limited with its range and that I shouldn't really be mountain hiking and walking around yesterday seeing so many people riding around on bikes, I bought a bike.  I was umming and ahhing for a bit and then thought I'd jump in.  So went to the bike shop and got a mountain bike and helmet for 250 000 won.  They threw in a padlock and lights for free.  Thing is, the two people in front of me bought bikes, so including me, they must have sold three bikes in about 20 minutes.  Roaring trade.  Then went out for a small ride at 3pm and came back at 6pm.  Got carried away.  My bum hurts today.  But so lovely getting out into the countryside bits around my apartment.

Need to get better disciplined about strict working hours.

That's the difficult thing as when you're at home, you have your sofa and bed, and after a bit of working you think 'oh, I'll just have a little lie down'.  If I'm studying I need to be in a classroom or in a library.  That's how I do it best.  My bro in Germany is working from home, but he's in contact with others and having phone conferences and there is  a lot of work he can do remotely.  Which would make it easier.  I can do a little bit like lesson planning for my night classes, and seat plans for students, and other bits and pieces.  But it's not really necessary, and I don't think the school expects teachers to really be 'working from home', as my VP told me to take it easy.   :undecided:

Neither do I, but let me tell you, there's gonna be some *epic* TPing happening next Halloween!

As for me, I'm doing a lot of hiking: a new trail every day! Really helps that I live in an area with tonnes of great trails, parks, rivers, and mountains. Yay for living in the boonies, I guess.
Also doing a lot of reading. Being pressured to try out audibles: convenient for when I'm running or hiking, but for some reason the voices from my phone never sound as good as the ones in my head.
And cooking! By the time corvid finally dies, I'll either be a gourmet chef, or a hopeless wino (because what fun is cooking without a glass of vin?).

Yep.  I imagine it's more difficult (unless you have a car) if you live in the city to navigate around to get out into the countryside without fear of spreading things.  Having the countryside outside your front door is a definite bonus.  :-*

On the negative side, I wanted to go out for a cycle yesterday, after my enjoyable, frivolous cycling on Sunday, but I already had a puncture and no way to fix it.

But so uncomfortable. Easier to get something called slime, a liquid you squirt through the valve into the tube and should you get a puncture it seals it immediately.

Fixing a puncture is pretty basic too, any cycle shop sells the necessary, so always carry a repair kit and a set of tyre levers with you.

What are you guys doing these days - not leaving your house, going out to cafes and restaurants as usual or something in between?

I feel like I've been lulled into a false sense of security because everything feels so strangely "normal".  Coffee shops and restaurants look like they're back to business as usual when you look in the window, streets are far from deserted etc.  If I weren't so ugly I'd swear the guy behind me at the checkout in Homeplus was coming on to me he was standing so close.  Social distancing??  I've just watched six teachers huddle around a tiny table in the office sharing fruit from one plate.

It feel like the cautious time has completely passed now but I'm still worried haha.

There is also no point in keeping schools closed since you see entire families out and about, shopping, eating out and such. There are some families or more like mothers that take it more seriously and they wouldn't want to send their kids to school until there are no new infections in the country. This minority of parents still amounts to hundreds of thousands and that is a large enough number to pressure the authorities into further delaying the start of the semester. But again, at the same time, over 60-70% of the population is living life like nothing happenned. So keeping students at home will not make a real difference.

Had to go to the hospital to get my medical certificate and got in an argument with the ajjushi checking tempratures at the entrance. He only wiped down the thermometer after I asked him to
and the wipe he was using was a torn off piece of tissue you buy at the convenience store; it wasn't an ethanol swab and he was using THE SAME little piece of tissue for EVERYONE.

At the track, I saw a bunch of guys in firefighter uniforms, though they looked too old and fat to really do the job of a firefighter, having a picnic and sharing food from the same plate.

Kids and people are walking around, in large groups and no masks, sitting in coffee shops and just enjoying this period as if it were a holiday.

I'll never forget the phrase an expat skier used to describe Korea in a 2005 ski magazine, "Korea, the land of almost right".

I get the point, but given that we're in the middle to end of the biggest outbreak in a century, and Korea is being almost universally praised while western countries are in complete chaos, isn't it time we be a tad less judgmental? I mean, they aren't the ones hoarding TP, completely shuttering businesses, drinking beer from ass cracks and filling up ice rinks with bodies.

Exactly where, in my post, did I compare Korea to the West in any way, shape or form? I'm actively trying to avoid degrading this to a vulgar "us vs. them" competition that the world is hell-bent on engaging in these days. it's called "whataboutism" and it doesn't help anyone.
I criticise what I see around me and at present, I find myself in Korea. If I were in South Africa, I'd be criticising the government sucking up to the CCP and waiting till the 11th hour to actually take drastic measures.

Korea is adopting a far more effective approach than many countries, but there are still plenty of cracks in it's approach (lack of enforcement, half-arsed measures on the ground, etc.) and when dealing with a highly contagious virus, you either handle it 100% correctly or you don't, there's no middle ground so I repeat the phrase, "Korea, the land of almost right".

We were asked to work from home for three weeks (and will be extended into June).  I've been performing a program evaluation and needs assessment for two different programs.  I update my progress on the google classrooms and have been doing interviews over the phone.

It has been far more productive than being in the office.

Yesterday we received a directive from the LCdr telling us we were not going to be traveling for conferences and would remain at home until the middle of June.  All work will be done online and any learning through email and DL.

We are not restricted to move around, we answer a health questionnaire online every morning and make sure we keep in contact with others during the day during our work.  I do what I need to do during the day, but I have to get my work completed and on time.  Any shortcomings are noted in the limitations/restrictions in my reports.

Because we're trying to quash a pandemic, we should be more laissez-faire in regard to the behavior of (potentially infected) people?

Everyone has praised the response of the Korean government. If irresponsible citizens undo all of that good work, where will you lay the blame? At the feet of judgmental foreigners who were arguing for Koreans to exercise more caution and take better care of each other?

Ah, yes. The sparkling Korean countryside.
Well, I mean, it *is* early spring. It'll look a lot better in a month or two when everything greens: heck, even right now, only a week latter, all those dead looking trees have turned into fluffy pink clouds.

I agree it doesn't really compare to the countryside I grew up in, but is sure beats living at some scuzzy back alley neighbourhood in Seoul or Busan!

Re-watching Father Ted lead to YouTube suggesting a show called UK Border Force which was thoroughly enjoyable. Watching people claim they have nothing to declare at the airport then turn out to have two suitcases full of nothing but smokes was great fun.  That in turn lead to suggestions of my new favourite show on YouTube, Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlords.  It's addictive.  Something about watching British trailer trash for a change.  I feel like I'm back living in Patong with some of these characters.

Haha, I rewatched Father Ted last week too after watching all of Black Books the previous week.  I've not seen Father Ted for years and forgot just how fukcing funny it was.  I always remember in interviews they felt sorry for Frank Kelly who plays Father Jack because he is a classically trained actor from stage and screen and all he does is shout 'feck off' 'drink' 'gals', but boy does he do it well.  The episode on the plane is the best.  And I also watched all of Green Wing too.

I also realise how much I miss football too.  Just waking up and during breakfast checking the Guardian for the football news that happened when I was asleep.  You don't realise how much you miss it when it's gone and it is so much of your daily routine.  As a huge Arsenal fan, I've enjoyed going back and watching the 90s/2000s Arsenal games.  What an era for the Gunners.

Yeh, but then we have the World Cup or the Euros to look forward too. Or the daily nonsense transfer speculation.  Or cricket even.  There being zero sports is very disorientating.  But I think they have to finish this year's PL whenever it's safe to do, and then decide something about next season.  Liverpool really deserve to be champs, and I can say that now as they've lost a game  ;D :azn: so I don't care anymore.  Arsenal's invincibles season will never be matched.   :-*

It's all fun and games until I get an episode with Jermaine Jenas  >:(  Can't stand him!

Thing is with Jenas he never was very good.  I kind of want my pundits to have done something as it shows they have that players mentality.  Same goes with waankers like Robbie Savage.  I don't care if he gives footballing cliches, just tell me something interesting.

This video shows why Jenas is not in the same class as Ferdinand or Keown when they're talking about derbies.

Lighten up, man. You been stuck inside for a while? Everything is relative and Korea is a small country. Those photos looked pretty nice to me.  Nothing bad about walking along a river in sunny spring weather with some apartments in the distance.  I've been hiking my local mountain a lot in the evenings.  I take a flashlight to be safe but there are apartments in the distance along most stretches but it's still very relaxing when there are so few people.

This is true. They also sprayed where I work last weekend. I'm not convinced it does any good. From what I understand the virus doesn't do well in the tropics and it can't live on surfaces for days. So, they go in on Friday after work and spray and we go back Monday morning. I think the virus, if it existed would be dead by then, no?

Nonetheless, I stay home after work and on weekends. I have a nice yard to hang out in and a ton of books to read. I bought a freezer and spent $500 or so filling it and the cupboards so we have lots of food. I can ride this thing out easy.

I spent the first 3 weeks making lessons and ppts.  The last week, I have been watching TV shows I had downloaded but never got around to watching.  March seasonal change brings about some nasty allergies until cherry blossoms get here.  So, can't get outside to the countryside biking or hiking too much.  But from now on, I will get out like that poster who took those awesome pics.

Well, it's May 1st, my birthday. I'll teach 3-8 pm, then, since it's my first payday since February, I'll blow a few bucks on indulgences (swiss chocolate, gin, that jalepeno pizza place a few blocks away).

Then 4 days off, so...

My first trip outside this town of 50,000 since my January shopping trip to Daegu.

I was gonna go south coast to Sangju beach on Namhae island but 21 c isn't as appealing as the 28 c forecast for Pohang on the east coast. Either is a 2-hour drive away. I'll be keeping social distance as i'll transport in my own vehicle with my two 6-year-old Angora cats. It'll be their first trip to the beach. (Their first few years we were on Jeju but I never had taken them to the beach.)

I have no intention of visiting a big city this year and am not taking any buses. I cannot fathom the subway during these viral times. Ugh.

Thought I'd post this here as it seems the most apt, as during these virus times I've been enjoying walking sooooo much when the air is good.  There is the mountain behind my apartment which I walk a lot and it's been great, both health wise and for my mental health.  So it got me musing as I see a lot of nature stuff every day there about what animals and insects I've seen here In Korea that I've never seen before in other countries.

Chipmunks - Suppose that's a weird one.  But never seen a chipmunk before I came to Korea.  Saw a couple of baby ones yesterday, running around.  Well cute.
Murder hornet - As it's called in Japan.  But it's the largest hornet in the world and can grow up to 4.5cms.  That one I saw was a monster.
Fireflies - These were very cool.  About 5 years ago, just at the foot of a mountain near my old apartment, if I had a very keen eye I would see fireflies in September/October.  Really cool.
Mountain boar - After the typhoon last November, I think it was, I went for a walk in the evening and saw a boar and her baby about 100 meters away.
Cicadas - A mainstay insect in the summer.  Their life-cycle is very interesting.

There are a lot of butterflies obviously, but the one that always catches my eye is the big black one. I want to say it's this one 'Red Helen' - Papilio Helenus, but not sure.

(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/da/Red_Helen_%28Papilio_helenus%29_at_Samsing%2C_Duars%2C_WB_W_IMG_6219.jpg/220px-Red_Helen_%28Papilio_helenus%29_at_Samsing%2C_Duars%2C_WB_W_IMG_6219.jpg)

Just for the size of it.

Talking of chipmunks.  I went for a walk today after the sudden typhoon-type wind and rain cleared the air, and as usual, I didn't take my camera.  And that's always when things happen up the 'mountain'.  First, I had a game of 'I'm not moving, so you can't see me' with a deer.  Because the deer near my apartment absolutely leg it at the first sight of a person.  So I stood there about 50 metres away, while it checked me out for a couple of minutes.  Then, further along, I saw a baby chipmunk, who legged it up a tree.  I saw it about ten or so metres up and then it just jumped out of the tree onto the path and landed with a squeak and then ran off.   That was a hefty jump.  Then further down, there is this one small bird that hangs around this area, and when it sings it wags its tail.  When I talked with my mum she thought wagtails do that to mark out their territory.  I'd always thought it was a mating thing.  But if I'd had my camera I could have snapped it for identification.

All the fun of having nature 5 minutes from your door.  Next time, bring the camera dipshit.

-resting
-catching up with family
-on the public doll, receiving twice my salary in Korea (I did not think I would qualify for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.  I certainly don't qualify for normal state unemployment I am, in fact, considered a gig worker and was forced to return home.  I am definitely grateful but I don't wish to be on the public doll for long)
-working out
-eating good food, BBQ's four times a week
-enjoying nice weather
-drinking good beer
-once in a while taking advantage of what is otherwise, highly illegal in Korea
-saving my money
-trying to get enrolled in an online M.S./M.A.
-considering doing the online CELTA (yes, that is real)

Now that I am seeing more and more salary offerings in Korea starting at 2.0 a month (before deductions), I think I have had my fill with with it.  I very well may just pack my bags, collect the $$$ I saved, pick my spot and head to Thailand (once the government allows incoming passengers again).  I may as well...the wage gap between Korea and Thailand seems to be closing.  Besides, in Thailand, I only have to worry about 20 classes a week, can work another job if I want, will be able to have a very nice apartment, etc.

It just seems to be a better choice.

Think I'll stick to these thread as I suppose it's the right one.  Even though I've always loved naturey things, getting out and taking walks a lot has really tweaked my interest in the things i see out and about.

Last weekend, I saw this little fellow, not particularly big but as a Mamushi, quite venomous.

And another one of my chili dragonflies...

On my walk on Saturday, I hear this beautiful bird but have never seen it.  It has about 50 different songs and I waited to get a snap of it so I could identify it.  It's called a black-naped oriole.

(https://i.imgur.com/AzaK1W0.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/yZNJc2a.jpg)

Actually, looking at the pictures, the first has a dragonfly next to him and in the other picture he seems to be eating it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdySZLk4Mx0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdySZLk4Mx0)

It's the kind of bird I remember hearing on 'Neighbours' when they cut to the street scenes on Ramsey Street.

amazing pic of the dragonfly!! I just love them. I found a swarm of gold ones the other morning.
I have seen that bird once too. I saw a wild pheasant at a park a few weeks ago. that was wild! Any chance you know what bird the sort of cerulean blue/gray ones are? the females are just gray, maybe the size of an american robin? they might have black on their face. I haven't seen one recently, just hear them at home often.  I have tried looking it up but have had no luck. 2 were feeding babies in a tree next to my window. it was awesome!

Is it this one?  An Azure-winged Magpie? (not my picture)

I saw a pheasant too..  But too far away to get a decent shot.  Knowing how they always fly off making a ton of noise, I think if they flew away quietly and with less kerfuffle, then maybe they wouldn't get killed.   :undecided:

And this dragonfly too on Saturday.  Looks a bit raggedy.

Sometimes, for our family zoom chats we have a photo challenge.  But when it comes to a nature photo challenge, my family say it isn't really fair.  Their British snails and cows against my dragonflies and snakes.   ;D

OMG yes! that is the one! I used to be good at finding stuff on the interwebs but now it's just so full of junk. lol
the pheasant I saw did fly away quietly. I almost didn't believe i saw it.
I have not seen a snake yet, thank goodness. I appreciate them but don't need to encounter one. I'm too busy making sure I don't walk into a spider web.

 ;D

Usually, I grab a stick of bamboo or something light at the start of my walk and hold it like a light-saber in front of me to catch those spider webs that are across the path!     Too many times have I got a face full of web and spider.     It means I can enjoy the walk, although these days with the rain, I have to look down so I don't step on the frogs in the path.

This dude was cool enough to let me snap him...  I've seen him all week, he doesn't do much, so I call him 'Alan Parkinson' when I see him.

Last weekend was excellent for taking photos.  There are some many insects and birds out now and they're very photogenic which is great.  Bear in mind these are all very close to my house as with the other ones I've taken.  Also, I've sussed my macro on my camera, so can get better photos.

Then my two absolute favourites.

A damselfly...

And this last one.  I'll add a back story to this one.  I saw this owl last year, but it flew off before I could take a picture.  The wingspan is about 2 metres, so it's an adult and I also know that owls can live for 10 years in the wild, so I know it's the same one.  But on Saturday morning he was sat on this branch a good 100 metres away and it was a good spot to see it.

After the owl, I think I can give up taking photos.  Amazing animal.

How I know that summer is pretty much here.  The cicadas buzzing on Saturday were very loud.

I'm a little disappointed about this one as it's slightly out of focus.  But this frog froze in this position for about 2 minutes.

Looks like a toad.  And you watched it for two minutes?  Are there some mushrooms growing on that mountain that you nibble from on occasion?  Directions, please.

Probably is.  Nature interests me a lot.  And as for mushrooms, there seemed to be a lot of these black ones.  Thing is they were glistening and shiny.  Doubt they'd be good for you, and I've never been confident enough to identify edible mushrooms.  Black?  No way!

I snapped this guy on Saturday.  I call him Dennis Benton.

And last month.  I noticed this kind of 'snow' on some branches and trees near where I walk.

Then a couple of weeks after I saw this really weird insect.  (this is not my picture, as I can't seem to find it on my device at school  :-[ )

And I showed it to an English teacher in my school and he said it's called a 천사벌레 and that it is a massive pest.  That white stuff is dangerous to the plants and kills them.  Then I noticed all the moths/butterflies on the branches.

They were absolutely everywhere.  Thousands on all the trees in that area.

It's weird because the thing that excreted the white stuff looks so different to, what I thought was moths or butterflies.  When I walk there now there's tons of blue butterflies flying around.  If you google 미국선녀벌레, it tells you about them and how much of a pest they are.

And, some really tiny crayfish have started turning up the mountain streams.  Really funny to watch them, but hard to get a decent picture of.  Struggling how to see how they can get into streams high up in the mountains.   :undecided:

Looks like a moth to me.
I haven't really seen much variation in birds (aside from the storks(?) down by the river). Now that Colburnnn isn't as active maybe it's finally safe for me to go birding, although come to think of it I didn't bring my nice binoculars.

Fantastic photos as usual! I've never notice crayfish in the streams here in Korea before. I think I'll go out tonight with a flashlight and a bucket and see if I can spot any!

Moth/butterfly, not sure which
It looks like a moth, but I believe that it's a butterfly. Physiologically, moths have feathered antennae while butterflys have narrow antennae with bulbs at the end. Moths tend to position their wings horizontally against their bodies when at rest, while butterflies often have them vertically. Their are exceptions, but the dividing line between moth and butterflies can often be blurred, so that's not really surprising.

Juveniles tend to swim upstream. Given enough generations, they'll eventually find the headwaters.

That's what I thought, but it was midday when I snapped it, and I always thought that moths were nocturnal.   :undecided:

The storks are a hassle to get a decent picture of because you can never get close enough to them before they fly off.

I keep seeing this bird and it has an 'electric' blue tail and would possibly be a kind of kingfisher as it's always down in the water fishing.  But it's another one I can't get close enough to before it flies off.

You don't even need to go out at nighttime, if there is a shallow enough pond coming down with the stream, they'll be in there somewhere.  This bit is quite a way up the mountain, and it's not a continuous stream up to it from lower down, so I'm baffled as to how they can get there.  In this one area, there's about 10 or so.  Yesterday, I watched them for a bit and they were having a crayfish argument, there was one particular bully who was causing most of the problems.  Idiot crayfish bully.  I remember going to some crayfish parties (being vegetarian I didn't participate) in Scandinavia years ago, so I know how big they can get.  Just wee bairns these ones.

I'll have to keep an eye out for those whenever (if ever) I actually get outdoors and do some hiking.

Honestly haven't seen anything exciting nature-wise in a while. My grandparent's farm always had a lot of colorful birds (bluejays, cardinals, etc). plus of course the barn swallows, but even before moving here I wasn't able to visit often (we used to live a couple hours from them in Virginia but then we moved west. Now its at least a 2-day drive). Hell, it's been forever since I've even seen a robin. Only pigeons for me the past few years it seems

I used to catch crayfish from the stream that ran through my home town, but I never knew they were edible until I went to Ikea Korea. Granted, they probably weren’t the same variety as the ones in Saunders Creek...

I noticed this kind of 'snow' on some branches and trees near where I walk.

I saw a 뉴스 segment on this a few days back. Seems to be quite the menace in some areas.
