Title: Your Top 10 Albums of 2019?
Post by: Mister Tim on January 10, 2020, 09:38:41 am
I guess it's about that time, and I'm sat here deskwarming with nothing better to do (no, I'm not lesson planning. please don't call the Deskwarming Police!). Might as well see what stood out to everyone this year, and perhaps introduce y'all to some good stuff you might've missed.

Without further ado, here are my picks:

10)  Rotting Christ - The Heretics. (Black Metal, Greece)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2Bt38pbvlo&fbclid=IwAR2H-pjm8RHd0-pmF67ujxg2fFolyfuNjOmBx_qWIiZ4-pEaaM8SFr0ZyA8

9)  MONO - Nowhere Now Here. (Post-rock, Japan)

8 )  Boris - LφVE & EVφL. (Doom/Experimental, Japan)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmK_EQWoorM&fbclid=IwAR0nnjaTr5ZgF_mSuEP7aC0uikbkEHyewpK7kObgBvcHoqbStmmOXbPUQGw

7)  Devourment - Obscene Majesty. (Brutal Death Metal, USA)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfewJfnPyo0&fbclid=IwAR38AfTIYCIcHdfuagL8EGb8Zy4kWgPtOcIK5zApQab7DVJTipalt8z7k3Q

6)  Otoboke Beaver - Itekoma Hits. (Punk, Japan)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkWfFXnLpYg&fbclid=IwAR2hZbXrn9y5eYpFh7S7QFR9hQ1bMTqzCZvzG2rA0oZiwN9vPkJEYt6dNPA

5)  Black Pumas - Self-titled. (Neo-Seoul/R&B, USA)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G383538qzQ&fbclid=IwAR04A6y6dbjb6GsPz5MYFQHRqe1YhPeGCbREWOCymjsoMDK_kmsOf9-Hyvo

4)  Sunn O))) - Life Metal / Pyroclasts. (Drone, USA. Technically two albums, but both released this year, so I'll lump them together.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y20qC3qgpps&fbclid=IwAR16N_oVkb33KtMBRwSON9wSLAoG_vvKHpbKOv2p7VDFJ69BU0bxaQi19vc

3)  Intocable - Percepcion (Tejano / Norteno, USA. Waygook won't let me use Spanish accent marks, and that annoys me.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R2iRbR-hOw&fbclid=IwAR0yUQYO_ppcwEr50y7jbIqDVU27fI9kUJ1Y1ZoYKtDspsDl1pTbgUDIaIQ

2)  Glassing - Spotted Horse. (Post-Rock / Hardcore, USA)

1)  Twilight Force - Dawn of the Dragonstar. (Power Metal, Norway/Italy)

I listened through it once. Nothing grabbed me. The only things that stood out to me where the parts that sounded almost exactly the same as parts from 10,000 days. I'm sure I'll give it another go at some stage.

I feel you. 2019 wasn't a big year for me either, musically. Think the birth of my daughter had something to do with that (can't hear music over the crying lol). But if I had to choose a standout, it'd be Russian Circles - Blood Year. Can't recommend them enough:

I've been looking forward to Mister Tim starting this thread again.  Nice one!

Yeah same here, didn't get into too much new stuff this year.  The only standouts for me were Sunn O)))'s two new albums.  Loved both equally.  The new Boris album was ok but I find myself just going back to their older stuff.

Went to only one gig this year (the absolute crying shame of living in Korea); Deafheaven in Seoul which was brilliant  8)  I thought I'd see a few more foreigners there to be honest haha.

EDIT:  Big shoutout to Titus Groan for his music posts all year.  Pretty much everything he shares is gold.

The new Boris album was ok but I find myself just going back to their older stuff.

Yeah, they're one of my favorite bands and their last album was far and away my favorite album the year it came out, so the new one didn't really stand a chance at living up to my expectations. It did grow on me a fair bit after a few listens, especially when I listened to it when I was in a mood that was more receptive to the sort of atmosphere they were going for this time around. That's Boris for you, I guess. They've always been all over the place, and I love them for it.

It's weird to me to see people saying this wasn't a good year for music. I actually really struggled to whittle my list down to ten, given all the great music I got this year. The above-mentioned Devin Townsend, for example, was on my list for a few months, and it was fairly last minute that I bumped it off in favor of the new Rotting Christ.

I completely forgot that their Tears EP came out last year as well.  I listened to that a lot haha.

Also forgot about this.  I think there are a few Ghost fans on Waygook, what did people think of it?  I loved it but I hope their next new music is darker and heavier.  Hopefully we'll get an EP in 2020.

Nice!!  Good to see some Mayhem love here.  I have to admit I haven't listened to the new one yet but I will do after listening to that single.

Late last year I went through a short phase of obsession with Mayhem.  God knows how many times I listened to their first album and Live in Leipzig.  Them and Darkthrone.  I'd listen to Transilvanian Hunger (song) on repeat when I exercised haha.  What a time to be alive!

We get it. You're old and you don't like the newfangled musics of the youth of today. This thread isn't for you. Perhaps you could post in one of the several threads you've started about old-timey music instead?

Did you hear Gloryhammer's new album last year, Mister Tim?  Another 2019 release I forgot about haha.  They're probably my favourite Power Metal band.  So many good songs across all three of their albums.

Mayhem have been around for much longer than you're been alive. Their early releases helped define a genre. They are infamous for their various criminal and satanic activities to the point of legend, and I'm sure someone else will get murdered by them if their livers hold out long enough. Their drummer is universally recognized as being one of the greatest drummers in extreme (by which I mean too extreme for people like yourself, who perhaps have delicate constitutions) music, though in reality he's one of the greatest drummers in any genre.

They'll be selling more records than Hank Snow in 2080. If you are too soft for more lively genres of music, fine. You do you! But if you want to argue that Mayhem, who won a Spellemannprisen award for Order ad Chao don't make "good music"... well you're just a dingus!

That doesn't jive with what you've previously said about yourself. Were you lying then, or are you lying now? Anything else you've been lying out that we should be aware of?

And if you're capable of keeping with the topic of a thread, what do you think were some good 2019 releases? Can you do that, or will you admit that you're only here to troll?

Nothing says young and 21 like having your album list filled with primarily rock and not having a single artist of color.

You could not be further from the truth. The title is clear. It is as clear, in fact, as your total lack of critical reading skills.

What was asked was "Your top albums of 2019" NOT "your top albums released in 2019.

These are two very different questions. Do you teach English?

"Albums of (Year)" almost invariably means "albums released in (Year)." I'm reasonably sure most people could figure that out. If they couldn't figure it out based on the title alone, the first post contained nothing but 2019 releases.

I think you realize that, though.
