Title: Are you middle-class?
Post by: Liechtenstein on December 16, 2019, 11:28:09 am
Here's an article with 30 signs that say you are middle-class. I thought I was solidly middle-class. I'm certainly not lower due to assets and income but I don't consider myself upper, either. By any stretch of the imagination. Interesting read.

I answered No to every questions except: #4 (Y/N), #7, #10, #14, # 16-19

Middle class according to Brits where you have a double-barrelled surname and own half a county, or middle class according to Americans where you're not currently homeless?

I'm middle class, maybe lower end?

But some newbie English teachers barely above minimum wage might be working poor?

There are 2 classes; working class and upper class. If you own the means of production and make money by owning stuff you are upper class. If you have a boss and don't own things that make you money (without you working for it) you are working class.

The middle class is a buffer to stop the working class rising up and overthrowing the upper class. Working class people who are kept rich enough to keep the status quo. Don't waste time arguing what part of middle class/upper lower class etc etc you are, you are working class. Use that time to sharpen pitchforks.

More importantly I got Snow White.

That's upper class obviously. Though the double-barreled surname is not so much of an indicator any more. Otherwise there are a lot of upper class footballers.

The main differences between working class and middle class in the UK are traditionally as follows

Middle class - university educated, neutral accent, uses non-regional terms for things, working in a profession rather than a job, house owning, plans for the future, thinks a lot about kids' education, kids have traditional names, reads books, reads a broadsheet, watches cricket and rugby. Drinks wine, cooks foreign food at home.

Working class - obvious  regional accent and vocab, works in a manual job for a wage, lives in a council house, doesn't save for pension, kids go to local comprehensive and have made up names or names that used to be surnames, reads a tabloid,  no books in the house, holidays in Blackpool or Benidorm, drinks lager, has chips with every meal, watches football, smokes, has tattoos.

Under class - never worked, drinks cider,  some kind of drug problem, regularly breaks the law,  smokes rollies, lots of teeth missing, goes on Bemefits Street or Jeremy Kyle.

Obviously, these classifications have changed a lot over time as well as the traditional working class shrinking to a great extent

Working class ... have made up names or names that used to be surnames

Like what? First names like Jackson or Harrison or Smith? That doesn't conjure up images of the working class for me.

Where I'm from working class names used to be things like Gary, Darren, Bruce, Daryl, Sheryl, Kylie, Jason. But that was more 70s-90s. I guess it is more made up names now. A lot of -dyn, -lyn names. Jayden, Cayden.

I think these class concepts have kind of diminished over the last 20 years. Or mixed together somewhat.

Whenever I see Brits talk about someone being middle class, it's someone living in a big house with a luxury SUV. In the US we'd say someone was middle class if they owned a house and a car period.

Seems like everyone in the UK thinks they're working class. In the US everyone thinks they're middle class.

There's a level of inverted snobbery in the UK you probably don't get in the States. Claiming you're working class can give you kudos in certain situations.

To me, there is much overlap between middle- and working-class.

Maybe “working” implies physical work, so of knowledge workers might exclude themselves, where successful tradesmen (who might own a summer home and a luxury car) might not.

Yeah I'm middle class but I like to think I'm working class haha.  Like Stoat says I think it can give you some kudos.

For example, for some reason I've got a bit of a complex about other people thinking I'm lazy.  I can't stand it.  Little comments from various coteachers over the years... "I wish I had your job, it's easy/Foreigners have an easy time/You can travel the world" etc.  So whenever I can I always like to slip in that I got my first job at fourteen, bunching flowers on a farm and before I came to Korea I was working the night shift in a food factory.  It's my badge of honour

Wow it's refreshing to see some with a brain.  This is exactly the right answer.  There is no middle class.  You are either working or making money off other peoples work.  All of us here are working class.  I have over 500k in assets/no debt and I'm still working class..

only 900K and you have a lambo, that makes you an idiot for spending 25% of your net worth on a car.  This is how I know you're a stereotypical  'teacher" with 20kish or so in the bank after 5-10 years in Korea.
