Title: 400,000$ for a 300ft studio and i have to see this?!
Post by: PatrickBateman on December 16, 2019, 08:51:10 am
I live in one of the nicest offictels in Yogsan.  I pay 1.1m/month and 50,000,000 deposit...   Had the pleasure of using a bathroom in the building and had to gag to take a shit.  What it the actual fuk is these disgusting people thinking.  It's 15 days until 2020 ffs. Everyone around here acts all classy and has their nose stuck up in the air like they are some sort of aristocrat, yet they do things like this.  Not to mention all the frozen puke I have to dodge every morning on the sidewalks.

You had to use a bathroom in your own building? You should watch out what you are eating. Maybe keep away from the side street vendors outside your appt.

Wow.

An American co-worker in 2017 (who married a local) bought a house on the coast of Jeju for less than half that, and they live on it while teaching in Seogwipo, the southernmost city in South Korea. (Note: it's minus-7 at 4:30 am in Seoul right now but plus+8 in Seogwipo.)

Moral: Pay more to live with ants than to live where butterflies go.

Who would want to live in Korea? Seriously??? You consider +8 a nice day. In the tropics people would die from exposure at that temperature. What a maroon, as Bugs would say.

I'm shocked that a toilet open to the public has gotten trashed.

This toilet isn't around the slums of Seoul station where bums frequent nor in a nightlife district where drunks deface bathrooms and stairwells.  This is in a 50 story high rise with mable floors and the appearance of wealth and class.  But as most Koreans are farmers in suits, the bathroom is where any shred of class is crumbled onto shit covered toilet paper and thrown onto the floor.  Instead of thinking it's normal for a public toilet to be trashed, how about we hold people to a higher standard.

I had a look at the officetel  i bought just after the previous tensnt had moved out and before he had it professionally cleaned. I was pretty shocked . It looked like squatters had been living in it, like something from nightmare tenants/slum land lords. Dust and grime everywhere, strange stains on surfaces  empty and half full alcohol bottles all over the place, broken shelves, handles etc..this is how some salary men live hete I guess without their mommies to clear up after them

even on the tv programmes my wife watches, the tv crew often goes into someone's home for whatever reason, and the place is a complete mess. like, if i knew i was going to be on tv, i'd...make a conscious effort to tidy up a bit? actually, regardless of the tv crew coming or not, i still wouldn't want to live like that anyway. it's gross

i really don't think home deco is a thing here in general. when they show a celebrity's house, it's always the same: a huge living room that's completely bare, except there's a sofa on one side (with a weird matt beneath it), a tv on the other, an exercise bike in one corner, and one of those relax message chairs in the other corner. oh, and with awful lighting from the 100000 watt bulb from the ceiling light. my university hovel looked cozier, i swear

Everything just looks cheap in my opinion.  Which is a huge achievement considering how expensive everything is.

House fittings, decorating products and furniture in general is weird here. There seems to be some sort of monopoly where the only thing you can buy 95% of the time is tacky, faux wood, plastic covered, particle board. Or fake chrome. It doesn't matter how far you go up the price scale its the same shite. A few years back there was a scandal where the wife of one of the Chaebol families was secretly video taped while berating one of her underlings. One of the first things I noticed was that in the background of the video was the same gaudy, fake wood and plastic chrome that every other apartment in the country has.

Though if the home owner is of the older generation you will invariably find a clock that wouldn't look out of place in a bank waiting area or an intercity bus terminal.

This one is so monumentally stupid that anyone with an ounce of critical thinking should be able to notice it;s flaws.

You do realize that land and living space are going to be vastly more expensive in one of the most densely populated countries on Earth in terms of population and arable land. "Gee, why isn't everyone living in a suburban home with a backyard pool?"

Seriously how dumb do you have to be to think this is take makes any sense.

I'm not sure the writer knows how much studio apartments go for in NYC.

And Harry gets hits in the face by four bricks thrown from the roof in Home Alone 2 but doesn't die.  Incredible.  It's almost like it's not to be taken that seriously.  Unless you're humourless.  Anyway.

You ever thought of taking a shit when you wake up, before you shower and then going out and getting your coffee? Basically your mad because you can't engage in the slightest bit of long-term thinking and planning and are too lazy to take a 1 minute elevator ride.

1. As far as public toilets in big cities that see a ton of traffic, that's pretty clean. I mean at least there aren't any used needles. In fact, we can even look at other Starbucks
https://www.insider.com/starbucks-workers-petition-bathroom-needle-disposal-boxes-2019-1
2. You could always propose to the tenant's association that they either hire a different janitor or upgrade the plumbing system. Maybe pay some more in rent each month.

50 million deposit and you're still paying over 1.1 million in rent?  What a f'n rip off.

Gee, I see many officetels for 10 million deposit, sometimes 20 million and maybe 500 or 600 thousand won a month rent out here in the provinces.  New buildings too.

I personally chose a building built around 2000 with a modern renovation.  Two bedroom apartment for 10 million deposit and rent with maintenance (including apt electricity fee) comes to around 520,000 rent a month.  Great deal.  It helps lots of folks are moving to new apartments and are renting or selling their old ones at a loss.

If it were Seoul, the cost would be higher and the pay for public school lower which makes no sense.  They should pay more up there due to the higher rents.  But, it's Korea.  Things don't make sense.

He could have done it as the school provided one-room and left out the money aspect and it would have made more sense. The main concept is the juxtaposition of the living quarters and their quality vs. a prison it's the twist at the end- The reader thinks he is talking about one thing when in fact it's another. Putting the in the comparison of what $300k gets you in America vs. Korea, is just monumentally stupid. I mean, seriously, does the guy not realize that $300k gets you like a studio in NYC? Does he even know the maintenance costs for an average NYC apartment? That's why it's not that good of a joke- You can think of about 5 flaws with it off the top of your head. And anyone who has ever lived in NYC or similar cities (not a tiny sliver of the population) will be like, "Uhm..." LOMC comes across as a comic writen by someone with slightly above-average intelligence who thinks he's the smartest guy, not just in the room, but in the country. The Far Side or Non-Sequitur it is not.

This also ignores the fact that the $300k you use to buy the apartment is then returned to you after a period of time when you move out. That sort of changes things, yes?

The $300K part is not the main focus of the joke. You could omit that line and just say "It's the apartment they are thinking of buying in Busan" and it would have had the same effect.

Pretty much my point. The joke was fine but adding on the $300k part just makes him sound like an out of touch idiot who has never lived in a big city.

Juxtaposing it with a suburban house with a pool and crap just makes him seem even more sheltered and clueless.

This is a good post.

Many of you have asked what happened to Pecan? Well I'll tell you what happened.

A couple of years ago DeMartino went into a staunch defence of the removal of soiled toilet paper bins in Seoul bathrooms. There was shit flying everywhere. Pecan a 3 ply man of unimaginable wealth challenged DeMartino to a battle of shits whits about the pros and cons of having shit smeared toilet paper touching your knee caps or elbow whilst you were doing your business. In a clash of the decade waygook battle DeMartino defeated Pecan with a mountain of shit posts and Pecan left the site for good with his tail between his legs vowing never to return again. The Seoul toilet bin removal law was repealed the following day. All new buildings are required to be built with inadequate plumbing as a legacy of the aforementioned conflict.

Dirty toilet paper in the bin?

Or
