Title: What was your first Korean movie that you ever saw?

Mine was Oldboy. Saw it back in Canada.

301, 302. Fairly bleak movie. I wouldn't really suggest it unless you've seen and enjoyed The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover. Or you generally enjoy Peter Greenaway films.

Friend (친구).

Watched it with a friend at the Defense Language Institute back around 2003. I was studying Arabic, he was studying Korean. I remember being mildly jealous that Korean language cinema seemed much more interesting than the majority of Arabic language cinema, but to balance that out a bit I also remember thinking all the Korean music he listened to was completely terrible.

Attack the Gas Station

I didn't even know what Korea was, beyond crazy old North Korea, when I saw this. Thought it was pretty funny/good at the time (2000ish)

"Attack the Gas Station". After that I think it was "Sex is Zero".  After that, hmm..."The Classic" maybe?

Plan Man (플랜맨)

I was at a Korean cultural event and they showed this movie. A decent comedy with a touching backstory for the protagonist.

Not a movie, but in my HS and early uni anime days, I watched an anime adaptation of a Korean drama called 'Winter Sonata'.
Was pretty cheesy, but it didn't take much to impress a young adult with mild weabooism.

My first Korean movie was M*A*S*H*.  :P

No, but really, my first REAL korean flick was Adjosshi. Your typical young-girl-befriends-brooding-stranger revenge story. I enjoyed the crap out of it!  :azn:

Shiri (1999), I saw in 2002...

It was the first blockbuster post IMF crisis.

North Korean spy, South Korean agent, a beautiful woman, lots of action and intensity.

I enjoyed it.

The first Korean movie I saw at the movie theater was Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003).

It was beautiful on the big screen.

My Wife is a Gangster (2001) I saw in a video bang, the first film i technically saw while in this country.

It was hilarious!

Yup! I'm seeing that tomorrow in Myeongdong and my GF got me the deluxe boxset Blu-Ray for my bday.

Love that movie. Visual masterpiece.

The Bow   I saw it back home way before I ended up in Korea.

Oldboy was the first one I saw in Korea. I think.

The first Korean Film I actually watched (in an old Movie Theatre that doesn't exist any more...) Was called (in English) 'BEAT"  ['Biteu' in Korean -sorry, no Hangeul] in 1997. A pretty harrowing look at the lives of the Korean youth who DON'T succeed and exist on the margins of society; it focuses on the lives of 3 primary characters and is certainly not a 'feel good' epic.

I followed this up with another film in a similar vein from 2000 (again, in an old theatre that doesn't exist any more - anyone remember the old Piccadilly Theatre in Pimat Gol...?) The film was ( in English) 'TEARS'...again, about the lives of 4 poor, disaffected young people from Garibong slum in Seoul - again, pretty jarring stuff...!

R-Point

I actually saw this three weeks before I came to Korea.

Thought the bit where 'they' were advancing through the windy field, before one 'soldier' just dropped into the field, made me a wee bit scared.

A looooooooooong   time ago before I actually went to Korea I watched "memories of murder" about the murders that occurred in Hwaseong city which I actually ended up teaching in 2008.

I only actually got to see half of it since it was in the days of VHS and the video stopped recording when it was switched off (the film was broadcast at night - mainstream channels would not have a Korean language film on during primetime)

Old boy was my first Korean movie.

My first Korea-related movie however, (back then I literally knew nothing about Asia other than China and Japan) was Best Of The Best. Must've been in the early 90s when I was still in primary school.

Dude, seriously? A Korean film just won Palme d'Or a short while back. That's literally the definition of a movie coming out that is worth watching.

Sorry, but in this case the problem is you. Korea could put out the next Casablanca and you'd shit on it, not because it was a bad movie, but because it was Korean.

No dude, or dudess, I'm not a troll. I also don't get swayed by Palmes d'Or or any other palmes.

Why? Cuz I'm not a sheep.

What are you saying? Because a group of self-anointed self-important elitist snobs say something is excellent that it is? Really?

'Tis to laugh.

How's the new Purple Blue release doing for ya? Or is it Green Red? Or Magenta Aqua...I can never keep them straight.

That's an interesting assertion, because I heard from Ronnie Omelettes that you do occasionally chew your cud and surreptitiously nibble at the office plants when you think nobody is looking.

But don't feel baa-aa-aad. Sheep are cool!

Unless the only genres of film you enjoy are epic sci-fi/space opera/adventure or westerns, I can't really see why you wouldn't have at least a few Korean films you enjoy. If that's the case, then I understand. But in that case, since you're on the niche side of viewing and restrict yourself to a couple of genres, then you can't really pass judgment on the entire film industry. Either that or someone has a problem with subtitles.

Anyways, perhaps if we got some insight into your own taste in movies we can see what you like about them and offer some suggestions.

That is if you really do have an open mind and won't just spend the time watching it looking for things wrong simply because it's made by Koreans.
