Title: Things that make you irrationally angry
Post by: AvecPommesFrites on October 25, 2018, 10:28:23 am
I'll get the ball rolling.

-Students smudging makeup all over the walls and mirrors in the classroom. (Why is there a mirror in every classroom in the first place?)
-The admin lady shout talking every time she answers or makes a phone call
-Students littering on the way to school.
-Waiting in line at a supermarket or store and someone cuts in front of you and the cashier pretends like they didn't see it and serve said ***hole.
-Roundabouts with giant signs at all entry/exits clearly stating that cars on the roundabout have right of way and every single Korean on the peninsula losing the ability to read Hanguel.
- PEOPLE TYPING in CAPS LOCK For NO REASON.

Stepping over things really increases my blood pressure.
Laundry, handbags, shoes...

Also, jars left open on the counter because "I might want more."

Just put stuff away!

So many good things in life and especially in Korea, but these drive me nuts;

Spitting everywhere like camels (especially in covered bus station platforms, and inside schools!!! Yikes! Seems to be a male 'macho' thing. Also, megaphone trucks. English grammar nazi time! : mixing up "its vs it's", "Should have went / took / saw / did etc", again, open-mouth chewing. Just can't ever get used to that!!! Don't care about dangling participles or splitting infinitives or ending sentences with prepositions, though.

These days:

1) Smelling cigarette smoke in my bathroom
2) Students tearing up pieces of paper into tiny little bits and then stashing those bits in their desks or cubicles
3) Banks
4) Lack of reasonably priced pumpkin spice food
5) Sunlight sneaking into the classroom from somewhere unknown and fogging up the projector screen
6) Students scribbling outside of lines because they think this will get some point across but then complaining about their work getting displayed later DESPITE being told that this was going to happen so  :undecided:
7) Passive aggressive line cutters -- these are worse than normal line cutters

Also, jars left open on the counter because "I might want more."

That is alarmingly specific.

Spouses and family have a funny way of creating very specific peeves for people.

Like squeezing the toothpaste at the center of the tube and scrunching it all the way in, putting the toilet paper roll on the wrong way, never paying attention to where you stick your keys or wallet so that we have to go hunting for it before we leave for something (sometimes taking so long that you end up running late), drinking the rest of the milk but leaving about a tablespoon's worth of it in the carton so that you can stick it back into the fridge and not have to throw it away yourself, not closing the cereal bag all the way or leaving the bread bag open so that the next slice gets all stale because you don't see the point when you'll just have to reopen it again later, always carrying the TV remote around with you and leaving it in odd places so that no one ever know where it is at any given moment (I can't tell you the number of times I've found it in the fridge), and leaving the door wide open because you plan to leave again shortly ("shortly" sometimes turning into an hour).

When I see bad 'finishing' on something.  For example, when you go the bathroom, and the person who's done the grouting has done a shit job.  You have one job to do, do it properly.  If you're paid to do something, don't do a half-assed job.

...dad?

People who continually complain about sh*t but never bother to change. (Suck it up, or shut up)
People who ask your opinion but then get pissed because you GAVE your opinion, ya know, the one they asked for.
Spillage all over counters, tables, floors.  For Gods sake, just wipe it the f*ck up!  I think it's the laziness that kills me.
Waiting on people.  Not as in traffic, some one walking across the street, bank/grocery lines... but when you tell someone you're leaving at such-and-such time but you receive the "give me a minute" which always turns into 20-30 min wait.

When I play the directions in Korean and my kids say they don't understand. When asked why, they said we don't understand English. This proved my point that it is not that they don't understand, they are not listening.

Luckily my CT got pissed off after the second class this happened in and let them all have it. She even said before we started that is was in Korean and she still got the English is too hard to understand. She screamed at those kids. See it is not me, they aren't even trying.

I relate so hard to this. My mom never failed to forget where her keys were 90% of the time (I wish I was exaggerating). I'd always tell her to find a place to always leave them, but that advice never got through.

As for what makes me irrationally angry:

- People (family members mainly) who tell you "You'll understand some day." when referring to something that's an OPINION.

- Being treated like a child

- Korea's "Education" System

Littering.

I suppose it's the arrogance of the act that I can't stand.  I can't get my head around how someone thinks it's ok to just drop rubbish on the floor.  Or the people who take the last sip of their coffee and plop the cup on a nearby wall or something.

To make it country specific (sorry), I see it a lot more here than I did in the UK but that's because of the absence of bins.

Can't stand it.  What's even worse is when you've set a time to meet someone, then they message you to say they're running late (bit annoying but ok) so they set a new time, then they're still late to the new time they set!!!

Meanwhile I'm waiting around like an idiot because I always arrive ten minutes early so I don't risk being late

Actually, after finding out about misophonia, it would certainly explain my dislike for people constantly sniffing.  That admin lady who worked in my teachers' room in the first semester sniffed, almost once a minute for 6 months.  I couldn't sit in the teachers' room as it just annoyed me.  But just mild annoyance.

Quote
Misophonia:

Misophonia is a condition in which a person is overly sensitive to sounds. Usually the trigger sounds are noises made by other people, such as chewing or tapping a pen. People who suffer from misophonia become disturbed or aggravated when they hear the sounds. Some misophonics avoid the irritating sounds by physically leaving the room, while others may display angry outbursts.

A number of sounds can elicit the agitation characteristic of misophonia. Chewing noises are probably the most common trigger, but other sounds such as slurping, crunching, mouth noises, tongue clicking, sniffling, tapping, joint cracking, nail clipping, and the infamous nails on the chalkboard are all auditory stimuli that incite misophonia.

Most of the sounds that trigger misophonia are produced by the human body, but some misophonics become annoyed by the sounds of inanimate objects, such as clicking of a remote control or the whirring of a motor, although the degree of irritation is not usually as severe. Interestingly, people who suffer from misophonia do not experience irritation when they produce the same exact noises themselves.

When parents commit murder-suicide and take their children with them.

That seriously ruins my day. I go around brooding for hours. It REALLY upsets me beyond all bounds of reason. So, I was ELATED (it seriously made my day) when there was that news report earlier this year about a parent who tried it by making the kid jump off the bridge too and the parent died but the child survived.

Oh, and when I knock over my drink. I tell myself to be careful and seconds later knock it over and get extremely frustrated. Not as angry as when I lose an hour or two of work on the computer, but a more lingering, lasting kind of grrrrrrrr.

My K-Parents-in-Law dropping by to our apartment on a weekday just because they are close by or will be close by. They never ask if it is convenient to visit and then when they come by, they end up staying for hours. We always need to order the food that they wish to eat.

My wife never has the guts to tell them "No!".

If I see a carton of milk, I start making a cup of tea, get said carton from fridge to make tea and it does not have enough milk in it, the relationship is over.  We are not meant to be together.

The worst part was that he set his watch 15 minutes fast so that he would be on time... it didn't work.

I should tell her. If you arrive 5 minutes early you should apologize and ask if you can start speaking to me. But that' d probably ruin the dynamic.

I think some students think I'm irrationally angry when I get upset and demand immediate end to:

1. Wearing a hat when entering a classroom;
2. Sitting at the back when they know my rule is: sit at the front;
3. Speaking Korean in English class.

Whether its on public stairs going into a subway station or on an escalator or after getting on the subway and just stopping in the door despite the dozen people behind them trying to get on, I just want to shove them out of the way. I don't of course, but I can dream.

I have one student whom I've NEVER seen without this one specific hat on. I'd feel bad at this point asking her to remove it. I've been teaching her over a year now.

And agreed, some of my smaller classes will try to sit at the back and leave 3 rows open up front. They could at least hide their disdain for learning English

People who don't respect the

"Exit before entry" rule

Elevators, buildings, T-junctions.  Seriously, it isn't difficult!

Smoking as close to a doorway as possible whilst being (technically) outside means that everyone who enters or exits the building has to breathe your smoke.  Spitting while smoking means that whilst beathing your smoke, they have to walk through your spit.

Arseholes who drive though green man crossings when you are on them, then pretend the don't see you by staring ahead.  Who only looks forward when they drive?

Yup. Repeatedly screaming, literally screaming, at you for attention when you are 2 feet in front of them and helping another student drives me up the wall..and it happens every single day, every single class, lol.

Also, a few students singing, laughing, turning around in their seats and doing it repeatedly after you called them out on it. Having no consequences for most things makes me crazy.

Like the Mexican cultural appropriation this is a form of racism. Thinking Indians can't deal with someone immitating their accent as well as white people, like Scotsmen for example

Hold onnnnnnnnnnnnnn, Apu is being written off of The Simpsons due to racial stereotyping?????

Holy hell, remember when they went to Canada? And they played with Canadian stereotypes? Guess who was upset? NO ONE

But those overly sensitive, ***** Indians, I guess they're all upset. They're so bloody weak, you tell an Indian that you don't like their shirt and they crumple on the ground and cry like a little ****.

Wait............ Do I sound like an azzhole? I do, do I? Well, if you're for Apu getting written off, that's how I see YOUR thought process.

Why not write off Groundskeeper Willy? He's a walking stereotype. Professor Frink, he relies on the scientist/Nerd stereotype. Comic Book Guy?

Apu is brown though. And if you're brown, you must be so bloody weak minded that you can't handle a character like Apu.

I don't think it's the Indians who are upset.

I completely agree.

There's nothing worse than a white American/Canadian/Western person who feels the need to "protect" people of different colours.

Black guy gets shot in the back after shoplifting? Get upset.

White guy wears a sombrero? That, you can leave to the ACTUAL Mexicans. You look like an absolute knob getting upset about it ON BEHALF of Mexicans (Who are actually flattered 85% of the time)

Once I was in Mexico, and when my students gathered for a group photo, they threw a sombrero on me and gave me a ukulele to pose for the photo. One of them even commented jokingly saying "This is racist as hell," and posed with me.

That said, I saw many comments online by Indians saying Apu should STAY, as he was one of the most kind-hearted and positive characters in the Simpsons. This whole controversy is dumb and shouldn't have happened to begin with.

Ten years ago, when the UK government was promoting laws against 'hate speech', they insisted that comedy would not be affected. Ten years later, the speech police are all over everything and you can't even make a joke without being labelled an evil racist, sexist, homophobe, or any other kind of -ist or -phobe they can think of.

We've all seen actual racism and discrimination and it's pretty shitty, but not every joke or comment comes from a bad place. While I hope that Korea can get over its genuine racism, I also hope it doesn't end up like western countries with all the crazy political correctness.

Has anyone here even seen a new Simpsons episode recently? I haven't, probably for about 15 years. Seasons 2-10 are the only good ones (absolute gold, though. Some of the best TV ever). There's now more bad Simpsons episodes than good ones. The real outrage here should be why they bother to continue making them.

I watched episodes here and there through the teens and early 20s seasons. The last one I ever watched was the Lady Gaga episode. It was almost as though it wasn't a comedy anymore. That was about 8 years ago.
2-10, as you say is absolute classic tv. Even 11-14/15 there is more good than bad. But it took an absolute cliff dive after that.

Geez, that Lady Gaga episode was like poison; I stopped watching after it as well. I still love the seasons 1~6 or so (some funny later episodes), but I can't watch it anymore. "Bart gets an F" in season 2 is still one of my favorites.

I recently rewatched 2-10. Absolute genius. It's amazing how they changed, even from 11+. Seems that's when they started adding more celebrity cameos, too. Those were never funny. Did the writers change at that point? obviously something did. Probably something I should have researched

I don;t understand why this bothers people. For one thing, who cares?

For another it's cleaner and you don't get stuff on your hands and your burger holds its shape better. If anything falls out the other end, it is caught by the wrapper.

I won't go so far as to say not eating it from the wrapper is wrong, but there are zero reasons I can think of to do it the other way. If you have a good reason, please enlighten me.

The Simpsons paved the way for animated, adult-oriented satire, but lost ground to South Park, Family Guy and their various offshoots and imitators. While they found new ways to shock and offend, The Simpsons more or less tread the same ground. The audience changed but the writers couldn't figure out how to adapt.

Littering....althought for me that's not irrational it's totally unecessary and arrogant.

Pedestrian lights/Traffic lights in Korea. WHY do they take five minutes to change? I get so impatient waiting for them. In the U.K you press the button and it changes for you to walk, similarly traffic lights have a sensor at certain junctions so if there's nothing coming the other way the light changes and you go. It's such a minor thing but it bothers me so much every day

Eastboud/Westbound advance green (18 secs) ---> E/W green light (30 secs), Half of pedestrians get to cross (east and west walkers.

THEN

Northbound/Southbound advance green. (18 secs) ---> N/S green light (30 secs), the other half of pedestrians get to cross. (North and south walkers.

REPEAT FOREVER.

I hate crossing the street here. Because I'll get to cross going north on the east side of the road. And then the lights will change and then the other northbound people on the west side get their turn. Just let the N/S traffic have a regular green light at the same bloody time. UGH

I understand opening windows to get fresh air is important in small offices shared by four or five people; totally normal.  But gigantic corridors in a huge school are never going to get stuffy.  They're big enough for air to circulate anyway without having to have every single window open.

Every year the same...  :blank:

Staff in the office making all sorts of over the top loud sighs and groans after actually having to do some work presumably to let everyone else in the office know they've actually done some work for a change.

The ignorance of doing something that they've been paid to do.

This one is 100% irrational. I have no idea why this made me so angry.

My kids are doing an English pop song festival. One class picked Faliz Navidad.......
1) That is not English.
2) There is only one English sentence in the whole song that you repeat. (I wanna wish you a merry christmas, from the bottom of my heart)
3) Which English teacher approved this? Why? (Did we think it was all English?)

After 7 years of English education (3rd year MS) this is as good as this class can do..........

Again, this is 100% irrational. No reason to be angry. I am just disappointed that this is all we can come up with.

I bought water-resistant running sneakers because of this. The socks just weren't keeping my feet warm, especially on windy days, so I found shoes that had very little air flow in them. Saved my toes my first year.

I'm feeling particularly salty today so:

- NETs who pathetically ask for favours or help, on FB groups, for the simplest damn tasks. Their request will usually end with
  "pleeeeeezzzzzz"
- NETs who buy jack sh*t, but constantly ask people to lend them things.
- Every one of my CTs being completely useless with a computer.
- The ability for anything mildly intriguing to grab my attention and distract me from studying Korean.
- All SUVs and their drivers, particularly crappy Korean ones
- The cafeteria only serves warm water, mixed with some disgusting grass tea.
- Asian culture and drinking warm water
- It feels like drinking phlegm, ENOUGH with your ridiculous superstition, cold water isn't harmful!
- Rice cakes being "gifted" from person to person, since nobody in the office wants them, until they arrive in the hands of the
  NET.
- Yoga
- Anything claiming to 'detox' you, whatever the hell that means.
- People who spend 40min at the gym to walk on a treadmill. Seriously, the only things you've lost are 40min and 70bucks gym
  membership.

I wanted to put Korean driving culture but that doesn't make me angry, it enrages me.

On a food theme-

Restaurants that don't offer straight salt, but instead give you salt mixed with sesame oil and that's how they got it set up (like premixed).
Restaurants that don't offer Kloud or Cass or Hite, but instead only offer that dreck Fitz (which makes Hite taste sublime)
Overly carbonated or sweet magkeolli
Red bean 붕어빵
콩국수 places that use those crappy thin white noodles
Burgers with a bunch of shit on them.
Doughy pizza crust
Doritos and Cheetos
Why is there no filet o' fish here?
Tater tots suck
Boneless chicken that is either ONLY white meat or ONLY dark meat
Pepsi cola with any food other than American Chinese
Pepsi cola used as a mixer in drinks
Too many soy bean sprouts in anything
Any place except for a buffet/bargain place serving frozen KBBQ meat
People who ruin raw oysters with cocktail sauce, gochujang, or any other sort of crap.
People when sent out for drinking snacks, come back with Pringles and sweet puffs instead of mixed nuts or pretzels.

Hite and Cass, assuming they aren't old and stale, aren't really so bad as just spectacularly unspectacular.

Fitz on the other hand gets me angry and tense when I start drinking it. It's like a beer version of the negative extracts of Tequila, Jager, and Whiskey, only diluted so that instead of getting you aggressive, you just get irritable. That's what it is- irritability in a bottle.

Going to bathroom only to find no toilet paper and having to go back to your desk to fetch your private stash.

I just take my private stash with me when I go. Prepare for disappointment.

Here's the thing, I usually take a little of my private stash with me, just in case. This is one of the few times I forgot to take some, and, of course, the universe sensed my moment of weakness and made me pay for it.

I bought water-resistant running sneakers because of this. The socks just weren't keeping my feet warm, especially on windy days, so I found shoes that had very little air flow in them. Saved my toes my first year.

If you can't manage to find yourself sneakers made of leather or rubber treated for water resistance, get yourself some comfy, fur-lined/water-resistant boots. Those are normally plentiful here and keep your feet nice and toasty, too... although I think fur-lined sneakers get sold here, too, lol.

No. Thatís bad, I agree. You are expecting a neutral taste and texture but get a -5/10

But still worse is the red bean that is pretending to be strawberry filling. Thatís a 7/10 expectation and -5/10 delivery!

Not to be contrary for the sake of being contrary, but I actually like red beans a lot - as long as they aren't sweetened with a ton of sugar poison.

Like, I have a thing for all beans. Beans are great. And I love the red bean 죽 and stuff. But 90% of the time when you get red bean anything, it's so sweet you can't even taste the beans, and it's just like stuffing a bunch of sweet paste trash in your mouth. Gross.

I think the Bulgogi is an exception (and its a pizza I rarely eat, so that might be coloring my view). You think it might work on a spicy chicken tender pizza (spicy chicken tenders, that's in line with corn, greens, baked beans, mac & cheese and so on) but nope. Utter dreck. Now what is divine is a Greek pizza- Gyro meat OR black olives (but not both), red onion, feta, spinach, and tomatoes.

Cheers
-닭꼬치 with real chunks of Chickine
-막창 that is cut into rings
-Cheesesteaks and hot dogs on soft buns/rolls
-Coca-cola from the fountain or can or bottle

Jeers
-닭꼬치 that's that lukewarm mass of mystery meat slathered in brown sauce.
-막창 that is cut into strips
-Cheesesteaks and hot dogs on buns that are as crispy as crackers and give you bakers lung from the fragments
-Coca-cola from a plastic bottle

And a controversial one...Anyone else getting tired of the ubiquitousness of Indica IPA? I like a good IPA, but these days I just sigh when I see Indica as the draft IPA offering and go with something else. I remember what, like 5-6 years ago finding IPA was a treat and Indica on draft would be carefully noted. Now? Le sigh.

I've had dogs and cats my whole life and we ALWAYS use that method when speed and animal safety is needed.

How can one be bothered by it when one sees its mother do it regularly. The animal goes prone to be compliant and the dog or cat is transported without injury or incident.

Hence, it is IRRATIONAL to get angry at that.

Ah,... apt for this thread then. K.

Because most types of anger is just that....rational! Roger that!

Anger is a natural and rational reaction to personal frustration and interpersonal betrayal.

Just look at the top performers in many sports, at leaders who perservere through adversity.

Stoicism and detachment ain't the only rational ways of responding to challenges.

Never understood some people's obsession with nail clippings. I mean we all know household dust is made of human skin and hair etc.. we shed stuff from our bodies all the time. You think nail clippings are worse than human hair or skin? I mean sure I guess you should clip them into a bin or something instead of straight onto the floor but if I see one on the floor, I'm not going to freak out,

It annoys me when I see them on the floor in my classroom because it means they've been spat out of someone's mouth  :-[

On the theme of chairs... it really gets me when people lean on the back of my computer chair when I'm using the computer, especially when it causes the chair to start reclining.

Not as much as you think.  In fact, very little of house dust is made of human sheddings.

People are stupid when it comes to "disgusting". Look at people's reaction to smoking. They'll rush to buy the latest Apple Crap that was made in some factory in China with child labor, crap wages, and spewing toxic compounds in the air, but then bitch and moan that they got the faint whiff of tobacco.

Ajosshi spits in street? Horror. My five dogs pissing everywhere on the street in HBC? "They're dogs, they're like, better than people, plus they're mine so that makes it okay." You think people enjoy dodging the rivers of dog piss that are everywhere?

And don't even get my started on people acting like covering your mouth stops the spread of germs. No it's just to make sure you don't spray globules onto the guy in front (you should still do it, but stop treating it like it's some strong barrier). Newsflash: Unless you're rolling around in a surgical mask, and quite likely a painter's mask type job, you're still spreading that crap around every time you breathe. What, you think your hand is some sort of magical airtight barrier? Put your hand over your mouth. Can you still breathe in and out? Guess what numbnuts, you're still spreading germs and you probably just put a bunch on your hand to be picked up by the next sad sack that walks by and touches the door handle you just ran your slobby hand over. I mean, I don't want some guy coughing on my fork and handing it to me, can the same time can people stop acting like their hand is some Biolevel-4 containment field and lighten the eff up about it? "Oh my gosh I was possibly exposed to germs because some guy coughed, but then I'll go and make out with some random person in a club or use some nasty bar bathroom."

Seriously, people need to get over themselves and germs and "disgusting". The above are just three of the big ones that usually get tossed around here. There's a time to be really careful and there's a time to not lose your shit and let your kids get dirty and build up their immunities. Learn the difference between disgusting and non-sanitary/toxic. In reality 'disgusting' is what they feel. 'non-sanitary/toxic' is whatever hypocritical nonsensical justification they use for their latest nanny state law that makes them feel better because they got to virtue signal and tell other people what to do (God forbid you ever tell them what to do, then their daddy/mommy issues well up) and add meaning to their insignificant lives and failure to live up to their own over-inflated expectations. "I didn't fulfill my dreams of being a track star, but I can still become happy by making this other person's life miserable".

You want to make things better in terms of germs? Go make sure some Crap-Agra corp isn't mixing pig shit in with my lettuce and feeding reject dead cows to their own offspring mixed in with the feed.

Nobody likes being coughed on, nobody likes walking in other people's spit, nobody likes getting shoved on the subway, and nobody likes walking through other people's second hand smoke. Are these things huge problems? No, not individually, but when things like this happen multiple times a day, every day, they make daily life a grind and rather unpleasant.

I'd imagine this is what everyone's main gripe here is.

Conversely, in England, when people say excuse me, hold the door for you, and are generally courteous of others (and not only thinking about themselves), it makes day to day life much more pleasant, and your day go by much smoother.

The point of the rant was to show how hypocritical and arbitrary everyone is.

Also, the people who whine and moan here are probably whiners and moaners back home. It's part of the character of people who externalize blame, have a poor ability to consider alternative explanations and lock their opinion very quickly.

Getting to the checkout at the supermarket to find out that a particular item is actually 1+1 so I have to trek all the way back to get a second one.

I've been burned by this so many times that I make a real effort to double check for the 1+1 labels so I don't miss them.  But most of the time as I do the dumb foreigner walk of shame back to the shelf, I find that it isn't mentioned anywhere!

Am I missing something?  Is there a way of knowing what items are 1+1 even when they're not labelled?

No, never. Just a limitation is all.

Now, Ricky I'll happily trash, especially on his twitter feed when he posts some of his photos of his weight gain (note for the unaware, Ricky's twitter invites you to bash him on any number of things). The best comic twitters are ones where random users beat up on the comic and he recs your insults.

My problem with Ricky is that I think he genuinely didn't treat Karl well at all as time went by.  I adore the early XFM shows because you could really tell that a true friendship was blossoming.

By the time we got to the "Ricky Gervais Guide to..." shows he was pretty much belittling Karl at every turn and that left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Other thoughts...

The Office and Extras - absolute genius.
Life's too Short - Embarassing (why did they think Warwick Davies was the next big thing in comedy?)
Derek - Really really good pilot but then the two series were terrible.
Hello Ladies - Dynamite stuff from Steve.  Still rewatch it regularly.

I find myself saying "what are the rules??" fairly often. Hello Ladies is great - shame it was canceled
