Am I missing something, or do students not seem to every be prepared for class outside of having pencils. Few have notebooks, and even fewer have any scrap paper to write on.

I know this school system has its issues, but it says a lot when the ones who are supposed to be learning don't have much in way of supplies. Unless I'm missing something here?

It depends on their homeroom teacher and their grade.

Third and fourth graders rarely have notebooks, because writing is not a large part of their curriculum.

And other grades, if their homeroom teacher isn't a notebook person, then perhaps nobody has told them to go buy notebooks. And if their English teachers haven't required them to have notebooks, they won't bring notebooks.

But also, some kids are just unprepared and don't remember their stuff, so even if they are required, a lot will forget them.

I just don't get how they learn anything without taking notes. Then again, actual LEARNING doesn't seem to be the goal here...

I never took notes in school unless specifically asked.

I did alright.

I rarely had to take notes.  I'm an auditory learner and can remember what I hear.

However, in one of my high school classes I had to take notes due to a power struggle/personality clash with one of my teachers.  He thought that if I wasn't writing down everything he said I  must not be paying attention. Half of the time I just doodled while looking attentive.

I'm not saying EVERYONE has to take notes. Everyone has their own way of learning (I'm a note taker myself). It's a different story when NOBODY does it.

Yeah. I didn't start taking notes until I was in high school.

I think expecting elementary school students to studiously take notes like they're in university or something is kind of ridiculous.

Yeah, it was the same at my high school. They would come in to class CONSTANTLY with no writing utensils or notebooks (same problem kids every time) and some would do the same during their midterms and finals.

I might've missed something somewhere else, but did he specify elementary school?

I teach middle school, and the same applies. Granted I wouldn't really expect middle schoolers back home to be avid note-takers, but Korean middle school includes what would be American high schoolers.

Then again, I'm not sure why they'd bother taking notes in my class in the first place. There are zero consequences for doing poorly in my class, much to my chagrin, so I'm forced to admit that I wouldn't take notes either, were I in their shoes.

You make very good points. I should've clarified that I'm middle school. It actually makes sense coming from this perspective (sad though because it reinforces how insignificant our class is). But it sounds like this is common across all levels.

You'll be pleased to know that note taking is shockingly rare at university level as well.

Back when I used to teach elementary school, I noticed one of my 4th grade girls taking notes when I was explaining when to use "an" vs "a." I now have that same student again in middle school, and she still takes notes. It made me happy then, and it makes me happy now.  8)

Because this is the ranting thread:

This year my Mondays are nothing but all-girls classes, and my Tuesdays are nothing but all-boys classes. I expected that to mean that Mondays would be great and Tuesdays would be hell, but boy howdy, is that ever not how it has played out so far. I feel like I'm in Bizarro World.

This is a small rant but I really hate when people don't mute the keyboard tones on their phones. It's just annoying to hear that annoying clicking sound every time they sit there typing furiously on their phones. Oh and another time I was in a quiet cafe and there was a person there receiving tens of kakao messages with the loud kakao notification sound. I mean how easy would it have been to just mute the phone considering we were in a small, quite cafe. I'm done now. Have a nice day.  ;D

I think note taking is like a punishment to some kids.

I just wanted my 4ths to write a few vocabulary words (English, Easter, Holiday) and one boy refused to, threw his notebook on my desk and walked out. Like bruh, you're 10, don't be such a crybaby.

Some of my kids did it and proudly showed me their work and asked me to grade it. I think it just boils down to their personality and how much they enjoy getting praise.

Happened to me at both my schools last year. And at one of them, they even pulled me out to take my picture in the middle of the ONLY class I had that day. Why?

  I had the same thing last year.
This year I'm keeping a blazer at school until picture day happens.  They're not going to catch me unprepared this time around!
