I'm reading Dune by Frank Herbert right now, for about the 4th time. One of my favorites since I was about 13, it gets better every time :D

Such a great book, the back story that he created the world is amazing. I still need to get around to reading the other books.

I am currently going through the Dresden File books, they are pretty good. I really enjoy the first person writing.

I am going to read Star Trek: Destiny next.

Honestly the rest of the series isn't that great. The first two sequels are like a coda to Dune and then the story of Paul's children, respectively, and they are pretty good. After that the story jumps forward centuries or millennia between each book and they get weirder and less coherent each time. It's worth it (particularly Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) if you're really into the lore but I'd recommend not reading them all in a row :p

Just finished the Starfish/Maelstrom/Beta-Max/Behemoth series by Peter Watts.

Hard science-fiction dealing with deep-sea microbiology, global environmental collapse, virtual ecosystems, and the psychology of abuse victims.
Strange topics to tie together, but it's incredibly well done, if not dark and just a little bit depressing.

I am currently going through the Dresden File books, they are pretty good. I really enjoy the first person writing.
I recently finished that 14 book marathon. Well worth the massive accrued sleep debt!

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. I generally don't read this genre at all but I was looking for something different for my book club to read and I am actually really liking it when I am not freaked out by it... :P

The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan.

Liberal use of the word "baloney" makes this quite enjoyable.

Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick.

It's a journalist's work put together of seven years of interviews with North Korean defectors. It's really well written and I haven't been able to put it down for the past two days.

I love a good non-fiction book.

Just finished Savages and the Kings of Cool.  Nice palate cleansers to Atlas Shrugged and Steve Jobs.

50 pages to go on A Dance With Dragons then I'm moving on to reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
I'd rather be rich than stupid.

Enjoy them, they are great book. I think the toughest for me to get through was "Wizard in Glass."

It would make an amazing TV show if they ever decide to go ahead with it.

The graphic novel/comic version I read was absolutely amazing. It was only the prologue story, but it really sold me on the Dark Tower world he created (I think it was called The Gunslinger Born). If you haven't read any of those, they'd be a good replacement for the show if it never gets up and running. The artwork is disgusting and beautiful and everything in between.

Currently reading Dracula. When that's finished, I'll be moving onto Jane Eyre.

About to start Dune, then I'm going to watch Jodorowsky's 2014  documentary on Dune, then the 1984 feature film, then finish reading the rest of the saga:

Dune (1965)

Dune Messiah (1969)
Children of Dune (1976)
God Emperor of Dune (1981)
Heretics of Dune (1984)
Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)

Advice welcome on my approach. Should I read the original trilogy first or the entire saga, or is my plan ok.

I don't really know how other people feel about it, but once I got to God Emperor of Dune things started going really slow. My interest ground to a halt and by the end of the book I was like wut  :blank:. Loved the original Dune and the original trilogy itself is definitely worth reading, but by the fourth book things just stop happening and it takes an extremely heady, religious/philosophical turn. In other words, it becomes less and less like the original Sci-fi novel that you fell in love with.

Some of you purists may gnash your teeth at me, but I prefer the prequel series written by his son to the original series (starts with the book House Atreides). Simply put, more things happen. Maybe it picks up again after God Emperor; I wouldn't know. I just know I tried very hard to finish the series and I could not. If you succeed, let me know if I'm wrong!

Just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  I liked it better than I thought I would.  It's a shame Stieg Larsson (the author) died before he could see what a success his books would become.

I can't wait to read the next two.
