I am reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The writing is quite flat, but the plot is beginning to pull me in -- I'm about a third of the way through. It's good enough for an unwind.

Agreed. It is really hard for me to read translations. Bohumil Hrabal seems to be an exception.

I can't wait to read "A Dance With Dragons" by George R R Martin.

...I'm a closet fantasy nerd

Me as well! I've been waiting sooo long for the next one int he series to come out. Hope he hurries up!

It's out July 12th!  I already pre-ordered and I'm heading up to Seoul for the weekend just to pick it up.

My favorite book is The Little Prince.
I recently reread it. Its wonderful for preparing you to understand children and help you return to that mindset.
It always helps me learn to appreciate things again.

i read the girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy... i can't lie, i think it was over-hyped. i kind of had to force myself to finish reading them just to find out what happened in the end.

Well I am  reading a chapter in a book about gang rape and dismemberment :o
Oh, it's the Book of Judges chapter 19 verses1-29. Many other violent stories in there as well. Those stories never were taught on Sundays.

Teacher Man by Frank McCourt (he wrote Angela's Ashes)
- its a great book. an account of this authors earlier years working as a teacher at an inner-city school in New York.
a very candid read about creative teaching when students are uninspired to learn.

Hey you should have a look for his brother Malachy's book called "A Monk Swimming".  Probably one of the funniest books I've ever ready.

I've been on a reading kick since a billion people on here mentioned whatthebook.com. Ordered five and have read 3 in the past 2 weeks. The first was a book called My name is Mary Sutter, about a woman who wants to be come a surgeon in the US Civil War. It was ok, interesting in terms of historical imagery for someone who isn't American.

Then I read David Sedaris's Me talk pretty one day, which was HILARIOUS! Gonna order some more of his stuff.

Then this morning I finished Jodi Picoult's new one, Sing you home. It was excellent (maybe cos I could relate to the gay rights issue) and Had me wanting to throw the book across the room at times. Damn right wing bible bashers! Anyway, it was really good and I'm keen to see what Ellen Degeneres does with the movie rights.

Next up: A fantasy novel by Malinda Lo called Huntress. It's YA, but her first book called Ash was brilliant, a kind of Cinderella revamp:)

Everyone on this thread seems to be posting super intellectual books. Is eveyone ashamed that they read Patricia Cornwell and other bestsellers?:)

Awesome thread.  I'll be looking into Shantaram, and Infinite Jest.

Reading now:
John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman
Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire

Just finished and worth reading:
Angela's Ashes, 'Tis, and Teacher Man by Frank McCourt
The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld

I have Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and A Heartbreaking Work of Extraordinary Genius, but I haven't had the motivation to read them until now.. thanks.

Currently reading:

Freakonomics on audiobook. Interesting stuff.

Blindness by Jose Saramago. A nice commentary on human nature but very, very difficult to read because of the author's lack of punctuation.

Tina Fey's Bossypants on my iPad.

With no TV or XBOX to distract me I find I read a lot more than back home. I just finished reading Angels and Demons and now I am reading Flags of Father. However, I am not sure where to buy English books. I live in Incheon, and What the Book in Seoul is little far. Any suggestions?

Excellent choice! You'll enjoy it.

I'm reading A Game of Thrones along with the series. Reading + watching makes it a bit more interesting.
