I for one, want to know why we are teaching the kids to say "badminton" in the first place. Is it that popular of a sport in Korea? Do Koreans think all English speakers play it? It's not one of the major sports in the States (as in "Hey it's badminton season"/ "I've got to watch the badminton finals tonight.") It seems a little random.

I used to play it as a kid, though probably as badly as I pronounced it :-[

I think it's more because it is wildly popular here, at least with married couples in their forties wearing matching uniforms.  I was recruited to join my school's badmitten team as we are lacking in male teachers; it was an incredibly intense experience.

On Saturday, I walked from Uiwang Stn down the west side of the lake, down HwanggujiCheon, to GweonseonRo and then East to Suwon Station. 12km

Yesterday, my buddy and I climbed the whole DaeRyongSan (900m) course in Chuncheon. 8.5km

Why do I do this to myself?
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free

Meh. I think it's fair enough. It's popular in Asia and it's a sport they are likely to play. So as far as describing what games they like etc it's nor bad. Plus it's phonetically written so it's good practice.

Don't forget that popularity is subjective particularly from an American perspective. Most of the world loves soccer and calls it football. More or less no one plays NFL. Baseball is well known but not played much and basketball is global.

I hate the feeling of someone ignoring or avoiding me on purpose. It gives me bad anxiety.  Facebook puts that fear into me too often. I hate that facebook will show someone is online when they actually aren't. I have definitely gotten angry at people for ignoring me but they werent actually online... oops

Am I alone in prounouncing badminton without the first N? I would always say bad-mitten growing up, and only learned to correct it here in korea. A search for 'badminton' in the dictionary reveals that 'badmin'on' is an acceptable if not widespread pronunciation of the word~

I pronounce it with all of the letters--'bad-min-ton'--but I'm starting to wonder if I've always pronounced it like that or if I just think I have. This goes for other things that aren't just limited to pronunciation. Like... has "You should get some rest" always sounded mildly awkward to me? Or do I just think that because it sounds awkward in the textbook?? Three years in Korea is starting to affect how I think about certain English phrases and pronunciations.

Stuck at my travel school even though I rarely have afternoon classes. Can I just leave after lunch? Be nice if I could go back to my main school and work on stuff for middle school. Guess I'll just be working later today. Ho hum.

I know, me too! I think it's because if you're logged in on your cell phone, it will say you're online even though you don't have the window open.

back at the beginning of the school year my cot and boss kept nagging me to do bomb games, even though they're a bit long to do as anything other than a full-class review session. I tried out a non-ppt review game today but for the low level students the rules were too confusing, and also it was way too loud.

SO I'M GONNA DO A BOMB GAME OFF WAYGOOK HOPE THAT FINALLY MAKES THEM HAPPY

We'll see

Is it like this? Apparently it's a traditional thing to dye their nails with these flowers. I agree that it doesn't look that nice, though.

Yeah. My students also said they do it because they can't use polish.

YES thank you! I always thought they were just colouring their nails with an orange marker but then I saw some adults with it and I was like huh?

I am not sure. I imagine it has become a fad for some reason or another. For a while I was wondering why some kids had dirty nails.

It's a traditional thing and you dye your nails then it grows out over the summer and it's supposed to be gone when it's officially the next season. My friend had it done to her by some students. It's not so much a beauty thing as it is a time telling tradition, or at least thats what her CT told her in broken english XD

Ugh. I had one coteacher who ALWAYS wanted bomb games, but she wanted me to do them in like 5 minutes at the end of class. And I was like, "A) it takes a fairly decent amount of time to make a bomb game that perfectly matches the vocabulary in our book that we've been teaching, and B) it's not a good way for students to retain knowledge, and C) it takes more than 5-10 minutes."

Ugh. Just thinking about it makes me annoyed. I hate bomb games so much, unless, as you said, it's as like, a multiple-lesson review.

Bomb game went great. I guess that's what I'll do for finals review too... haha
