« on: February 01, 2012, 08:54:27 AM »
I've been watching about 1 movie per day since I've been here and probably have seen close to 500 movies so far lol.
What movies are you watching?

I just saw Sanctum, Alive, Honeymoon in Vegas, Boy Wonder, Midnight Meat Train, Creep, Limitless, and Skyline lol.

Really, tree of life was your worst film of 2011?  I know it wasn't to everyones tastes, but it defintely wasn't the worst film of 2011...

I recently watched a norwegian film called Trollhunter which i really enjoyed, and an aussie horror called Lake Mungo.  Both really good watches.

I have The Troll Hunter downloaded, I need to get around to it.   Not going to lie though, I was laughing during the trailer.

2011 was an abysmal year for movies.

Top Grossing films of '11

Harry Potter (sequel)
Transformers (sequel)
Pirates of the Caribbean (sequel)
Kung Fu Panda 2 (sequel)
Twilight (sequel)
Fast Five (sequel)
The Hangover 2 (sequel)
The Smurfs (basura)
Cars 2 (sequel)
Rio

Tree of Life was horrible.
Pretentious, long, boring, could have been just as effective an hour shorter, the shots of Sean Penn looking confusingly around the room like he's fresh off a lobotomy, this film has a 50% chance of winning Best Picture. If all the characters had English accents I'd bump the odds to 60%.

Still need to see The Skin I Live In and The Artist though.

The good news is that 2012 looks like an excellent year on paper.

wow could 2011 be any more lacking of creativity and originality?  Everything was a sequel lol.
When it comes to Hollywood, it seems they are getting worse when it comes to original screenplay and ideas.
Looks like the fluoride in the water really is killing their creativity area of the brain.

Watched the last two Harry Potter movies, Greenberg, and Once Upon a Time in the West (classic spaghetti western) recently.  I'm thinking of watching Kick Ass, or The Royal Tenenbaums (an old favorite) tonight.

My favorite movie of '11 was Drive.

Worst movie I saw in '11 was The Tree of Life.

I literally just finished watching Drive. Blew me away. I remember seeing the previews when it first came out and I thought "meh," but it exceeded my expectations big time, probably my favourite movie of '11 as well. I also really liked Midnight in Paris, but I love essentially anything Woody Allen does.

Oh and I just watched a documentary from 2010 called The Two Escobars, it was part of espn's 30 for 30 series, check it out, one of the better documentaries I've seen in a while.

Awesome movie! Park Chan-wook is an amazing filmmaker, the whole vengeance trilogy is fantastic.

Yea I didn't even want to watch it because of Gosling, but I was also blown away.  Love that 80's synth retro soundtrack it had too, best soundtrack of the year imo.

Old Boy is my favorite Korean movie.

Anyone seen I Saw The Devil? Still need to check that one out.

I watch a lot of movies, perhaps too many.  I've seen most of the major films this year, I liked MI4, Hanna, Planet of the Apes, and Moneyball the best.  In Time, Immortals, Flowers of war, and War Horse weren't bad.  I still have yet to see a few like Shame and GWTDT but once the busy teaching is over I will.

I also really like Tree of Life because I am a big Malick fan.  The cinematography is incredible and the film helps me to appreciate life more when you see the grand scope of it.  From each of his films I learn something new about myself.  But yeah if you're looking for an entertaining popcorn flick it might not be your cup of tea.

oh I forgot, I watched Syriana again last night and that is such an amazing film, I just wish Stephan Gaghan made more movies as he isnt afraid to push the boundaries and challenge his audience as well.

I liked Moneyball too.  Here's a fun fact:  Billy Bean actually went to my high school.  Do you think you have to be a baseball fan to appreciate it?

naw I've got Brit friends who watch Moneyball and loved it.  It cuts through the BS and really ventures into the beauty of what could be seen as a very boring game.  Its also great to see that success can be had without deep pockets as well.  Best sports movie I've seen so far as it didnt try to be too mushy and still reminds us that there is some integrity left in sports.

Man this thread makes me want to watch some foreign movie now, but a bunch of classes to teach now, boo

I came back from a much enjoyed vacaion in Shanghai a month ago.  It has been quite the comedown coming back to Korea after seeing what that city has to offer, so I've been trying to mentally extend / keep touch with my vacation by watching movies about or set in Shanghai.

Found this list on wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_set_in_Shanghai

So far have downloaded eleven of them (the rest seem not that good or cannot find subs for them) and watched 'Shanghai Triad' which was a blinding little film with an devastatingly played endgame by the gang boss in the film.

I just finished watching Bunraku from 2010.  Highly recommended if you like stylized fighting, westerns, sci fi, pop-up books, pin ball and puppets.  And that bartender guy from Cheers.

Now I have to see the Japanese version from the 60s.

Most recent in theatre - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.  I thought it was brilliant, but I'm a sucker for anything with Gary Oldman.

Last week I watched The Good, the Bad, the Weird (from 09 or 10 I think) and frigging loved it.

I worked on Harry Potter so i'm not going ot hate on that, but you're right, bad year for originality and the weakest year for a while, but still had some good films.

Drive, Shame, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Planet of the apes, x-men, Hugo, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the guard, take shelter.

And if you still think Tree of life was the worst film of last year, please watch the innkeepers!!
