CNN's Top 50 Dishes
« on: July 30, 2017, 11:12:09 AM »
Not Korea specific but it does deal with food.

Have you got a favourite here? Something that isn't here but should be? Something that is here but shouldn't be?

I pretty much agree with the list.

My fave - Hot buttered peaches and cream corn. Wow, nothing better.

I wonder how many people will think that those dishes were invented in those countries - when many actually weren't.

The author must have been Thai (or recently visited).

No arguments though. The food here is excellent!

Lists like these are pure fluff'n'fun. Capture food trends, popular thing, and try to hit a lot of countries to be linked or get views.

Lots of issues with living in Thailand (Internet being one), but Thailand should be commended for doing fusion better than most. Truly punches above its weight in the food rankings.

Ketchup??  Maple syrup???  Since when do condiments count as dishes?  Unless you're this girl, you wouldn't eat those as is without anything else.

Not a bad list, lots of tasty on it, but some things like condiments and junk food could have been replaced with actual dishes.  So much good food out there and yet ketchup makes it into the top 50  :undecided: (nothing against ketchup, I'm a big fan-- mustard can keep away though)

I do miss Thai food.  I'd go back for the food alone.

Ketchup makes it better. Twinkies

Enjoy Phuket JNM, but... isn't it hot? How do you handle the humidity?!

It is hot, and would not have been my choice.

We avoid the mid-day sun and mostly do morning and evening activities.  The sea breeze is nice, though the waves are a bit wild for swimming.

CNN ranks

#1 Thai curry
#8 Thai Tom yum soup
#23 Italian lasagna
#26 Mexican fajitas
#43 Mexican tacos

These all make my top-50 list.

BUT,... many others of theirs are downright silly imo.

Nothing Chinese? No Russian borscht? No Hungarian goulash or chicken paprikash with dumplings? No Greek dishes? No Indian curry? Nothing French except croissant? No Texas t-bone or chili? No Louisiana gumbo?

Yet there is American donuts on the list? ... Ugh.

Time to die. *heart attack*

Tom Yum Koung, man! Not Tom Yum Pa, not Tom Yum Kai. The koung is important :-)

Koung = shrimp

Pa = fish (virtually always tilapia)

Kai = chicken

And doughnuts are delish. There were some strange ones to be sure. Potato chips? I'll take an Alberta T-bone over any cut of meat.

I disapprove of lists like this as they encourage the Millennial 'it's just your opinion, all cultures have equal value' brigade. an invidual's taste in food is completely subjective but it is often brought up as an example in a discussion about whether there can be any objective quality in art forms.  E.g. I don't like Marmite, therefore it isn't good and my opinion is as valid as anyone elses =  the same as 'I don't like Shakespeare/Michelangelo/Mozart, therefore it isn't good and my opinion is as valid as anyone else's. Yes people will accuse me of reading too much into this and it's just a bit of fun but it's drip drip effect.  There's no real discussion here, just 'I like marmite', 'well I don't. '

A statistic e.g. 'Britain's favourite flavour of crisp is salt and venegar' would be more interesting.

They hit a lot of good ones, but missed many as well, like Chinese: red roast pork shoulder, French: bouillabaisse, Italian: cioppino, Greek: moussaka, stifado, dolmathes, Thai:pad krapow...

I remember the old debate between Chicago and New York pizza.

Then I went to NY and tasted the thin, flimsy cheap **** they sell all over and have been a bit cynical of hyped food since.

Fish & chips in London? It's as greasy and gut-wrenching as it is anywhere.

Blah.

One of the great things about Thai food is all the combinations and how open it is to make it your own. Rather than side dishes, condiments create modifications that fit your preferences.

What makes tom yum, like any soup, is the liquid portion.

You obviously didn't go to the right NY pizza joint...

But I'm with you; NY thin crust pizza does nothing for me. It's little better than the tortilla crust pizza you get at some places here.

When faced with a choice between Chicago and New York pizza...

I'm gonna choose the former every time.  Love that deep dish~

But pizza is pizza.  Unless it's tasteless cardboard garbage, I'm not super particular on the thickness of the crust.

Pizza is a lot like sex; even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

That's a downright agreeable list.

One of the few things I'd contest, even as a ragingly patriotic Brit, is Shepherd's pie. It's not exactly a masterpiece. Oh, and American donuts? They're worse than Korean donuts!
