Universal Translator. We're probably 10-20 years from it being integrated into your phone and allowing near-instant translation for at least languages that are in the same language family from one to another. From there it will do some Bluetooth what have you so all you have to wear is an earpiece.


Yep - I also think it's a bit odd that they can't come up with a decent translator for languages which are NOT in the same language family.  There are ways of programming various contexts - so that AI could determine which pronouns are being used (in case of Korean, for example).  You can see this tech being used in google speech recognition technology - when you say a sentence, it first spells out things based on sound and then corrects them via sentence recognition data.  At some point, decent programmers and linguists will unite and there will be no particular need for foreign language learning.
