Title: Why won't anyone sit next to me on the subway? ;_;
Post by: yfb on September 11, 2015, 01:49:35 PM
http://koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/opinon/2015/09/137_186584.html

tl;dr: English teacher sits on the subway and asks the Koreans in English why they sit next to him only after all the other seats get filled up, gets surprised when they don't answer him in English. The things he asks are cringeworthy

Quote
"Hi," I said, "my name is Lawrence McCook. I am an American, and I ride this subway to and from work every day. Can I ask why you decided to sit next to me?"

He crossed his arms in front of his chest. "Sorry, no English," he said.

Quote
"Aren't you afraid the big bad waygook is going to eat you?" I asked.

''No Englishee!" she exclaimed, embarrassed, she spent the rest of the trip with her head buried in her cell phone.

This whole article is idiotic even by Korea Times's standards. It's Jon Huer quality!

Bonus: Compare the pic in the article with this (http://www.westwarwickpd.org/Potter%20-%20Sex%20Offender.html). Hmmm....

Lawrence McCook. If that is the real name of the guy and this article depicts his actions well, I wouldn't like to sit next to some dude either that suddenly starts interrogating me as to why I sat next to him, nevertheless in a different language (xenophobia will of course make this aspect even worse).
Next time a person should just answer "I don't want to sit next to you, get over yourself."

Looking at the dude though, it's no wonder no one sits next to him. He looks like a skinhead in a society where people who look like him are depicted as violent thugs. Not saying he is, but he's definitely on the wrong part of the planet to think that people will take positively to his appearance...

"In this day and age, being a young, attractive Korean girl who can't speak English is unlikely. Obviously she could have tried speaking with me. Who knows, maybe she would have discovered that we had more in common, maybe gotten to know me and, who knows, we could have been soul mates. She will never know."

I vomit.

Hmmmm.....  Something smells fishy here.  If the guy is actually a sex offender from Rhode Island by the name of Kevin Potter, why would they use his mugshot in the article?  Would he seriously not have another photo?  Also, how were you able to look up this guy's record unless you already knew the guy?

Someone's trolling someone....

It's so odd.

The picture of a sex offender as byline. The bizarre name. Some obviously weird quotes.

Quote
I am a handsome American man.

Seriously, everybody right click the picture and search google for the picture. The result is fantastic.

I think the editors at the KT have discovered mescaline. It's the only explanation for what they have been publishing of late.

Given the link provided with this guys picture, this article can't be real. And it would explain the junk produced by the Koreantimes recently, published solely in order to provoke strong opinions and stir up a hornet's nest. Probably not a bad idea since the goal would presumably be more readership, not excatly publishing interesting and informative articles worth reading.

And if this was real, I would imagine any of those Koreans who did sit next to him will  hesitate to do so again in the future. And who could blame them!?

And Korea times has done it yet again!

Wasn't it just a few days ago we had that xenophobic discrimination article? Now this? The complete opposite yet still troll, well done. Now we have a sex offender in a different name in one really wacky possibly not even true article. What in the world is the story with this article this time? Is it made up? Why is this picture in this article. Korea times Manse~!

That's nothing. On a couple of occasions an Ajumma who I sat next to actually moved to the next seat to sit next to a Korean as soon as a space became available. And I'm not talking about those people who like to get an end of row seat, this was in the middle of the row. I've got used to being the last one to be sat next to by now but I did think that was a little rude. I told a young Korean woman about the not sitting next to foreigner on the subway ritual and she came out with the old excuse about not wanting to have to speak English. Like Koreans or anyone for that matter are always striking up conversations with strangers on subway cars.

i really can't work out if this is just some elaborate troll or if this guy is really just creepy as hell. if it is some kind of troll/satire it's waaay too subtle. i appreciate subtlety in satire but at the end of the day it still needs to be recognizable as satire, and his blog and that korea times article aren't really.

there are some hints like using the picture of a sex offender (if you google image search "male sex offender" that picture comes up in the first line, at least for me) and calling himself a handsome American. but at the same time, plenty of weirdos here in korea.

Koreans don't want to sit next to foreigners because they are afraid of foreigners talking to them. He helps them realize their fears every time.
I hope the next Korean who sits beside him is not a cult member who is thrilled to share their beliefs with him or a drunk nationalist who goes on a rant about evil Americans and Japanese. Those are usually the people who want to talk to me on the subway.

Really? I don't buy that one. Generally I imagine almost no-one wants some total stranger on the subway to start taking to them but at least if it's a foreigner you'd have the immediate excuse that you don't speak English to fall back on. Is a random foreigner statistically more likely to start talking to a Korean on a subway car than another Korean?

Koreans don't want to sit next to a foreigner on the subway for the same reason that a UK citizen wouldn't have wanted to sit next to a black person back in the 1950s.

To me it's kind of funny. A friend and I have made a game of it. We would sit on opposite seats and wait for the train to fill up until there is one seat left on either side of us. The winner is the guy that has seats on either side of him taken. You'll be surprised at the confused look on some of the commuters faces trying to figure out which one of the two foreigners is the lesser evil.

I guess for me there are two evils in this country when it comes to foreigners and seats.
1.  The Korean that tries to not sit next to you because you are a foreigner.
2.  The Korean that tries to sit next to you because you are a foreigner.

I would pick the former.  It is far better to be feared or ignored than to be bugged and used as free English practice.

In the apology, first they say it's the market that will determine their content, then they say that they have standards. It's a lot of circular reasoning.  Any good newspaper should have editors with guidelines and some kind of oath concerning journalistic integrity.
The magic market is an "unforced consensus that forms and dissolves."  So the market is to blame, not a person who read and ran this story?  This is corporate personhood where no one takes responsibility and the Korean Times becomes an irresponsible joke.

Fine, they should have better vetting, but they should also distinguish between garbage and good articles.  They just wanted to believe the guys story because they are obsessed with articles about foreigners.  They should not only vet to see if the guy is who he says he is, but they should also ask whether this is a real issue for foreigners and a worthy story which it is not.

The Korean Times also said the will use law enforcement in the future.
They want to shift the blame onto the guy who was making a valid point.

"We believe that our paper is the result of a partnership between those who make it and the readers. We know we can't exist without the support of the readers, as they can always move to another seller of news"

"As with any market, those ideas are valued, accepted or discarded by an unforced consensus that forms and dissolves, with the readers being the ultimate judge."

"By no means would we succumb to the cowardly act by this prankster and change our open-door policy toward any ideas and suggestions, unless they are found to be very offensive to others by the standards of race, sex, religion and culture"

.

Lurch,

I hope that was sarcasm, as the editor's "letter" was a troll in itself (Our dear l(r)eader).

Oh Young-jin is a nationalist bigot.  "Letters to the editor" are blocked, if he doesn't agree with the content, like writing the truth about the "Treaty on basic relations between Korea and Japan" of 1965.

As others have mentioned, how is plagiarism a mistake?

A spelling error is a mistake, but blatantly copying other's work and passing it off as your own, is NOT.

Moreover, the fact that she has been writing for the paper for a few years makes her act of plagiarism that much worse, yet Oh Young-jin believes it makes it excusable.

Really?  Isn't it the other way around in the really world?

If it were her first letter, ignorance could be an excuse.

Doesn't the fact that she has written dozens of pieces place her in a position of "she should have known better"?

Is it a coincidence that people here were talking about trolling the Korea Times a few days before that article appeared?

time to start trolling the Korea Times, it's been done a couple of times, one I recall was a love letter to Jon Huer signed by the real name of Vanilla Ice (Van Winkle or something).

wonder if this one is a troll based on the reedit and plagiarism stuff, when will the KT ever get it?

Korean Times will soon realize there is a tribe of ESL teachers living in their midst who don't take kindly to xenophobia...

Also we have all this extra time on our hands... Well we have SOME extra time on our hands...

Post by: VanIslander on October 22, 2015, 11:41:01 PM
I have travelled from Sokcho in Gangwon province to Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang province to Seoul to Wando in South Jeolla province to Chuncheon to Changwon to Jeonju to Daegu to Gwangju to a ton of other places BY INTERCITY BUS from 2002 to 2008 (when I bought my Korando jeep) and I can tell you that almost always THE VERY LAST empty seat on the bus was next to me (the sole waygook on board) and that I LOVED the fact!!!! I am tall with long legs and once the bus departs I gladly had swung my legs into the empty seat's floor space, tilted my head against the window and went lights out.

Wanting a stranger to sit next to you on the subway or intercity bus is stranger than the fact that many of us foreigners don't get sat next to.

We clearly look different, are foreign, and travelling on public transit isn't most people's dream opportunity to connect with strangers, whether you're in Seoul, L.A. or Rome.

THE END.

I will often go straight to the back of the bus if it's available. I do this because I don't feel the pressure of giving up my seat to the older people when they get on the bus. Usually, the older people will not even venture back there so I can ride in comfort. As far as who sits next to me, I couldn't give a shit. Although, I would prefer an empty seat next to mine. If a Korean decides to take a seat elsewhere, I'm not hurt, I'm grateful.

Yeah, I personally like/prefer it when a random person doesn't sit next to me on public transportation.

Wow, really? I guess we're very different people.

I usually burst onto the bus roaring "한국말 잘 해요. 김치 너무 좋아요".

If the bus doesn't immediately burst into a "ONE OF US, ONE OF US" chant while clambering to sit beside me then I feel cold and empty inside.

I guess for me there are two evils in this country when it comes to foreigners and seats.
1.  The Korean that tries to not sit next to you because you are a foreigner.
2.  The Korean that tries to sit next to you because you are a foreigner.

I would pick the former.  It is far better to be feared

Its not really fear though.. its sociopathic racism.

"I need to feel extra special at all times so I will boost my narcissistic ego and soothe my inferiority complex by acting as if that foreigner is less than human, because he is a vulnerable visitor to my world and I can act like the miserable toxic passive-aggressive person I really am with impunity"

When we try to interact with Koreans: cuktural exploration. When they try to interact with us: sociopathic racism.

looks like someone lacks basic cognitive abilities. Try re-reading the post from amgoalng

Unless you really regard the following as normal..:-

- Making a show of hesitating at the sight of a foreigner
- Whining to your companion that you don't want to sit next to the foreigner
- Forcing your companion to be the one to sit next to the foreigner
- Baulking when unexpectedly coming across a foreigner
- Needing to be cajolled and encouraged into sitting next to a foreigner
- Getting up and moving to an adjacent seat when a foreigner sits next to you
- Preferring to stand for 30 minutes rather than sit next to a foreigner
- Preferring to stand for hours rather than sit next to or even near a foreigner
- making fun of your companion if they sit next to a foreigner
- sweating, going limp or otherwise showing visible discomfort when seated next to a foreigner
- whispering to your companion about the foreigner in a negative way
- trying to impress your g/f or b/f by making jokes about the foreigner under your breath
- appearing wide-eyed or open-mouthed at the sight of a foreigner
- needing to put down the foreigner in some subtle way in order to overcome the fact that you feel threatened
- needing to stare down the foreigner in order to overcome the fact that you feel threatened

I'd short the heck out of this!

Koreans claim they don't stink, so no sale.

I read your name as Smelly Baguette   and then the chanting part made me laugh

I apologize.

if nobody ever sat next to me i'd be the happiest person

although, i do notice people will immediately move seats if another opens up near them, presumably because they don't want to sit next to me (i can't think of any other reasons why they'd move). shrug

Like many others, I'm thrilled to have the space to myself. A rare commodity here in Seoul!

it's usually on the bus now that no one will sit next to me.  the seat next to me is always the last to get filled.  this bus is always full on the way home.  i've even had people sit down and then look for another seat.  i appreciate the extra space but not going to lie, seems kind of fucked up.  i'm not overflowing into the next seat and i don't smell bad either.  i have wide shoulders but i do my best to keep everything contained to my seat.  maybe i need to shave or something.
might be throwing them off.  balls

Yesterday when I was on the bus someone sat next to me and I immediately thought of this thread. I was sitting in the back corner and there were only about 4 other people in the bus. The person in question sat directly next to me. Also, I've never had the "people don't sit next to me problem" but I really hope I don't develop a "people always sit too close to me" problem.

i actually hate this the most.  all the empty seats and you chose the one i was sitting in?!  it's like going to the bathroom and there are 20 empty urinals and someone decides to post up right next to you.  just...no

It provides a sense of closeness, the Koreans call it Uri (우리).

It also allows for a larger group to sit together.

If there is a row of 6 seats, with one person at each end, sitting next to one of them allows a group of 3 to sit together.

:)

I just hope nobody sits close to me on a subway...when there are other openings...please don't take a crap next to me when there are 10 other toilets open...if it is all full I understand...same goes for especially urinals and hand washing stations...

Seriously. I can't imagine too many Seoulites complaining about having extra space on the bus/subway.
