On minimum wages in Canada:

My socialist cousin (who I love, don't get me wrong, he's a great guy) recently linked to an article on Facebook that stated with minimum wage at $15/h, and the average rent in Toronto is $2000/month, so poverty.

Does one expect to live an AVERAGE life (in Toronto) at MINIMUM wage (for the province)? Should shop owners in Timmins pay thier high school part-time help enough for a flat at Yonge and Bloor?

It is really hard to have a serious discussion when rediculous numbers are presented like this.

I'm curious how minimum wage would be in Timmins if it was adjusted with productivity. Understandably it is more expensive to live at Yonge and Bloor (poor choice), but maybe the minimum in Timmins should be raised from its current provincial level.

Businesses are of course looking to cut costs, but maybe they should be nudged to pay employees more reasonably.

I think I support an age-based minimum wage. The high school student is always cited as why the minimum can't be raised, so cap the high school minimum at 80% the full minimum, or something less than the 18/19+ amount.

I think there are countries that do something like that, but I do not know how effective age-adjusted rates are.

WTF is the point of me coming all the way to my furthest school after exams? Why do I have to spend money to come babysit them? Guess I'm watching the first 45 minutes of Spiderman: Homecoming a lot today.

There is an age based minimum wage in Ontario. When I was there 2 years ago, student min wage was about 9$ and minimum was around 12$. Also take into account that food, especially fruits and vegetables in bigger cities is less. If you go up to Haliburton it's like 10$ for a bag of potatoes that would cost 4$ in the GTA. Since Ontario's big they charge out the butt for shipping products outside of Southern Ontario. My family has a cottage up north and it's crazy expensive if you want produce in the middle of nowhere, so that cost of living is higher while housing is cheaper.

Your school might be providing one for the staff. They might be ordering delivery. Check first.

Those are cottage country prices, not "out of Toronto" prices.

It is picnic day. So it is just me and the security guard in the entire school. Well, I can't find anyone else. I really need to find someone else. I went for a wee walk outside on the track and the security guy is really quite upset that I am here, telling me over and over again that there are no students, asking why I am here and getting very frustrated with me even I am trying to tell him I have to be here in the little Korean that I can manage. He also has just gone round and locked all the doors except the one entrance at the kindi. I'm just going to sit here in my classroom now and not move. Which sucks because I was going to go to the CU store for lunch, but it seems it would be safer to remain where I am in case I get locked out or something.

Yeah, I totally would've found something to eat, that was never a worry.

But I checked and yes, there is lunch for the teachers. Was kinda looking forward to sneaking off for some forbidden food, though.

No, it can stay open, but from now on try to only complain about things that are worse than anything anyone else in the world is dealing with.

Is there someplace you can order food from?  Sounds like a good excuse for delivery, if possible!
