Koreans don't greet in the workplace
« on: January 11, 2018, 10:06:15 PM »
Westerners place a high importance on daily greetings. Why don't Koreans?

Even if you say nothing else to a person all day, you should at least say Hello and goodbye every day to your co-workers. This simple act of touching bases helps to create a positive atmosphere which is helpful in the workplace. Not to do so creates a sort of tension, which is why some Korean workplaces feel so uptight.

But Koreans don't seem to care about it.

Numerous times they will simply act like the other person doesn't exist, or ignore the greeting. Particularly if it is a foreigner. Is this really Korean culture? They think you lose something by acknowledging the other person?

Catch my drift?

That's odd. At my workplace, popping in to the staff room to say hello and goodbye is quite important.

yes, I am with Arabin, at my old workplace we always had to stop in at my boss' office to say goodnight. At my current workplace, even when we enter the cafeteria, we greet the other teachers as we enter. But also, if they are higher ranking than you, they don't have to necessarily say anything, they can just give a gesture or a nod and that is fine in Korean culture.

Of the OPs last 15 posts, four of them have been to start a thread complaining about Korea or Koreans.  From Why is Korea so stressful to Koreans and blind corners, this poster is the definition of a troll.  Stop feeding him.

You see, I just thought my CT was just being a dick about it, not saying hello or goodbye (50% of the time), and occasionally ignoring my farewell. I asked my wife for her opinion of CT's attitude, and she agreed, dickish.   I think you have experienced people who are just rude, not a 'Korean culture' artifact.  In support of that, a large majority of the other teachers in my school and other schools in the past have greeted me or replied when I did.

Maybe they just don't like you.

Pretty much. What a nutjob.

I agree in part with the OP, there are a handful of teachers at my school that just can't be bothered, although most are okay.

The truth is that for many Koreans, it is uncomfortable for them to have a foreigner in their presence.
Since Korean culture dictates that strangers mean nothing to them...well then you have a recipe
for rudeness.

Now you're playing the victim

Here are some more ideas for some threads so you can vent.

Why don't Koreans worship the very ground I walk on?
Why am I not special in Korea?
Why don't Koreans just do everything they can to please me?
Why are Korean customs different to my home country?
Why can't I adapt at all to the host country I choose to live in?

My workplace isn't like this at all. There are greetings and farewells daily. In fact, even at my shadiest of jobs here, they at least greeted me and said goodbye. This just sounds strange. Maybe they just don't like you....

Um, as I noted, it’s not ONE thread. It’s a series of whiny “Korea is terrible” posts that for the most part are baseless, like this one.

And telling people to ignore these posts is not really an attack.

If I posted "Korea is very friendly and welcoming to outsiders" then I still would've been attacked, probably by all the same trolls now posing as guardians of daehan minguk. Only they would've been claiming the opposite: that some Koreans are snobby when it comes to talking to foreign coworkers.

The fact is, people like to act contrary. They like to take the adverse position to whatever has been stated.

The first wave of respondents to any post is inevitably made up of reflexive contrarians attacking the OP. No matter what you post, you will prompt an avalanche of people arguing the opposite.

Surely anyone who posts threads will have noticed this phenomenon.

Koreans always greet each other at the work place even sometimes with a hug or handshake.

Maybe you coworkers find you stuck up and hating on korea too much.

Do they always greet foreigners? is the question.
