Maps of Korea/wilderness classes
« on: April 16, 2018, 08:37:05 AM »
Hi all,

Does anyone know where to buy a map of Korea at a reasonable cost?  Link?
The ones on Gmarket are ridiculously priced and ebay does not ship to Korea.

Also, are there any wilderness survival classes offered in Korea?  Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

I've heard detailed maps are hard to come by as a hang over from the days of being scared of Nork spies using them for...whatever. Infiltration of some sort.

I bought a 1m by about 80cm Uri Nara titled map from YP books in Jongno. It is in English. It hangs on my wall. Though I've noticed that they drew the border with North Korea north of Kaesong. Which is wrong. It's not like they are denying the border exists, they just put it in the wrong place.

You can buy large (1mx1m) laminated maps of Korea in most book stores, and in many stationary stores. The one in my town has several: one done up in a cartoony style with little pictures of regional specialties interspersed between the cities etc. The all sell for about 10,000 to 15,000 won.

I hear that the Korean military offers fairly comprehensive wilderness survival, but other than that, you're totally in the wrong country for it. There is no place in South Korea that doesn't boast at least moderately good cell coverage, nor is there any place more than an hour away from line-of-sight to civilization. There's literally no need for wilderness survival skills here.

They probably included Takeshima in their map as well.
