I found out today that some students at my middle school have complained about teachers cutting in the lunch line and eating first. Today, the vice principal was in the cafeteria talking to students as we teachers cut in line.  There is also a sign that reminds students that teachers eat first.

Mine have to get physical authorisation before they can enter anything (for their trips and my own). They get grilled by the head-teacher and/or VP about it.

Depending on the teacher they have to make lots of trips up and down stairs.
THIS!!!

It is seems so defeatist to have this online system when so many can't let go of the old way of doing things.

Anyone know of any other reason for it to be done in that way (seeking prior approval, before submitting)?

I assume it's just the cultural hierarchy thing.  My coT and I would go together to ask the principal permission for special things like my vacation dates.  He was super chill though; my coT said she was sure everything was fine but that it was just the polite thing to do.

But for basic requests like just going to a travel school? I just have to request approval from the head teacher via NEIS.  We don't bother the principal over something so minor as that.  (If we did, we'd be bothering him thrice a week)

I get why people do their own NEIS, I do my own for the things that I repetitively do, I know who to add, and the other bits.

I also get why some teachers have to go to the VP to check if it is ok.  What is the point of writing out a whole NEIS thing and surprising the VP/P and for them to decline it?  Holidays? Ok.  Most of my VPs have no idea about the ins and outs of my contract.  So my co-t will go and say that I'm going to take x amount of days.  He'll say ok.  My co-teacher explains I have 18 days + 5 extra for renewing, so it's all possible.  If there is anything done wrong it is his name that'll be drawn into it, and it could affect promotion.  I shouldn't just be able to make my own NEIS with all my vacation dates on it and then just send it to the Co-T/Department head/VP and P.  In an ideal world, yes, but in Korea, it doesn't work like that.  To my mind there is no feedback part for NEIS, if it is done wrong then the VP has to come and find the teacher to tell them to submit again and deleting it is a bit of a hassle.  I get the feeling, I contradicted myself in this post, but I can't be bothered going back and re-reading it.

They should be happy they are even getting food! My school didn't even feed the students who came to (a closed) school today. The cafeteria only prepared food for the teachers.

I'm so done with work and Korea in general, I want to just sleep until my contract is up.

Same. Seven more weeks.

I'm pretty bummed about this whole subscription/paywall thing. I don't get much in the way of positive feedback at work, neither from my coworkers nor from my students, so the positive responses I get in here when I upload the materials I create is often the only indication I have that my efforts are worth it.

I can't in good conscience keep my content on this site knowing that people will have to pay to access it, knowing that my original intent was to share it freely with my fellow teachers. I just finished going through all of the topics I've started in the lesson plan/template section and removing all of the attachments, and doing so was a real downer.

While I was doing it, I saw a comment I made in one of the threads in response to someone thanking me for my efforts. It mentioned the "warm fuzzies" I get from knowing I did a good job and that my efforts are helpful an appreciated. Now I can not longer get that here, and that's genuinely unfortunate.

man that's harsh. it sounds like a power trip thing from the P and/or VP. "you must come and beg and bow deeply for your time off".

my school is huge, there's like 50 teachers here. i think the P and VP would have an endless stream of teachers coming into and out of their office if they had to get in-person approval for everything.

at my school we are only made to grovel if we want to take a whole day off sick (even if we don't have any classes), or if we have to miss class for some reason.

I always line up with the students. It sets an example, and lining up is something that needs to be installed in society here. If teachers can cut in line what message does that send?

What are you even talking about? Lining up is obviously instilled in the students if you line up with them. Who cares if a few teachers get to cut in before the students? It's not like the lunch ladies run out of food or the students don't have enough time to eat.

I don't see how this is a issue.

If teachers can cut in line what message does that send?

it sends the message that what's actually needed is a separate line at that school for teachers and students.

it also sends the message that teachers are to be respected, and that teachers shouldn't kowtow to the whims and demands of students. teachers in SK have already lost almost all respect with the students due to a number of things, mainly the fact that students now think they have authority over the teachers, and that the teachers must acquiesce to their every desire.

let the teachers eat first, it's basically the last bastion of authority that many are holding on to.

I always line up behind the students but they always insist I go ahead of them.

I went on a nice trip this weekend but one of the people who went would not shut up. I donít understand people who feel the need to vocalize every thought and make everything about them. I spent the whole weekend with that chatty Cathy, and at school my coteacher still wonít stop talking eithe.  After each class she giggles and says, ďI think I talk too muchĒ but she wonít stop. She knows her constant blathering is a problem but nothing changes. And Iím so done with her ďKorea is the best!Ē attitude. I donít want to wish away the time I have left, and Iím going to try and enjoy my last six months here, but Iím ready to be gone.

Just had my G3 class at my main school (middle school).
They are really friendly to me outside of class time, but during class, 3 of the girls want to participate, the other girls + the boys, don't want to do anything in class and are super rowdy.
Today, I was trying to get them to quieten down, to no avail. Asked my co-T politely for help, who looked up, shrugged, told me I'm not allowed to do any form of discipline, and then went back to her phone games. She snapped at me when I tried doing the for every 1 min of my time you waste, I'll waste a minute of your time. Team based point system hasn't worked.

After class, she had a long talk with me about me needing to control the students better, even though she admits that she can't do it in her own class. She said they all hate studying, and so are like this in every class. Every other class I have this year is okay. >.<

But how can you lead by example when you're standing in the back?

I thought Paypal didn't even work well in Korea...?

I don't mind the idea of a subscription, but I do wish major contributors would have received a personal warning even three days before- "Hey, we're doing this, please move your content offsite so you can have unrestricted access." This is stealing, yo.

I went on a nice trip this weekend but one of the people who went would not shut up. I donít understand people who feel the need to vocalize every thought and make everything about them. I spent the whole weekend with that chatty Cathy...

I feel you. A friend from high school came to visit me in China and she talked so much, so long, and so loudly that I lost my voice just trying to keep up and I ended up having to take a day off work after she left because I was physically exhausted from all the talking.

Not talking wasn't even an option. I'd tell her we were changing or taking a nap, and she'd shout through the door. Ditto for showering, pooping, etc.

If you are sharing a small space and/or the majority of your time with someone, HECK OFF OCCASIONALLY!

This has been bugging me for a while. It's not a rant. It's more a confused question: why, for the love of Mike, would someone use the recycle bin as a storage folder?!

On-line retailers that allow you to proceed through the cyber-security maze to get your card authorized before telling you that item is on back-order, tying up your credit limit until who knows when.

The kids are forcing me to go full-tyrant today. I get that it's still early in the week, but this isn't Monday, folks. I gotta say that they're a little more quick to respond to my demands, though. The fear spreads. I am The Ahjumma.

Also, I lost a little bit of patience with a male teacher last week. I didn't blow up at him, but I didn't bother to hide my irritation, either, which he fully and completely deserved, and everyone knows it. Didn't stop him from trying to snub me this morning, though. Not really too sure why he would think I give any fucks about him, especially given how rude he was to me on Friday, but I'm going to be all sugar and spice while he continues to make an ass out of himself. Even in Korea with very few people willing to openly admit to it, shit coming from anyone still stinks, and they'll wrinkle their noses at it all the same even if you force them to do it on the sly.

Come in to work feeling , it's a beautiful fall day.

CT: DMZ teacher, Mr. Kim's father passed away yesterday. ㅠㅠ

ME: That's too bad. I remember he mentioned that his father wasn't doing well.

CT: Yes, and tonight all the teachers will visit his house. Can you come?

Me: (I have no other plans. How long could this take, right?) Sure. Where is it?

CT: Good, we will take Ms. Jo's car. His house is in Gyeongju. (We're in Ulsan ~ 1hour away)

Me: (arghhhhhh) OK...

New mood:  >:( >:( >:(

Guess the mods don't want us voicing our dissatisfaction about the change anymore. Will doing so here in the ranting thread be met with warnings/mutes?

haha, yeah, really.

again, they probably didn't close it to try and aggrevate everyone, but stuff like that would make me even less inclined to pay
