I see a particular 6th grade class twice a week and gave them some very light homework for today. Assuming they could get away with it, almost half the class didn't do it. I wasn't having any of that, especially since the students who did do it put effort into their work.

Usually, I'd give them a sentence to write out (I must do my homework etc.). However, it seems like this is the same as normal homework they get from Korean English teachers, who have nary the understanding nor the comprehension to mark anything other than spelling or simple grammar.
This semester, I decided to make them actually think while doing punishment and dread doing it in the future, I gave them 60 trisyllabic words to write out.

I explained what a trisyllabic word was and gave two examples. Furthermore, I give punishment as homework, not classwork, since I want them to pay attention to the lesson... Except one student, who I'll get to in a bit, who was rude on top of not doing his homework, he got 100.
The students immediately began protesting that they didn't know what it was etc.
By a show of hands, I asked students to show if the owned a smartphone, computer and/or had internet access (all hands went up). "Right", I said, "You can use your computers and smartphones for something other than gaming and Kakao, and find trisyllabic words in online dictionaries".
I didn't want to spell out that you could simply put "trisyllabic words" in Naver and get a list.

After class, one kid claims he's already done his and shows me his book with hundreds of random English words written, in no discernible order, most of which were not trisyllabic. I can't believe how spoilt, entitled and useless these kids can be, when given a task that requires thought and initiative. Punishment is supposed to be unpleasant.

But you're saying you had to go into a bathroom and insert something into your own anus?

They gave me a long Q-tip attached to a lid, with a small bottle for it to be screwed on to and asked me to swab the inside of my asshole. I was expecting at least a handicapped bathroom like we would get when asked to do a piss test at home, but nope. Just a tiny stall, me, the Q-tip and the love of Christ. Still, I'd take this over a doctor doing it for me. No need for two people to be degraded.

Thankfully, I was mentally prepared for it since a fellow waygook teacher warned me. I still have no idea why I haven't done it since or why it is apparently making a come back.

Conversely, the reward system here seems nuts to me. No skin off my back usually since my co-ts are mostly in charge of that but I do periodically give out sweets for a job well done/completed work.

In the moment I'm like, "Yay, they're happy because they got chocolate!" but after class I realize how bizarre it is to get candy for making an effort in class.

Not really upset, just mystified. I had class with the crazy kid from yesterday who attacked and broke my teachers desk over his phone. He was totally fine now, waved to me, said "Hi teacher!!" and carried on with his business. He had gotten no punishment even though he cussed me out and damaged school property. How can the school not punish him? That isn't the sort of behavior that is ok. Yet... it is?

I left two weeks ago, but after 7 1/2 years in the land of kimchi smiles, I'm having a hard time breaking the habit of checking in to see what everyone is arguing about on waygook.

Et tu, Jackson? You're gone? Paul stopped posting nearly a month ago. I haven't seen Johnny Russian in ages. Agent Michael Scarn left no trace after the Brexit( :cheesy:). Khavala got rid of his Emilio Esteves profile pic. Tamjen cut out I don't know how many months ago. TeresaD's husband with the Weird Al pic is nowhere to be found. NomadicMadda is running off to school. We're left here to fend for ourselves among the "eating dog in korea," "sh*t talkers," and "trouble among coworkers" threads that just won't die...

*I nearly forgot to mention the longstanding feud between warring factions now working itself out in full public view on the "korean shooting medals" thread.

What got me was when one of the very last students to show up asked me if he could go get a drink of water as soon as sat down.

This drives me insane. You're already late, just drink some water or piss before you come to my class. I'm not going to be more mad that you're 8 mins late versus 6 mins late.

DERP

Please understand their situation. They have only been told no when it comes to not studying English. Everything else is ok. After all, the parents and the teachers already feel bad about that.

Don't forget we tragically lost our favourite crazy conspiracy theorist Kliuchevskoi a few weeks ago. Times are hard indeed. Scarn's still around though.

I'm pretty sure Kliuchevskoi has been reborn as Aurata. The guy with the cat as his pic.
Either that or there are two pathologically pro-Russian nut bars roaming around Korea.

This does explain the lack of good entertainment on the forums these days, I was hoping everyone was just on vacation!!!

TeresaD's husband was banned immediately from waygook, apparently on a 15% warning... 15% warning and then BOOM!!! Gone!

Sooooo the routine teacher medical exam I just did now includes anal probing. It wouldn't have even been so terrible if my coteacher spoke English. I didn't understand which hole they wanted me to shove it in

This has been phasing in and out for years. When I first arrived in Osan in 2012 and did my medical check, they handed me a Q-tip and told me to have at it (in a public restroom too, how gauche). Subsequent years in other cities (Seoul and Yongin) didn't require that at all.

I don't know what they were looking for in 2012 but they sure as hell didn't find it up my ass.

What in the actual ****? What are they looking for UP OUR ASSES?

I have an upcoming medical exam. I am now slightly uneasy...

Sorry but there must be a misunderstanding here somewhere.

I assumed you meant the doctor wanted to check your prostate which is pretty normal if you're in one of the high risk age groups.

But you're saying you had to go into a bathroom and insert something into your own anus?

Let's get back to this anal probe thing? Not sure I would actually do it. I would just give them back the clean Q-tip claiming religious reasons......  Also I asked a nurse friend and she said she knew it to be used to test for anal gonorrhea.   :blank:

Yeah I gave a very feeble attempt and I don't actually think the test will produce any results.  I don't know if they'll let it go or make me redo it.. in which case I'd get to miss more school which wouldn't be the worst thing ever.  Though I don't feel like discussing it with my coteacher any more than I already had to.

Lol, I read this and looked over at my CT and thought "not ever ever having that discussion with her" NEVAH EVAH!!! Awkward. Very very awkward!!! But keep us updated on your anal adventures, I am sure it will help the rest of us prepare for possible uncomfortable encounters. (I wonder if only foreign teachers have to have the anal probe?)

Also I just talked to a friend who also renewed and her exam didn't include the anal probing, so it must just be the weird hospital I went to.

I really don't understand what the exam is for.  The day before I went to the immigration office and got that all sorted, so who even looks at my health results?  They're being mailed to my school.

So. Over the weekend I went for a walk among the rice fields behind my apartment to photograph the local wildlife.

While doing so I slipped off the edge of the tiny little rice-field dike and rather than fall flat on my face in 10 cm of the most disgusting sludge imaginable, I fell in the opposite direction. Unfortunately for me, growing in the opposite direction were rows and rows of cultivated rose-bush-like plants with inch long thorns all of which immediately found delicate places in which to embed themselves before breaking off. After enduring a pretty thorough laughing-at, I made it home and spent a good 20 minutes with tweezers yanking the sodding things out.

Of course, two days later, all the teeny tiny little stab wounds have become infected (and yeah, I did douse them with iodine when I got home).

Anybody know anything about this plant so I can name it to the doctor when I go visit her this evening? It's about 2 meters tall, shrubby, has little fruit thingies that look a bit like small, unripe jube jubes, and has big ******* thorns that break off super duper easily.

Here's a pic (zoom in to admire the thorns just below the spider!).

First day back at school after vacation. Computer memory roasted over the break, so they replaced it and downgraded me to a barely functional 2gigs.

I was just informed of the mandatory 회식 today at 5:20pm. At 11am on the day of said 회식. I really wouldn't mind the free food if there were just more warning.

Apparently the minor drop in air temperature means no more air conditioning this year.

None of it surprises me anymore, but it's still infuriating.

Ouch, sorry to hear this happened to you. :(

The name of that plant is the jujube tree (called 대추 in Korean). The berries are used for herbal tea.

And as an FYI to anyone else, I could be wrong, but I think that spider is Korea's native banana spider (they are venomous to humans, but they're also extremely passive and rarely bite -- I don't think the bites are venomous enough to cause death, either, but they're supposed to hurt like hell).

I know the anal probe health check is the cheaper one that restaurant staff have to get. They do that instead of blood tests etc and it is really cheap compared to the full one.

Personally I prefer to pay for the full one :)

after a bit of research it seems the q-tip anal test is for either gonnorhea (like someone mentioned) or Strep B during pregnancy.
