i left korea a year and 3 months ago, my husband left Korea 9 months ago.  And all i've heard him do since he arrived in China is bitch about how great Korea was.  Sure it was.  He had a job he hadn't had a raise in four years, no vacation, no benefits, no pension.  He had a wife who chaufferred him around even though he knew how much she hated driving, and especially hated driving in Korea.  And a workplace who thinks he's God.  Now, he has a job with vacation, pension, more money, cheaper and newer apartment.  But he gripes about how great Korea is and how horrible China is.  Me, the loving wife, hated Korea 6 of the 8 years she lived there.  But I stayed there for him until my job was cut.  i hated driving, i hated buying insurance and gas (of which he contributed little). I felt like i was in prision, with korea's isolationist policies.  i come to Beijing and yes there is pollution, but i feel freer.  I have access to things that I didn't have access to in Korea. There are more interesting things to do.  I get paid more.  I feel more useful in my job. I DONT drive anywhere...I commute but I enjoy the commute.  I make more money and have more vacation.  My quality of life is better here. My husband doesn't cough like he used to in Korea, which makes me wonder how polluted our city really was because he used to cough all the time.  I am SICK of listening to my husband tell me how GREAT Korea was.  i am ready to ship him back there and leave me alone.   Just now he said he missed the old bed.  I said why? It gave me backaches.  He said 'because it was in Korea.' ARGH.

Yikes.

Went to the dentist yesterday. Got a standard cleaning/X-ray. Proudly whip out my little health insurance card/ARC and they tell me my visit isn't covered because I'm "not Korean." What the ever-loving heck?

So what happened? That's categorically false - if you're paying into the national health care plan, then you're covered, unless you've already somehow used your quota of free cleanings, etc. Although I don't think X-rays are covered. Maybe they are? I'm not sure.

But yeah - tell them to shove it with the 'not Korean' biz.

It was my first cleaning I'd had with my insurance. My limited Korean and their limited English meant I had to pay so now I've *sigh* tattled to my coteacher so hopefully she can help. What a bogus and completely trite experience. YOU ARE DIFFERENT AND THEREFORE YOU MUST PAY.

Just had an enormously frustrating moment. Asked my Grade 5's if they knew the game hangman. *blank stares*, so I say ok I will show you. I draw one line on the board as the first letter of a word and the students start shouting for the KET, before I have even had a chance to draw the second line.

I hadn't even started to explain. Give me fu--ing 5 seconds man! I told my KET that I didn't need his help and half way through the review I introduced hangman following a process of how do you spell that? Can you guess this word? Tell me the alphabet letters. I draw the hangman as we go. (Which was exactly how I was going to introduce it ANYWAY! One minute tops of showing how the game works and boom, full understanding without any translation in under a goddamn minute).

I am not mad at the students or CT. I am mad at whoever taught these kids that it is okay to scream for a korean translation before even giving the GET time to show anything. I'm mad at spoon feeding.
I'm mad that this school made me do 38 80 minute full lesson plans for the entire year's after school program and had me do it in 2 days. They told me to email it by yesterday lunch, I did. Then get told to send by cool messenger this morning - so I did. Then I get a phone call to say bring it to me on your usb. My usb is in the classroom set up for a lesson in less than 2 minutes. You can just damn wait.  I'm mad at the world!

I am mad that I signed on for another year of this crap. (okay but only because of this school, my other schools are awesome).

I'm grumpy. Overreacting. Maybe I need a snickers.
I can relate.  I had my first afterschool class yesterday, mostly 1st grade middle school.  The topic was prepositions of place (on, over, in front of, behind, etc). I know they learn these in elementary, so I thought this would be an easy review lesson.
A few minutes after the class ends, one of my co-teachers comes to my desk to tell me the students came to her to complain that they could not understand me!
They did the activities and games well.  They did well on the worksheet.
It's the one class I teach alone, and I wonder if they really didn't understand me or if they just panicked because there wasn't a Korean teacher there to translate every word I said.

"Why do you raise your beard?"

I don't know why this is a questions that Koreans ask.  I can kind of understand new students asking this, but I don't know why an adult would (random people in school).

The reason it bugs me so much is because they're never satisifed with the answer I give; "I just like beards".

Yes but what's the reason?
There's no other reason?
Is that really the only reason?

What do you want from me?!!  That I'm on the lam from the police and it's a convenient disguise?  I just like beards!

They've got me doubting myself now.  Why do I have a beard??

You should ask them why they like the same stereotypical Korean haircut that all Korean guys have, big circle shaped glasses, or whatever trend that everyone is participating in at the time, next time.

Around 70,000. Maybe it makes me a ~cheap foreigner~ but it's just the principle of the thing. I would've paid it without thinking if they hadn't said "You are not Korean, your Korean insurance is no good here."

This winter's trend was:

A turtle neck with an extra high neck. A long coat that comes down to about the knee or mid upper leg. A bowl cut. Round glasses (optional). Jeans that are 2 inches too short.

We played a drinking game at a bar one night where we had drink each time one of the aforementioned "Korean Male Winter 2016-17 look" walked into the bar. The bar had to shut down after 90 minutes becuase every drop of alcohol in the bar had been consumed due to the massive influx of bowl cutted, turtleneck wearing dudes.

Today's gripes:

1) The classroom is not the place for sick people. If you're sick, stay home. If your parents/guardians insist you come to school sick, go lay down in the nurse's office. I don't need my whole class getting sick.

2) I wish school cleaning was more like the US here. Yeah, yeah, I know: "This  isn't the US, this is Korea. If you don't like it, go back to the US."But still.

In the US, the schools tend to be cleaned by professional janitors after school hours. That means the schools actually get cleaned, and the cleaning doesn't interfere with anything.

Here, the halls and classrooms are cleaned by the students, and the bathrooms are cleaned by janitors during school hours. That means the halls and classrooms are perpetually dirty, and the janitor is somehow always in the bathroom exactly at the moment I need to pee.

Petty gripes, all things considered, but still. Ugh.

I just disinfected a bunch of shared white boards and markers because there was a student with whooping cough or some shit in the last class who refused to go to the nurse's room even when my CT asked him to.

And I agree, these schools are constantly dirty. Students would drop food and snacks in the hallways at my old school and the mess would stay there for weeks. To add to that,  I can't believe what a horrible state of disrepair my supposed A level school is in. There is dirt and grease on the walls, water damage on the ceilings, crust in every corner and the doors barely open. The wooden banisters are peeling and dangerous to even tough unless you want a cut or a splinter. Perpetually foggy windows. The white boards are so old and stained we can barely write on them.  I don't really get why standards aren't any higher than this. All my friends say their schools are the same. Would it KILL them to hire professional cleaners to take care of these schools?

Did you take your insurance card thing with you? When I got my health coverage I was given this pamphlet like book to take with me when I go to the doctors.

That also shouldn't matter. I used to take that book with me but then eventually I stopped and just giving them your ARC number is sufficient since it's tied to your ARC number, anyways. That dentist sounds like they were just trying to rip you off.

I am SO disappointed in Iron Fist.

I didn't pay any attention to the bad reviews it got, I just knew that critics didn't like it... but I don't really care when it comes to superhero shows/movies. I just like what I like, so I gave it a fair chance! However, it is REALLY painful.

None of Netflix's Marvel shows have been perfect, I mean, the second half of Luke Cage was painful and Jessica Jones/Daredevil all have things they can improve on, but I still liked those shows and those characters. Iron Fist, however, has 0 charm and I could not care less about the story. In fact, I kind of actually dislike the main character. He acts like a pre-teen half the time and the actor has 0 presence on screen. How am I supposed to really believe this guy punched a dragon in the heart when he gets nearly bested in most of his fights with mere mortals? His girlfriend is a more impressive fighter than he is, but I gagged during their sex scene. Not to mention the guy is just straight up ugly. I mean, his hair is AWFUL. Yellow ramen curls COME ON. Not charming, ugly, bad fighter, bad actor... I mean,  I know he's supposed to be a normal person who happens to have this power, but even when he's on his superhero shit he has ZERO superhero swag. His fist power is so lame with no personality to back it up.

The other actors suck too. I was so distracted by Ward's weird and stiff dialogue delivery in the first couple of episodes but at least his character is getting more interesting. Can't say the same for the actual main hero though. What were they THINKING hiring Finn Jones? I liked him well enough as Loras, but someone with an actual personality would have been nice. Oh and someone a little bit easier on the eyes. This guy can't even pull off the beard.

Right, usually just the ARC is needed as it's tied to your coverage. Regardless, I still presented my little book thing and they were like "nope." I hope this can be rectified or imma leave one SCATHING comment on facebook.

Speaking of the random trends that catch on here... does anyone know how that Taiwanese castella places became so popular, or what started that one? When I got back from my vacation in February, there were about 2 per block in my area and surrounding. Now they are already going out of business and moving on to the next thing.

I've only watched one episode and it's already so bad. I don't pay attention to directors or things, but this is making me wonder about it for once. The effects in the other three shows (of which DD was my least fave) were pretty darn good, but this guy when he jumps is just laughable. I have seen Vines that look better.

This doesn't bode well.

I loved Daredevil S1 and thought it was genuinely well shot, written, and acted, and all the characters were nice to look at in their own way. Jessica Jones had some bizarre pacing, and there were times when I was watching it that I thought "This is pretty ehhhhh," but after finishing it, looking at it as a whole, it was really good.

You're spot on with the second half of Luke Cage being awful. I stopped caring about anything that happened and just binged as hard as I could to get it over with.

Daredevil S2 had a lot more schlock than S1, but still, likeable characters, well shot, and mostly fun. Not as good as the first season, but yeah.

I saw a trailer for Iron Fist at the theater before I saw Logan (Netflix advertises in theatres - crafty), and I was kind of like... this looks bad and I don't want to look at this lead character.
