Eating all those carbs will make you fat / insulin resistant. Younger kids don't have to worry about that as much as older adults. Not worth it to eat the school lunches in my opinion. Better to just skip.

Yeah this is what lead me to opting out. I'm no health-nut but god I could not take another triple-carb lunch.

It's true. Skipping a crap meal- not eating- is way healthier. Keeps insulin levels low, which paves the way for fat burning.

Yeah, I remember those days at my public school. Rice, noodles, and breads all in one meal. Holy bananas.

Are Koreans better able to metabolize (simple) carbs? How are they not fat?

So afternoon classes at my school are canceled and I get told to go home... but the next bus comes through here at around 4:20. If they would have just told me an hour ago, I could have caught the 12 o'clock bus during lunch. Ugh...

I'm really tired of seeing this RIDICULOUS picture on Facebook.  Are people just being dicks to their friends in public now?  Not even behind their back, literally to their faces?

I don't know if you know, but there is this site called waygook.org. It's where a bunch of foreigners who are living and teaching English in Korea get together and chat about stuff.
This amazing thing happens there, where if anyone brings up their classroom environment or whatever, they all start getting on their high horses to ride into battle; why I am a better teacher than everyone else.

Yeah, I was going to say; in the years I have been here, the increase of child obesity is absurd. Half the kids in the class could really benefit from this fried chicken scare.

I find it pretty frustrating that Korean students don't know that Spanish is used outside of Spain and think they speak English in South America.  I've encountered this over and over.

Why, when I'm assisting other students, do Korean students think it's okay to yell "TEACHER" at me and get louder and louder as I ignore them?  These are 1st grade middle schoolers.  Shouldn't you know by age 14 or whatever that interrupting people like that is rude as hell?

My students do that too. I've tried to get them to raise their hand quietly, but that was before I learned that my co-teacher was actually telling them to call out to me. It's just what they do here, at least at my school and yours it seems.

My school too. Even the third graders do it. I try to tell them I'll get to them, I haven't forgotten that they need their worksheet checked, but it doesn't help.

The only thing that has helped a little bit is like, when most of the kids finish the worksheet at the same time (when you get the most of this TEACHERRRRR nonsense) I will tell them "First, I'm doing this row. Then I'll check the second row." etc and that seems to get them to calm down a LITTLE bit

People spending their money on travel, I'm sitting here with my shiny new guitar like "Enjoy your dysentery and stolen passport."

I'm ready to be done with traveling. Been ready for a while now. I've found my last several trips to be exhausting and living here in Korea it almost feels like there's some compulsion to go out to another country during vacation time. I hate booking flights. I hate spending huge amounts of money to be stuck in places with huge amounts of people. No matter where you go these days it's hard to get away from the canned tourist experience, to the point where the places themselves feel more like some cheap plastic replica of their own once-defining characteristics. I don't like the sense among many travelers that the world is their playground and nice backdrop to their selfies. I enjoy the sense of discovery, but don't like feeling compelled to cram as much into one day as possible and or the feeling that I can't slow down for fear of missing out on something. Now that I know how terrible air travel is in terms of carbon emissions, there's a guilty sense of burning the path behind me as I romp across the globe in my personal quest for some fleeting sense of fulfillment, and spending thousands of dollars to do so.

The Nepal scenes from Doctor Strange had me averting my eyes in embarrassment.

Nah, it's not their fault.  I'm sure most adults don't know either.  Is it really not extremely common knowledge all over the world?

The cynic in me thinks that it would be best for Koreans to think that language lines up with country, with the exception of English.

This puts all languages at the same level. I think it would be quite shocking if it was shown in what rank Korean is spoken vs other languages.
Ko fills half his luggage with instant noodles for his international business travels, a lesson he learned after assuming on his first trip that three packages would suffice for six days. “Man, was I wrong. Since then, I always make sure I pack enough.”
