Getting permission from your school to get another job?
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:59:55 am »
Please give me advice on what I should do to persuade my principal to give me permission to work at a summer camp during my summer vacation. I've asked him for permission and he straight out refuses because I refused to work 3 hours for free every week. We are in horrible terms, what should I do to get his permission? Should i just fake a letter to immigration stating that he's given me permission to do so? I really need this camp job! Please help, thanks in advance!

Can you please clarify? Are you trying to get another job during your paid vacation or are you trying to take unpaid leave to work the summer camp?

It's during my paid vacation.  I'm not taking any special leave from school.  This is coming straight out of my vacation time.

Are you with Epik? I'm sorry to say this, but your school will probably not allow this. We are not allowed to do any other work while working for Epik. If the camp is not for another school, you wll not be able to do it. They will not allow you to be paid twice. Sorry.

I'm with Gepik, and I believe it has to do with immigration laws and not our contract laws...correct me if i'm wrong.

Yes, I think they both are involved in it. Bottom line, you are allowed to help out at another school's camp, but not allowed to get paid. My friend was asked to help out at my school's camp last year and my school paid him, but his school took 3 days of pay from his salary because he was already getting paid for those days.

May I ask why it is so urgent that you have to work at this camp?

It's a private summer camp. But i'm a public school teacher.  Additionally, I want to work to save up money for grad school :(

I'm sorry, but they will not allow that. The school can get into big trouble. I'm not sure if it is the same with Gepik, but with Epik there are camps that the POE organizes during the holiday. We have a choice to go work at these camps or not. If we don't want to, we can stay at school, but if we go to the camps and give our lesson plans, we get paid extra for it. We get paid by our schools and the POE for the camp. Maybe email your POE and ask if they have any of these camps? I'm sure they will be able to help you. You can also ask your school for some overtime working maybe? Extra classes during the holidays or even on weekends. Good luck! I'm sorry that your school is being like this, but I'm sure they are just trying to cover their own asses. They could get into big trouble if they allow you to do this. Rather ask your POE about official camps during the holiday. They will definitely need a teacher somewhere!

Harsh. My school sent me to Cheonan to do a 6 day Winter camp during my desk warming time and I essentially got double pay - regular pay plus pay from the other school. I'm at a public high school in a small town so they put me up in a love motel for the week. Good times.

I worked at a winter camp with permission from my principal. Unfortunately you can't just "fake" a letter. Doesn't work like that. There's a lot of documents that need to be processed.

I am pretty sure that a public school would never let you do that. Sometimes, we get short term jobs where we go to another school or do another event. Usually, those are paid. I had one once, but it was only two weeks long.

I think, it is best that you drop it or quit your job or do illegal work. I would recommend dropping it, as it is the best way to stay employeed. Legally, if you are a public school teacher, you aren't allowed to work elsewhere, unless it is another public school/public administration deal.

Good luck to what you choose, but if you need money that bad, I have no idea why you came to Korea.
