Geeky Tips for getting Music?
« on: October 30, 2010, 12:27:46 pm »
Hi guys!
This is probably VERY off topic, but Ive searched every single website google throws at me, I can't find anything!
I came over to Korea 3 weeks ago with a brand new laptop with nothing on it. Now I want to invest in an iPod to make those long subway rides a bit shorter. The problem is I don't have any music on my laptop for this new iPod!

I want to download whole albums if possible, but there are so many options for P2P applications and what not and most only allow single file downloading as far as I can tell. Does anyone know of a good site or application where I can download albums of music easily? I also realize that the iStore is an option, however I do not have a bank account (or a phone) yet so I can't apply for an iStore account at all!

A bit of a geeky topic, I know! But back in SA I would have just copid someone else's iPod and had millions of songs! I don't have that luxury here, so now I'm opting for starting my own music collection...

Thanx a mil in advance for your help guys! Happy weekend! xxx

I'm not too sure, but I think your laptop should still be connected to your home country... for instance, my iTunes it still the American iTunes.

If you don't have any music on your computer, you'll probably have to buy some new tunes, which is a bust. But I suppose you gotta do what you gotta do. I plan on buying a new laptop soon and I'll probably have to do the same.

Anyway, try iTunes on your new laptop, it should work--although I haven't tried buying music on there yet.

You could try http://www.jamendo.com. It's free and legal.

Fast, mostly reliable (you may have to search a bit for some obscure stuff) and in Korea completely safe...

Can you elaborate on the legality of sharing copyrighted materials in S. Korea? I personally do not know (and planned to look into) the laws in Korea, but I would imagine it is still illegal. What, then, would make it "completely safe"?

Do note that record companies HAVE gone after people not living in America, so any clarification on why S. Korea is safe would be great, thanks!

Personally, I would steer clear of directly promoting the use of any questionable knowingly illegal downloading methods on these forums.  While I'm pretty indifferent towards the use of such sites as thepiratebay.org or such programs as uTorrent, it should perhaps be pointed out to some of the newer people in SK that controversies have arisen from the illegal and/or perceived illegal use of the Internets here.  I've also heard of US companies going after people abroad.  I know this site is supposed to be 'safe' but, really, what is safe on the Net these days??

That said, savevid.com is a great website that you can use to legally download videos from various websites.  It works great with YouTube allowing you to choose from several different file formats, some already Ipod ready.  It's been a big help for me at school, too.  If the internet isn't working in your classroom, or if it's just really slow, and you wanted access to some video on the web then you could use savevid.com to download the video on another computer (with internet of course!) and save it to a USB.

Also, if you're tech savvy enough it's fairly simple to strip the audio from those videos and convert them to another format if necessary..

I for one had an experience with the MPAA but I was living in Japan at the time.

Another one that is good to try is mnet.com.  You may be able to get a reduced price subscription through your phone carrier.  For example: I have LG Telecome and OZ but through them I have a deal to get 40 downloads and live streaming anytime on my computer for 7,000원. You can also get a pretty decent deal directly on mnet.  They do have quite a selection of foreign songs as well as of course the Korean songs.  Good luck.

try " soulseek " if you like eclectic stuff....its amazing and been going strong with electronic, indie and underground, avant garde stuff for years now. Some Koreans use it too actually! It can take time to get used to but you can chat with other users as well and its a great expereince for a music fanatic.

I would also endorse soulseek, but I prefer the Grease Monkey plugin Yousable Tube to any of the video downloading sites out there: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/13333 It strips the ads, resizes the video, and allows you to download directly from google servers in multiple resolutions and formats. You need the Grease Monkey plugin for Firefox to use it.
