Back to School Ideas...
« on: December 31, 2008, 12:06:23 pm »
Does anyone have any? My brain is depleted.

My kids return this Friday after a week long holiday break. It's supplementary class time in high school now, meaning extra classes in between the real semesters. And I won't have a co-teacher. I have a feeling if I don't come up with something really fun and engaging they won't do a thing since it's not real class time. I hate just babysitting though, I would love to do something interesting and engaging. But I'm drawing a blank :S

I am a little out of the loop, since I am not really teaching at the moment, however there's a big lesson plan master list HERE.  It's maintained by Brian, and he's been doing a rather good job at categorizing the material.

Damn, sucks that you have to try and teach something when they're in vacation mode.  Don't even get me started on that.

The last two weeks of the semester were kind of throw-away classes where I could experiment with different plans off here.  The one that worked the best was the "types of music" one.  You'll need a TV with sound and access to youtube, and before you get into class you'll have to cue up the videos.  The students liked seeing and hearing the different genres of music; the second time I did it Justin Timberlake and the "pop" genre was far and away the most popular.  (Many students know him b/c a Korean singer has done a cover of "Sexy Back.")

Here's the lesson: http://waygook.org/index.php?topic=610.0

I also did the flag lesson, but that took some effort and the students didn't really care about drawing their own flags.

I am currently doing this Action Alphabet Vocabulary, wherein i give about 15 action verbs for overnight study, then the following sesion we get into a game of "acting out." Try it, it's a lot of fun.
from my own dizzying thoughts come something i never expected.
