Finish the Sentence Apples to Apples
« on: October 02, 2013, 01:36:31 PM »
I was recently introduced to Cards Against Humanity and decided to make something similar for my classes (but school appropriate!!) so I made these cards.

I teach in a (girls) high school but they have worked with all range of abilities from 3rd graders to VERY low ability vocational classes and they have all enjoyed it.

I hope you find them useful!   :azn:

Little heads up to ya echorjl.

I don't think those docs uploaded how you wanted them to.

Every page runs off screen but doesn't go into the next page. I tried with landscape orientation and that didn't help.

any chance you can upload each page as a jpg for people to saveas onto their comp?

I have just opened up both those docs and printed them out. In my case they printed out perfectly, cheers for that!

These look great! I think this could be great for my really low level middle school.

I hope I can get these to print out in border to border printing... did you put a backing on the cards and laminate them? Or did you just print them as they are?

Thanks for your great work.

The documents open up blank in Open Office, and don't open at all in microsoft word (due to being in docx). Any advice, OP? seems others had no trouble opening them up. :(

Here's the cards in PDF form, I hope this is better?

I didn't laminate them but I stuck the sentence cards onto newspaper and then cut them out.

This is awesome - thanks for the pdf files! I have some intermediate and high level kids who've played the game before and asked if we could do it in after school, so this is perfect!

Awesome job! Fun enough to keep my higher levels interested and simple enough for my lower levels to play along.

Could easily customize all this for various sets of vocabulary and phrases.
Two thumbs up

I've never played this. What are the rules?

The rules are pretty straightforward: You play in rounds, with the "judge" being a different student every round. The judge selects a "prompt" (the card with the sentence), and the other students select from their hand of cards (the traditional rules are that everyone should have 8 cards in their hand at a time, I think), making a funny or weird sentence -- whatever they think is the best fit. When the other students have laid their cards face-down on the table, the judge picks the one card he or she thinks is the best. The student whose card was chosen wins the round. The goal is the collect the most prompt cards.

Obviously, I'm sure it would be a good idea to tailor the rules to your age and ability level. It's a great game, though!

Love this! I really like your selection of nouns. Some sets of ESL Apples to Apples are a little too boring... but my girls love the "poo" and "bra" cards... I tested it with some 1st grade middle school girls (really low level) and it was SO great! We finished all the cards and were like, "Again!" The. Best. I'm printing 6 sets (plus expansion pack) and laminating them!

I've used these cards for both middle and high school. I'll vouch for this activity big time.

My middle school class is the most apathetic bunch of kids ever - they won't even watch Hollywood movies etc. But loads of them were excited about this. And the high schoolers are loving it.

As for the amount of cards required: One complete set (ie cards plus expansion) is about right for a group of kids for a long game (groups of around 8 kids work well). So for a class of 15, if you print both sets twice, you should be fine.

I loved what you did echorjl!  This is perfect for middle schoolers of all levels.

I took your original idea and redesigned it a bit, combining the two sets and adding another sheet of Sentence cards.  A lot of new images and some new nouns to choose from.  I also added green and red backgrounds to the cards, so that it's a little easier to keep the Sentence cards separate from the Noun cards, and it more closely matches the actual game now.  There are now 48 green Sentence cards and 176 red Noun cards (some of my classes are big, nearly 40 students).  With final exams closing in and the students getting restless, this will really help out a lot!  I'm planning on laminating them for use with multiple classes/grades...the school's going to love me going through that many lamination sheets!

I've also included a short PPT, describing the rules of the game.  I redesigned this from the original by jazzychica (http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,16813.msg133959.html#msg133959).

Two of the green Sentence cards have personal or Gwangju-specific references.  You will have to change them to fit yourself/your location.

PJBlake, looks good! The printers at my school don't do colour, so I didn't even think about that!

I just used this with my middle school 3rd graders, and it went great! Explaining the rules was the hardest part, but once they got the hang of it they really seemed to be having fun- and I had fun hearing their sentences. "My girlfriend is a banana" is the only one I remember, unfortunately.

The best part, though, is that this gets the more confident students helping the weaker students. Thanks for posting!

Thanks so much for this!

Silly question (as I'm not very good with games)  :-[, my classes have 34 students in them. How many sets of these would I need if I make them play in 6 teams? (4 groups of 6 students and 2 groups of 5 students)/
