Korea: Rural Schools Looking for Summer Volunteers
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:11:11 am »

In hopes to increase the number of foreign English teachers and quality of English education, the Korean government has begun accepting foreign residence to volunteer at local schools this summer.  The Korean school board this year has been attempting to increase the foreign teacher population by starting programs such as TaLK    The Korean education officials are targeting US military stationed in Korea, multi-national families, and expatriate communities for the summer volunteer program.  Applicants must not be illegally in Korea and not on a visitor visa.  The Korea Times reports:

It is hoped that members of the families of U.S. soldiers and foreign diplomats will participate in the program, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said Wednesday.

``The free programs will help students in rural areas and from the lower-income brackets learn English,'' Lee Young-chan, deputy of the English education policy team at the ministry, said. ``It will give them more opportunities to meet native English speakers.'' - Korea Times

The program is to last only a short period of time (3-4 weeks in summer) and expected to benefit nearly 50 000 students.  No previous educational experience nor teaching experience is required.  Those interested in the volunteer program should contact local education officials (your local public school and Public School board).
