High School - St. Patrick's Day

This is my high school'ed version of Lana's St. Patrick's Day lesson.

St. Patrick's Day
  • Native Speaker gives students a pop quiz on St. Patrick's Day. 5 minutes.
  • Native Speaker goes over the pop quiz.  5 minutes.
  • Native Speaker gives demonstration of St. Patrick's Day in Korea. 10 minutes.
  • Native Speaker gives demonstration of St. Patrick's Day in Chicago. 5 minutes.
  • Native Speaker introduces St. Patrick's Day and Irish Vocabulary.  10 minutes.
  • Students perform Hidden Object worksheet.  5 minutes.
  • Students perform Word Search worksheet.  5 minutes.
  • Students perform Puzzle worksheet.  5 minutes.

Notes:
  • I put my students into six teams and generated six separate word searches to avoid any cheating.
  • The Hidden Object Puzzle is super easy for the high school kids but the word search and puzzle have a medium difficulty; in all classes at least two teams managed to make it all the way through.
  • For the last part of the puzzle I have the kids come up to the board and write a list of leprechauns ordered from tallest to shortest.
  • The vocabulary introduction can be a bit dry for the slow classes.  There are plenty of online videos out there to spice it up.

I used the photos from the Irish Association of Korea (yes they do have St. Patrick's Day here) and I used these online videos of dyeing the Chicago River:[noembed][/noembed]
The word search was generated via A to Z Teacher's Stuff where you could generate a four leaf clover word search.  And the Hidden Object picture was stolen from Highlight Kids.

As St Paddy's is soon approaching I thought this might be a fun lesson to use. If I've made any mistakes just let me know.
There's an information ppt, a bomb game, a word search and a listening gap fill exercise. The audio can be found on the hyperlink slide 10 if the information ppt.

Excellent, I will definitely use this, A bit of Irish Culture is what these Koreans need, There is so much similarities between the two countries when you start to look at it, I will attach my introductory lesson talking about me and Ireland, Any apologies for the Jedward thing!!!

Yeah I know. This amazed me last year when I started reading into Korean history. Both of us have made the same mistakes, time and time again down the years.

I was asked to write an article about Ireland for my (mid-high level academic) high school newspaper last month, and I decided to compare Irish and Korean history. Dunno if it's much use, but if you wanted to throw together a PPT comparing the two countries there might be some useful info in it:

I've done a PPT on Ireland it's only basic stuff. It's on the same ppt as the UK 1 just for geographical reasons.

Very interesting article, Luke. I wish my students levels weren't so all over the map. I'd love to do an activity with it with my students but I'm fairly sure half of them would end up lost. Great reading though!

Love the hurling clip. Really good beginners guide for the Koreans, I've always had a hard time trying to explain what's going on exactly.

I used this St. Patricks day crossword puzzle. Korean students really love working in groups trying to solve a problem. I gave out candy to the group that finished first.
