Korea world's largest condom makers

I am not sure putting animals on condoms sends the right message.  :P

Plus, if only 20 percent of Koreans use condoms, why is AIDS so low in Korea with all of its prostitution?

In a country where sex is still a taboo word, it would not be easy to sell condoms. But, here is a CEO who struggles not only to promote his company’s sales but also raise public awareness of so-called safe sex.

UNIDUS President Kim Sung-hoon, who took office as the chief of his company in June last year at the age of 39, stressed in an interview with The Korea Times that condoms are the best way to protect oneself from disease as well as unwanted pregnancy.

Listed on the tech-heavy KOSDAQ, UNIDUS has recently emerged as the world’s No. 1 condom maker in terms of sales and production, accounting for more than 65 percent of the domestic market and over 30 percent of the global market.

Global Market Leader

UNIDUS, which was launched under the name Seohung Industrial Co. in 1973, has devoted itself to manufacturing quality latex material products such as condoms, surgical gloves and latex finger cots for the past 35 years.

In April 2000, it changed the company name to UNIDUS ― from the similar phonetics of the catchword ``You Need Us.’’ In 2001, the company was listed on the Kosdaq market.

UNIDUS has then emerged as the world’s largest manufacturer since 2005 when it built a new factory in China in addition to its main plant at home to produce 1.15 billion condoms a year.

``We now export our products to more than 80 countries through international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Funds for Population Activities (UNFPA),’’ Kim said. ``Even North Koreans are using UNIDUS now.’’

He added that his firm, which makes some 80 percent of its profits from overseas sales, now accounts for about 30 percent of international bids for orders made by international organizations.

Currently, the global demand for condoms numbers about 8 billion units worth 1.1 trillion won ($1.2 billion) annually. Given that South Korea accounts for less than 1 percent of the global market, the international competitiveness of UNIDUS is quite amazing.

Kim, who has worked for the company since 1995, says the secret to success lies in the firm’s continuous efforts to improve the quality of its products through development of key technologies.

He said that his company has set a high standard for its products, twice higher than the international standard, which requires every condom to bear the pressure of 18 liters of air injected into the product.

``Unlike other goods, the recall system is useless for condoms ― if defective they could produce irreversible results,’’ he said. ``That’s why we inspect all products.’’

UNIDUS is also stepping up efforts to develop new products. Following the ``Long Love,’’ a best-selling brand, the firm is also set to release a new series of products with images of animals on boxes, designed by famous pop artist Kunstler Andora, next January.

Efforts to Change Culture

Kim, who once worked for a paper-manufacturing company, has faced large obstacles while working for the condom company for over 10 years ― mostly from the prejudice of the people and the culture in society.

``In this conservative society where Confucian values still linger, the rate of the condom usage is standing at around 20 percent, the lowest among all member states of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development),’’ he said.

Next year, Kim said, UNIDUS plans to focus on improving its brand image not only among experts and representatives from international bodies and foreign countries but also consumers at home and abroad.

He added that the company would also have to cut production costs by active research and development (R&D) activities in the face of the won’s rise and, from a longer-term perspective, it would stage a campaign to ensure the sound culture of sex at home.

``Like our company name UNIDUS, or `You Need Us,’ I would like to develop my firm into one that our customers around the world need,’’ he said. ``I hope the domestic consumers could one day tell the vendor `UNIDUS, please!’ without hesitation or shyness.’’

With only 20% of people using condons it's strange that AIDS rates are higher.  Prostitution is definitely a problem here, you can't walk down the street without seeing hooker cards on the ground, Anmas (Scrub and Tugs) or shady Barber shops. Heck, I'm nervous to go get a massage because I'm worried the place might be a brothel.
(When I lived in Pusan, there was a red light district not far from my apartment and next to the hooker shops was a police station.  I thought it was funny.)

From what I've been reading in Newspapers it seems that men going to other countries and using prostitutes is also a big problem.  But according to the few stats I can find, available on the matter, Korea is ranked very low in AIDS pr evelance rates.

Here is a UN world map listing AIDS rates.  Korea is at lowest possible level.
 http://data.unaids.org/pub/GlobalReport/2006/2006GR-PrevalenceMap_en.pdf

Also on Wikipedia I found some info listing AIDS rates- Korea was ranked 120th.  Sorry can't find the link now. I found it really difficult to find info on AIDS rates in Korea.

I know drug use is very low in Korea, that helps to keep rates low.  But has anybody found any information supporting why this is so?  I'm curious.

Or can Korea expect an epidemic, or at least a scare of one,  like some other Asian countries have gone through in the past?

Look at the map from Wikipedia, and look at the other nations in South Korea's bracket.  With the exception of Japan, you don't have any countries with particularly strong economies.  Egypt and Saudi Arabia have pockets of wealth, but places like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Romania struggle with povery and other social issues (to say the least).  The nations in Africa and SE Asia that are notorious for AIDS are also poor, but I think the difference is that people are looking for AIDS there.

About two Koreans contract HIV each day.  Two per day is way too high for a developed country in the 21st century.  I'm not sure what the rate is in the US---probably too damned high as well.

According to the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention, around 2.1 persons are newly diagnosed with the disease every day, with the number of confirmed cases standing at 4,956, meaning there are likely to be 5,000 by the end of 2007.

Still, the patients feel greatly discriminated against. According to Seoul National University's Graduate School of Public Health in 2005, four out of every 10 citizens think patients should be isolated from others.

Prof. Oh Myoung-don of the university's hospital said that with the right drugs, AIDS patients can be helped similarly to those suffering from cancer or cardiac problems. ``Its usually those who do not know they have the condition, or who do not treat themselves effectively that have a weaker immune system and suffer the most,'' he said, stressing the need for correct diagnosis and management.

The group said they will request the government to provide correct information and put a more friendly face on campaigns promoting AIDS testing rather than using scary images that drive people away from sufferers.

Thanks. 5000 AIDS victims is an extremely low number, but 2 new patients a day is high. I suspect the number is much higher. If a patient dies from an complications from AIDS, perhaps the relatives want the illness, but not AIDS, to be listed on his death certificate. My son died from TB sounds better than my son died from AIDS.
Also, perhaps people just don't get tested. So the carriers of HIV are a lot higher, just like most people who have HIV are unaware they have the illness. The 20% figure is misleading too. We don't know what the question was that was asked. If Koreans were asked if they use condoms with new partners or hoes, the number must be much higher.
Lastly, the pretty, young, high class hoes in brothels don't have sex with waygookins, since they are afraid of catching AIDS, because every white male is a rapid, steaming cauldron breading new strains of illness, like SARS, Mad Cow, the Plague, Small Pox and/or Avian Flu. There are signs forbiding waygookins from entering those places in Seoul, anyway.

Kimchi prevents aids.

Actually, I think Korea has a low level of reported cases because of relative isolation over the years.  But I do agree, with a 20% level of condom use, they're in for troubles (no matter how many HIV tests they give future foreigners entering the country).

Also, it's not only high-class hookers who'll refuse foreign men.  I took a walk down the Pink Light district in Seoul (out of curiousity, I swear :P ...but really, you should all go - it really speaks for the culture KOreans don't want to talk about) and I was shocked to receive more than one "No Americans!" taunt-shout at me...and I wasn't even looking at the girl who yelled it!  (Darn, and I was hoping to spread my AIDS.  I think everyone should have AIDS!  Watch the fat just melt away!  You'll be Jared in no time!)
