High School - Inventions and Gadgets

Here is a lesson on Gadgets that I did with Grade 1 High School students. The listening part was a bit hard sometimes, but they stayed with it those little angels did.

They all know what gadget means for the most part, because they all know about the Inspector Gadget movie. Though they might confuse the meaning of "gadget" with "inspector."

It starts with a powerpoint explanation of gadgets. Then goes into a listening activity from    http://www.elllo.org/english/Mixers/T084-Gadget.htm     with a fill in the blanks worksheet and quiz. (I had to read Shalini over again myself because she talks so fast.)

Go over the answers and meanings, and do the quiz.
A review and the last two slides can be made into part 2 for the next period if you want.

Enjoy!

I do a short overview of some inventions and then challenge the STs to make up their own in groups.
STs will then volunteer (or be called on) to present their inventions.

Wallace and Gromit also make an appearance (of course!).
(I plan to play one or two videos before the group work but added more in case everything ends early.)

If you guys have any suggestions/improvements, let me know; I start this lesson plan on the 10th. (:

A couple of things to think about:
1) Time - it will take them a long time to invent something, at least 20 minutes, at least my students did!
2) Are you going to give them an example of what's expected (a home shopping video for example)
3) What are the other students going to do while one group is presenting (some kind of peer evaluation of the groups inventions perhaps)
4) Maybe consider doing it over 2 classes instead of one? Will the students do a diagram of the invention?

I'm sorry I didn't have time to download the ppt before going home so you may have answered some of these in there. I attached my lesson plan for this lesson below.

Lesson and worksheet attached to get your students thinking, writing and speaking in English about creative inventions that can make their everyday lives easier - you're going to get a lot of hilarious and interesting ideas from this one if you bring lots of energy to each class!
