American dies at Incheon Airport because . . .
« on: October 09, 2007, 02:15:54 pm »
security blocked the EMTs.

From the Naver story, via Marmot's Hole:

Quote
Service staff at Incheon International Airport yesterday essentially killed a 48-year-old American man who’d collapsed in the airport’s baggage terminal when they prevented emergency rescue personnel dispatched from the airport fire station from entering the arrival concourse.
A witness said emergency personnel tried to enter the arrival concourse to assist the man, who’d stopped breathing, but were blocked by staff who told them they could not. A scuffle ensued for over five minutes, after which emergency staff entered through another way. Unfortunately, by the time they reached the American, he was already dead.
Airport service staff, meanwhile, blamed the rescue personnel for not properly explaining the situation at hand. The airport itself also blamed the rescue personnel.

* Marmot's Hole post
* Chosun Daily story, the only one I've seen so far in English.

According to the Chosun Ilbo the guy was Turkish, and they list his name.  In the Naver article they said he's American.  Either way, a pretty ridiculously tragic situation.

That is messed up. It makes me afraid to get sick in Korea. The emergency service from one part of the airport  didn't have authority to enter another part of the airport? What nonsense. What's the point of having an emergency crew? I hope the family of the dead man sue for big won.

I think the fact that the Korean version calls him "American", even though he was obviously Turkish makes a BIG statement about Koreans and their mentality.  Foreign?  You must be American.

And this is such a classically extreme example of their "rules-are-rules" mentality...which really only applies to us foreigners.  Koreans constantly bend the rules for their own needs, but as soon as we require said flexability, they can't...because rules are rules.

I agree with Samuel...I hope that guy gets some serious justice.  Frankly, he's dead - sueing would get nothing.  I think someone should be jailed for that.  They DID cause the man's death.
